Asian firm releases IPOD Mini
03/19/2005 03:27 AMHot on the heels of last week’s iPod Shuffle clone released by a
Taiwanese firm, a new IPOD Mini has emerged on the market.
Chinese manufacturer Orient Expert Technology Co., Ltd. (OEM) says the
IPOD Mini has a 4GB 1 inch hard drive, USB2.0 hi-speed, supports MP3,
WMA, DRM WMA, ADPCM files and has the optional features of FM Tuner
and MP3 line-in encoding. It is 52.5 x 79.2 x 17.7mm and weighs 85g.
Last week at CeBIT, Luxpro of Taiwan displayed its Super Shuffle MP3.
According to an interview conducted by the Chinese-language Economic
Daily News (EDN), Luxpro said that although their product may look
like the iPod shuffle, it differs internally and includes an FM radio
and voice recorder. Luxpro’s Chairman Fu-Ching Wu told EDN that
patents do not cover appearance.

Cameras
07/22/2004 08:11 AM
Hoping to cash
in on the iPod mini craze (and you know, I've heard more stupid ideas
before), Kyocera is selling five new color-matched versions of the
four-megapixel Finecam SL400R cameras. Color-matched, that is, to the
iPod mini. And while I'm sure they'll be super hot (at least to those
fashion-forward iPod adopters), getting one into the States may not be
so easy -- the cameras will only be available in Apple's Ginza store
and the online Apple Store (but for Japan-shipping only? Unknown!)
(Thanks, Jon!)

Apple releases Mac OS X 10.3.7 Update
12/24/2004 12:46 PMApple has released Mac OS X 10.3.7 via the
Software Update utility. Key enhancements include improved AFP support
for saving documents with long file names, improved OpenGL technology
and updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers, improved FireWire device
compatibility, an updated Preview application, and improved
compatibility for third party applications. The 10.3.7 update is
recommended for all users of Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther." It also includes
all previous stand alone security updates.
Here is a bit of
wisdom for all you Mac users, never ever upgrade to a new version of
OSX until the Mac community has had time to see if it breaks any other
software or hardware on your Mac. A week will not make a difference to
you, but it will give Apple time to catch any bugs that might have
been missed.

Australia Looking To Outlaw Spyware
12/26/2003 01:45 PMOver in Australia, they've realized that as they try to slow down the
spam tide, the worst spam scammers have moved from spam on to spyware.
Thus, they're now
talking about outlawing spyware - at which point the
scammers will move on to something else. While I do think something
needs to be done about spyware, I wonder how they're going to define
spyware. Whenever politicians start outlawing technologies, there's a
big risk that they'll do such a bad job of defining the software, that
plenty of legitimate applications get banned as well. In the case of
spyware, I guess the focus should be on applications that are
installed without the computer owner's clear consent (which means not
sneaking approval into an end user license agreement either).
