CleanTV - Not just clean, Utah Clean! 02/10/2004 02:53 AM
CleanTV (currently in the early stages of construction) is th is guy's new web site. It will log instances of "offensive" material shown on broadcast television, enable offended TV viewers to send email directly to local station owners and management, and/or send emails to the station's local and national advertisers. What happens to advertisers who ignore the email campaign and continue to sponsor shows that CleanTV deems offensive? - "If an advertiser continues to support offensive advertising, they will be targeted for local and national boycott. On the local level, newspapers are notified of the boycott and CleanTV volunteers will demonstrate at the advertiser's place of business until the advertiser decides to rescind their support of offensive programming."

listen . . .

listen . . . 12/19/2004 03:48 PM

I wanted to share with WWdN readers this amazing thing I discovered via boingboing recently: Comfort Stand Records.

I'm listening to Swingin' Singles while I do this work . . . and I absolutely must share this record with you WWdN readers. It rules. Stand out artists include Mat h and Physics Club, Forty-One , Messer Chups (particularly Orgia of dead 2), and Kim & Buran — and that's just the first side of the collection. I haven't even gotten to side b yet.

But here's the greatest thing in the world about these artists and this label: every track and album is released under a Creative Commons license, so you can download, burn, and share the music with anyone you want legally. Comfort Stand sez: "Comfort Stand Recordings is a community-driven label where all releases are free with artwork and liner notes. We strive to bring you recordings that we find interesting, compelling and downright enjoyable. We are not genre-specific and feature a wide range of material, from well-known performers to those loud unknown kids down your block.

We are not a business. We're not out to make a profit. There are no banners, popups, or spam at Comfort Stand. You don't have to register yourself to download the music you like. We operate under the ideology that money need not come between artists and audience."

There's a lot of lousy free music on the internets. It's nice to listen to some really good free music for a change.

Enjoy . . .

Who is Dan O'Dowd and why is his opinion so important that it makes the news on Slashdot? Is he an expert on free software development and embedded operating systems who suddenly admits free software helps terrorists? No, Dan O'Dowd is the CEO of a proprietary software company, using the media as a FUD machine to bash a competing product -- but if you didn't do your research, you wouldn't know that.

Hear Me, I Want to Listen 03/28/2005 01:29 AM

Digital Rights Management (DRM)is a tool that doesn't reflect the general preference of legal music downloaders. Before you read on, hoping that I will advocate for the free distribution of music, let me warn you: I'm a strong supporter of copyright and the protection of intellectual property; I want artists and distributors to make a decent living, but I'm frustrated by the current misuse of digital technology that attempts to thwart illegal distribution. In practice, DRM makes creates compatibility problems that make it excessively difficult, and in most cases, impossible, to listen to music that has been purchased online.

World to US: Listen up!

World to US: Listen up! 08/02/2004 11:50 AM
Our elections will deeply affect much of the world. So, much of the world apparently wants to let us know what it thinks. Talk to US wants to help: Talk to US is a non-partisan public benefit organization seeking to expand US-international dialogue by inviting the opinion of all those affected by our decisions. We are collecting 30-second video messages from around the world, with the most powerful to be broadcast nationally, starting with Link TV (which reaches more than 20 million homes). Should be interesting. Of course, 30 seconds is just about long enough for communications to make deep...

Vani sent me a link to Perhaps the saddest IT story ever told. "Misjudged the corporate market. The company built software products based on little market research, without a clear understanding of what the real problem worth solving was and where the sweet spot in terms of functionality and price/performance would be. Engineers asked where requirements came from, marketing said "trust us," and when it was all over, the sales people asked us what we were smoking. I understand this...

Listen to the authorities and die

Listen to the authorities and die 06/05/2005 11:42 PM
Cory Doctorow: The people in the Twin Towers who ignored the instructions from the cops to stay put survived. The ones who paid attention to them died. Gary Wolf's tantalizing piece in this month's Wired concludes that the future of American security lies in ignoring the Department of Homeland Security, with its "rainbow of doom," its magic airport involuntary nudity machines, and its suspension of the Constitution and relying instead on common sense and democratic fundamentals.
After both buildings were burning, many calls to 911 resulted in advice to stay put and wait for rescue. Also, occupants of the towers had been trained to use the stairs, not the elevators, in case of evacuation.

Fortunately, this advice was mostly ignored. According to the engineers, use of elevators in the early phase of the evacuation, along with the decision to not stay put, saved roughly 2,500 lives. This disobedience had nothing to do with panic. The report documents how evacuees stopped to help the injured and assist the mobility-impaired, even to give emotional comfort. Not panic but what disaster experts call reasoned flight ruled the day.

In fact, the people inside the towers were better informed and far more knowledgeable than emergency operators far from the scene. While walking down the stairs, they answered their cell phones and glanced at their BlackBerries, learning from friends that there had been a terrorist attack and that the Pentagon had also been hit. News of what was happening passed by word of mouth, and fellow workers pressed hesitating colleagues to continue their exit.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. A company named AdNoodle is letting you waive your rights under the Do Not Call list in exchange for cold hard cash. You decide how much it's worth to you - 50 cents, $1, $2 per minute - to have a friendly chat with your local telemarketing concern and answer a "listening comprehension" quiz afterwards. What's your conventional wisdom on this one: Are we bargaining ourselves into a win-win situation? Or are we becoming low-priced callgirls for the bottom-feeders of corporate America? We report, you decide. (via Fark< /a>)

“Music, as any teen in a garage band will tell you, should be as simple to make as it is to listen to,” writes Chris Taylor for Time magazine. “That hasn’t always been the case with musicmaking software though… There had to be an easier way. Now Apple has found it with GarageBand, part of its $49 suite of Mac-only iLife applications released last week. As the name suggests, GarageBand is aimed at amateurs. You don’t need to read the manual to put together a pretty professional-sounding tune. You don’t even need much talent.” [Jan 19]
