Neonode N1 Details: Pint-Sized
Powerhouse Pared
07/19/2004 08:19 AM

neonode_frontside.jpg imageNeonode has updated their (annoying, Flash) product page with some real live information about the shipping version of the Neonode N1 GSM phone, including information about the features that are there by default, and those that will be included via free firmware updates in the future. In all, it looks to have the majority of the major features most modern day phones have, with a few glaring admissions, like no GPRS (GSM internet connectivity, basically) and no email, and a complete lack of Bluetooth (they won't be adding that in with a software update, I'm pretty sure.) It's a little disappointing, considering how much they had hyped up the phone, but at least they're trying to get a version out the door. That's better that vapor, if barely.

But still, do any of our Euro readers still care about the N1 these days, or did Neonode miss the boat? (Thanks, Eric!)

hitachi_mx1.jpg imageHitachi has announced a new Japanese PDA called the FLORA-ie MX1, a 400MHz Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 2003SE. The most stand-out feature of the MX1 is definitely the Zaurus-like slide-out keyboard which is certain to make it lusted after by many Western Pocket PC fans, who have been privy to integrated keyboards before, but nothing quite the same. As a big fan of the Zaurus form factor (and less so the Linux environment it runs) I'd say it's a pretty appealing design. I hope Hitachi considers bringing it to the US.

It's beefy, too, with a 4-inch VGA screen, built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and SD and CF slots—everything a Windows pocket-sagger should be.

From A Second Tier Chinese Portal Site
To An Enterprise Software Powerhouse?
05/04/2004 03:56 AM
Business Week is running an article looking at the changing strategies of chinadotcom. The company, which had always been a second tier portal site in China (not as popular as Sina, Netease or Sohu), is now trying to completely reinvent itself. They're selling off that going nowhere portal business, and are desperately trying to become an enterprise software player in the Chinese market. To do so, they've been using some of the cash they've been hoarding (from a boom-time IPO on the NASDAQ) to buy up struggling western enterprise software makers like Pivotal and Ross Systems. While the article seems to indicate this is a good strategy, they don't make it clear why. Going from a second tier portal to a consolidation play of widely distributed, previously failed, out-of-date enterprise software products seems like a shift sideways, rather than up.

03/14/2005 06:10 PM
ATP Electronics Inc., a leading manufacturer of digital flash media products, today announced that it is in mass production of high capacity dual voltage RS-MMC (DV RS-MMC). The dual voltage (DV) feature allows for compatibility with devices running on the conventional 3.0V as well as with the dual voltage 3.0/1.8V devices. The low voltage feature translates to much lower power consumption, meaning longer battery life for both today and tomorrow’s mobile digital devices. Card capacities of 128MB and 256MB are available immediately, with 512MB available in March. [PRWEB Feb 20, 2005]

Nokia joins with SD Card format

Nokia joins with SD Card format 09/14/2004 03:00 PM
The Inquirer is reporting that mobile manufacturer Nokia could be planning an imminent implementation of SD technology across its mobile phone range. Secure Digital (SD) technology is a data storage technology, allowing easy storage and transfer of files. The Inq, rather smugly, writes:

"As predicted back at Computex (here), Nokia stood a good chance of being left out on a limb by its insistence on using only MMC cards. As Timo Poikolainen, vp for technology marketing with Nokia was forced to admit, "They [SD cards] enable the smooth exchange of digital content among the wide range of SD-enabled devices on the market." Tellingly he also revealed that, "There is also increasing customer demand for SD Card technology in mobile devices."".

No word on what, or which, devices will gain SD technology. Nokia currently use MMC card technology on some products, an alternative flash memory type that doesn't have the wide-spread adoption enjoyed by SD. With greater uptake of camera phones and phones with mp3 players built in, the adoption of SD will undoubtedly be well received by end users. The Inq is also reporting that the flash memory market will be worth $15.9 billion in 2008.

"Jesus?" he murmured, "Jesus -- of Nazareth?..." Pontius Pilate, prefect of Judea, is the only historical figure named in the Nicene Creed -- Coptic saint or eternal ly damned, his role in the greatest story ever told has been debated by many of history's greatest minds: St Augustine, Dante Alighieri, Tintoretto , John Ru skin, Mikh ail Bulgakov, Monty Python. Unfortunately, there is very little historical evidence about him. His role in the death of a certai n charismatic Galilean healer and apocalyptic preacher is still being debated today by theologians and historians alike. He is also, of course, the main character of The Procurator of Judea, the classic short story (complete text in main link) by A natole Fra nce. (France's magnificent story has lately been tragically neglected by publishers, even if the author was one of his era's most acclaimed writers in the world -- he won the Nobel Prize in 1921 over Shaw, Yeats, Joyce, Thomas Hardy, D.H. Lawrence, and Proust, and when he died in 1924, hundreds of thousands of people followed his funeral procession through Paris). These last 2,000 years of fascination with Pilatus can be explained, some argue... (more inside, for those unwilling to wash their hands of this post)

09/09/2004 09:00 AM

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

The GPS unit uses the same battery and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing charge to go along with it.

The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't scheduled until Q1 2005.
