Syndication city
by Scott Rosenberg

I'm a late addition to a panel at the Supernova conference this Thursday, June 24: I'll be joining some very interesting people (Technorati's David Sifry; blogger, XML leader and now Sun engineer Tim Bray; and Paul Boutin of Wired and Slate). We're talking about syndication and RSS. The question the panel faces: "Is there more to syndication than reading 300 blogs at once?" What interesting, useful applications for RSS and RSS-like tools are out there or just around the corner?

I've got my own answer(s), but in the decentralized spirit of the conference, I'll open the floor here in comments, and present anything you folks suggest, too.

[Scott Rosenberg]

I have five questions/answers for Scott - I hope he picks me.....

1. How will the evolution of new kinds of micro-content, like Reviews, Events and music playlists - effect the existing blogosphere? A: it will enhance it, making it not onyl richer and deeper, but also make it more relevant to average people - who don't want or feel the need to blog, but who have opinions on movies, books and reataurants.

2. How will FOAF interconnect entire social networks, on-line communities and blogging tool userbases together? A: by enabling digital IDs that encompass multiple presences, end-users will be able to move freely from system to system without having to recreate their strong ties every time.

3. Finally - Salon was one of the first content sites to offer it's readership Blogs. Now that the AlwaysOn Network is also offering social networking - will Salon also offer social networking? I say - yes.

Buy a Piece of Big Mac

Buy a Piece of Big Mac 02/12/2004 03:40 PM

You can now buy a piece of the history-making Virginia Tech Supercomputer. MacMall is selling refurbished Apple G5 computers that came from Virginia Tech. In my opinion the Apple-refurbished systems are priced a bit high at $2799, which is only $200 less than a new G5, but they do come with 1GB of memory (instead of the standard 512MB), plus a little history.

You'll recall that in June of 2003, VT made history by linking 1100 2MHz Dual Processor G5's together to create a low-cost supercomputer, known as System X (but nicknamed Big Mac.) System X made a big splash in the technical world by coming in third in the list of the Top 500 Supercomputers, and making it there at a fraction of the cost of many of the other entries on that list... System X cost a mere $7 million, compared to $250 million for the Japanese Earth Simulator Center's NEC-built 5120-CPU rig and $215 million for the Los Alamos National Laboratory's 8192-chip AlphaServer-based ASCI-Q machine.

Last month Virginia Tech took delivery of 1100 new xServe G5's to replace the original G5 towers. The xServes will benefit the project by yielding the same horsepower but only taking up 1 unit of rack space, requiring only 1000 square feet of space compared to the 3000 used by the original System X. The xServes also run cooler and have a lower power usage, which should save VT a bundle on electricity and cooling.

Pick two

Pick two 04/05/2005 11:38 AM

I've always liked the old designer's adage of "good, fast, or cheap, pick two". That is, a project can be completed quickly, it can be done cheap, and it can be done well, but you need to choose which two of those you want. If you want a good project done quickly, it's gonna be expensive. Fast and cheap? It's gonna suck. In his talk at SXSW, Jason Fried outlined another pick two scenario clients need to be aware of: "fixed scope, fixed timeframe, or fixed budget". Here are some more variations:

Elegant, documented, on time.
Privacy, accuracy, security.
Have fun, do good, stay out of trouble.
Study, socialize, sleep.
Diverse, free, equal.
Fast, efficient, useful.
Cheap, healthy, tasty.
Secure, usable, affordable.
Short, memorable, unique.
Cheap, light, strong.

In considering these sets of trade-offs -- accepting that they are cliches and therefore both overly general but also fairly accurate across a range of diverse situations -- two questions come to mind.

  • Why is "pick two out of three" the rule? Why not "one out of two" or "four out of six"? Or is "pick two out of three" just a cultural assumption?
  • Is there some underlying scientific or economic relationship here? What do the situations in which "pick two" logic applies have in common? In clumsily casting about for an appropriate explanation/metaphor, I considered the triangle (all interior angles add up to 180 degrees), thermodynamics and entropy, Boyle's Law, Hooke's Law, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle (although that's a "one out of two" thing), Ohm's Law, and Newton's Second Law of Motion, but none seem to fit well.

I've poked around a bit online looking for discussions of "pick two" systems and have come up empty. Anyone have any ideas about this? Any good resources to check out? Something tells me I'm missing something obvious here. (Or onto something interesting.)

The Enron Tapes

The Enron Tapes 06/03/2004 01:33 PM

In the annals of corporate corruption, the words of the Enron Energy traders who chortled (CBS) over the screwing their company was giving California and other western states in the 2000 energy crisis are amazing mostly for their brazen quality. Still, if California's political leaders -- from both parties -- hadn't made such a mess of deregulation, the crooks from Enron and other companies never would have had the opportunity in the first place. That doesn't excuse them, any more than a burglar is excused for entering a residence where the owner forgets to lock all the doors. Someday we'll know who Cheney's energy buddies were -- the ones he's trying so hard to shield from the public. The only surprise will be if Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling aren't among them.

The question is: what was he thinking? Was it intentional? Could he have chosen to interpret the upsetting work of art in another less disturbing way?

Own a Piece of History

Own a Piece of History 01/05/2005 07:05 PM

It’s finally time. I’m ready to part with my T reo 600 now that I’m set up on the new T reo 650. My first 600 had problems that caused it to frequently reset itself. I didn’t realize this until I got the replacement 600, which is much more stable. So I’m selling the Treo 600 (for Sprint’s network), a case, and a keyboard for $250. If you’re interested in owning the device that started the infamous What’s on My Treo 600 page, email or IM me (cybrarygal on AIM).

Interesting tangent: I thought Kate’s 19–year old daughter Clare would want it for Christmas, but she says no. Even though she’s all about messaging (which is why I thought the keyboard and full IM capability would be a no-brainer for her), she says it’s too big. She’d rather have something she can easily fold over clamshell-style and fit in her pocket. She truly would rather text message using a phone dialpad than carry a larger phone. Go figure.

MSNBC piece

MSNBC piece 04/13/2005 05:29 PM
This is what I wrote out, intending to jarvis it on MSNBC this afternoon. I'm not sure what I actually said. There's been a fair bit of discussion about the fact that tech conferences, for all their good intentions, haven't been able to attract enough women onto panels or into the audience. So a group of women bloggers have started a conference, called Blogher, July 30 in Santa Clara. One of the contributors to the Blogher blog, Surfette, or Lisa Stone, says that the conference is being organized as a do-ocracy - you want a topic on the schedule, then...

My NYT Mag piece on robots

My NYT Mag piece on robots 11/15/2003 02:18 PM
I wrote a piece on home robotics for the New York Times Magazine as part of a section on Home Automation with contributions from James Gleick, Paul Boutin, Clive Thompson and others; it shipped today:
Home robots were the jet-pack future's sweetest lie: personal assistants working tirelessly and without complaint -- companions, servants and pets. They would be nimble and able, and computers would be blinking omniscient behemoths.

How wrong they were. Just as millions of users defied the first engineers' narrow visions of what a home computer could be, and figured out how to make PC's bend to their will, the cheapness and flexibility of commodity computer components are now enabling a new hobbyist revolution in home robotics. C.P.U.'s -- the brains of a PC -- are cheap like borscht, and the sensors that allow computers to see, hear, feel and smell have likewise plummeted in cost. (Pinhead digital cameras, for example, are so cheap these days that it's hard to find a pocket-size gizmo that doesn't have one built in.) All it takes to turn these pieces into a robot is packaging the brains and the senses atop a mobile platform and stirring in some clever code.
