eWeek: Sun to promote LAMP

eWeek: Sun to promote LAMP 08/16/2002 05:51 AM

Schwartz said that at the edge of the Web, Sun will promote a LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) solution to developers. LAMP, a generic open-source solution, is Sun's Linux-based solution available on its newly released LX50 Intel-based machines running Linux or Solaris. Schwartz referred to Sun's version as Sun LAMP. Apache is an open-source Web server, MySQL is an open-source database and PHP is an open-source language for creating middle-tier HTML applications.

"Our competition is Windows, but it will increasingly suffer from the economic model Linux will promote," Schwartz said.

While Sun will continue to drive large deployments to the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) infrastructure, the company will promote LAMP for less complex applications.

JSP 2.0 has three major changes, all of which make the language significantly easier to use for non-Java programmers... JSP 2.0 supports a new expression and variable manipulation syntax based on both ECMAScript and XPath. This expression language provides built-in support for nested data structures and collections of objects, automatic type conversion, and default values for uninitialized variables.

DIY CD Lamp 06/06/2005 12:09 AM

cd_lamp_top_sm.jpgA man who thought that sunlight looks beautiful as it refracts through the side of a CD-ROM shouldn't be trusted with power tools, but I guess they're more lax about that up in Canada. Jim Watters, a former QA tester, had about 70 CDs and decided to make a lamp in order to recreate that warm, plastic glow. The resulting DIY project is a wonderful fire hazard made of a tube light and some plywood. (Thanks, Luke)

Being a diehard MovableType user we will be upgrading this site tonight to MovableType version 3.14. The stop gap measures put into place by parent company Six Apart looks like a good first step towards fixing the problem that many of us have had to deal with.

I am sure my hosting provider will be happy about the upgrade let's just hope they keep their focus and get a real fix into place so we don't have to force users into registering with their third party authentication service just to leave comments on this web sites.

A hardware designer for Microsoft reveals that Microsoft plans to someday include bigger drives in their Portable Media Center devices (which are a different ball of wax altogether than the generic Portable Media Player terminology the author keeps using), reaching 125GB by 2007. How will Microsoft - who doesn't make hard drives - achieve this amazing feat?

Microsoft's software engineers are already working to increase the size of the PMP drives.

Gravity Lamp

Gravity Lamp 09/22/2004 08:39 AM

gravity_lamp.jpg imageThis "Gravity" lamp from one of our favorite design houses Front is a concept design that detects when you enter and exit a room, perking up straight and shining brightly upon your arrival, and slowly drooping down to slumber when after you leave. This is appealing not only because it gives the lamp a sense of personality - albeit a sycophantic one centered around its need for its master's approval - but because it takes us one step closer to the real future we all crave, where each night we retire to our own personal version of Pee Wee's Playhouse.

At $225, though, it's almost cheap enough to just get and justify as a heirloom or something. Here's your inheritance, kids, and it glows!

Oh, and if you are worried about getting one just because the bulbs might burn out, apparently the 25-watt tubular bulbs can be gotten almost anywhere, even Home Depot. And of course, you can't forget the finishing touch - the control knob is a chromed replacement for a Fender Telecaster.

eWeek Pulls Socket Puppet from Lobbying

eWeek connects NMRC to Issue Dynamics, a telecom lobbying firm: Wayne Rash reports at the end of a story about Philadelphia's upcoming municipal wireless announcement the following blockbuster about the ties between the New Millennium Research Council, co-issuers of today's report "Not In The Public Interest - The Myth of Municipal Wi-Fi Networks." (I've written extensively about this report and its precursors over the last few days.) Rash writes: While preparing this story, eWEEK.com learned that the NMRC is actually owned and sponsored by Washington lobbying firm Issue Dynamics Inc., whose clients include most of the major telecommunications companies in the United States. Those companies have been active in opposing municipal wireless and broadband efforts. The company claimed that its reports were nevertheless completely independent. I've been saying these folks were sock puppets for days and criticizing the lack of transparency about funding among several organizations involved in creating this report, while still listening to the message. (I had some positive things to say about parts of the report earlier today.) This should be a major embarrassment to Issue Dynamics's clients who are now starkly revealed as the puppeteers. More prosaically, Rash describes the public/private partnership that Philadelphia expects to use, which is in contrast to the kinds of entirely municipal efforts decried in the NMRC's report. Tropos may have the lead as it was involved in a four-square-mile test. And note throughout the article that Philly's CIO Dianah Neff is talking about broadband wireless, not "Wi-Fi," as the report continually conflates. The ever-insightful Carol Ellison also weighed in about the NMRC report. She summarizes the phone conference about the release of the report today as, "The rollout of municipally held Wi-Fi networks will likely have a detrimental effect on city budgets and on competition." Ellison castigates the press event and the report, noting, "But while the session promised to fill the gap on the dearth of in-depth analysis on the subject, it and the report that accompanied it offered many more sweeping statements about failed projects than information about why they failed." Ellison shreds the NMRC for its undisclosed connection to Issue Dynamics: "The NMRC made a point to say that none of the researchers who participated received any money from NMRC. But in case you're wondering who's paying the bills at IDI, take a look at its client list. If you don't want to read the whole...

Microsoft Looks to Extinguish LAMP

Microsoft Looks to Extinguish LAMP 06/17/2005 03:18 PM
Microsoft engineers have toiled for years to make the company's software industrial strength and worthy of large corporations' dollars.

Now the software giant faces a different challenge: fending off open-source alternatives that are good enough for most jobs. At Microsoft's TechEd customer conference last week, executives spelled out the company's lineup to combat these cut-rate incursions onto its turf.

In particular, the company is focused on improving its alternatives to the so-called LAMP stack, the combination of the Linux operating system, Apache Web server, MySQL database, and scripting languages PHP, Perl or Python. Microsoft's anti-LAMP strategy is to heap features into its low-end products and to build a comprehensive set of tools--spanning development to management--in the hopes of making Windows Server more attractive.

Sony May Support Native MP3 (What Took

Oh ho! Sony, who I had already pretty much counted out of the portable music game, has just stepped back up to the plate with the announcement (which makes for really boring baseball, really) that they will be supporting MP3 on their players, starting with flash players and going from there. That's the good news. The bad news is that their plans aren't official yet, so they could still drop the ball if they aren't careful. Oh, and there's nothing saying that the existing product line - on which millions of dollars worth of marketing and distribution have been slathered - will be able to be upgraded to support native MP3 playback.

Figure it out, Sony! And hurry!

Cory Doctorow: The AlphaSmart Neo is a full-sized keyboard with a little LCD screen on the top. It acts as a word-processor, letting you type into its 512k cache while it draws power from 3 AA batteries. When you get back to your Mac or PC, you just dump the text over USB or IR. The thing runs for 700 hours on a 3 AA batts and costs $250, and weighs about 2 lbs.

My only complaint about this thing is the storage: 512k? I know that's a whole novel and then some, but geez, flash-RAM is so cheap now -- why not just give it a SD slot and I could use an old 64MB card from my last camera? Link (via Engadget)

Update: Chris Taylor points out that AlphaSmart has a model that supports memory cards -- and it comes with WiFi and PalmOS.
