Fourth Gen iPod on Apple Store

Fourth Gen iPod on Apple Store 07/19/2004 09:56 AM

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/beautyshot_ipod_0704.jpg" alt="beautyshot_ipod_0704.jpg image" width="131" height="220" border="0" align="right" vspace="5" hspace="15"/>So Apple has put up the new iPod product page on the Apple Store, so if you had any lingering last doubt that the Newsweek leak was legitimate it can now be put to rest. As is my usual response to an Apple product launch, I was initially underwhelmed, but have started to warm to some of the ancillary changes (the primary change being the new iPod mini-like Click Wheel), like the one-click Shuffle Songs menu option and the extended battery life. And while that's well and good, since I don't plan on upgrading for the time being (my iPod is still in the shop, but will come back shiny and new, god willing), what I really want to know is if we'll be seeing these changes to the 3rd generation iPods and iPod mini through a firmware update. (Thanks, everybody!)

NEC announces
three-generation-compatible HD DVD drive
12/22/2004 01:27 AM
A new prototype HD DVD drive capable of playing back HD DVDs, DVDs, and CDs with a single optical head has been announced by NEC Corporation today. NEC Corporation said the new drive enables the creation of the world's first half height size drive suitable for desktop computer installation. It plans on exhibiting the new prototype drive at the 2005 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from January 6th to 9th, 2005. NEC said the main features of this prototype drive are its three-wavelength-compatible optical head, its three-generation-compatible system LSI, its half height size capable of installation in desktop PCs, and its stable operation on the compatible drive. NEC and Toshiba have proposed the "HD DVD" format, which employs blue LDs with shorter than conventional wavelength as its light source to enable higher recording density. NEC said in order to realize compatibility with current discs, such as CDs and DVDs, a large number of parts are required resulting in a large-sized drive and that this has been one of the major challenges to overcome.

My IBM Thinkpad has a feature where it tries to recognize if the laptop is falling, and if it is, to protect the hard drive to (hopefully) prevent damage. It appears tha Apple has been working on a similar technology for the more-likely-to-be-dropped iPod. Apple apparently filed for a patent on the technology in June 2003. It's unclear from the article if IBM filed for a similar patent, but if they had it's likely they did so earlier, because the Thinkpads started including the feature in October of 2003.
