W3C Celebrates Its Tenth Anniversary
12/19/2004 03:26 PM2004-11-30: This year, the World Wide Web Consortium celebrates its
tenth anniversary—ten years of its mission to lead the Web to its
full potential. On 1 December, W3C Members, Team, invited speakers,
and international media will gather in Boston, USA to reflect on the
progress of the Web, W3C's central role in its growth, and the risks
and opportunities facing the Web during W3C's second decade. "This
special anniversary brings the opportunity to acknowledge the impact
of the Web and the W3C's stewardship role," said Tim Berners-Lee, W3C
Director. "I hope it will also inspire ever more collaboration,
creativity, and understanding across the globe." Sign the greeting
card, read the press release and read more about the W3C Tenth
Anniversary Celebration. (Photo: Ralph R. Swick. News archive)

04/14/2004 02:21 PMNewburyOpen.Net, a commercial free community network, celebrates two
years of operation: The brainchild of Michael Oh, the network offers
free service subsidized by businesses that promote themselves through
the offering. Oh is also known for some of his stunts, like pulling up
a Wi-Fi equipped, Internet linked car in front of a Boston Starbucks.
The network is open in several senses, including offering these white
papers that describe how to create your own, similar network from
infrastructure to marketing. The idea that Oh started hasn't spread
too far yet: there are few other business areas offering the
marketing/advertising/Wi-Fi combination that NewburyOpen.Net is. But
the idea of free Wi-Fi in business districts, sometimes funded by
municipalities and associated businesses, is a meme that keeps
spreading....

iTunes Celebrates First Anniversary
04/28/2004 10:25 AMiTunes has exceeded our wildest expectations during its first
year, charting a new direction for the music industry, said
Apple CEO Steve Jobs. In its first year, music fans have purchased
more than 70 million songs, making it the number one online music
service in the world with more than 70% market share of legal
downloads for singles and albums. iTunes customers are currently
purchasing 2.7 million songs per week, a rate of 140 million songs per
year. To kick off its second year, Apple today launched the third
generation iTunes Music Store, featuring the industrys largest
online music catalog of over 700,000 songs from all five major music
companies and over 450 independent music labels, as well as
groundbreaking new features. [Apr 28]

Helsinki, May 5th 2004 -- The Midgard Open Source Community celebrates
the
5th anniversary of the Content Management Framework project. Midgard
1.0.0
was launched in May 8th 1999 by Jukka Zitting and Henri Bergius.
There will be a Midgard developer meeting in Poznan, Poland on May 8th
2004 to celebrate the anniversary. However, as the members of the
Midgard Project are spread internationally it is impossible for many
to participate. Instead, everybody can raise a beer glass on Saturday
for Midgard and the community that made it possible.A special "5th
anniversary" shirt is available in the Midgard CafePress store, thanks
to Tony Lee.The original Midgard 1.x code base is starting to show
age, and the developer meeting will host debate on the future
strategy, code named Ragnaroek. People unable to participate are
welcomed to join the discussions on the developer mailing list and
Midgard IRC channel.
About MidgardMidgard is an Open Source Content Management System
integrating world's most popular Open Source web development tools —
MySQL, Apache and PHP — providing an environment for deploying
powerful Internet based content management solutions. The Midgard
environment includes a component framework and several web-based
authoring and administration tools. Midgard has an install base of
thousands and powers solutions ranging from simple organizational
websites to huge eGovernment portals.

Arabeyes celebrates third anniversary
with IRC 'evolution' party
07/29/2004 08:21 AMThe date is 7/29, 1200 - 2359 UTC. The place is irc.freenode.net,
#arabeyes. Arabeyes is self-described as "a Meta project that is aimed
at fully supporting the Arabic language in the Unix/Linux
environment." Since Arabeyes began, there have been several Arabic
Linux distributions released, KDE has become usable in Arabic, plenty
of work has been done on Mozilla and OpenOffice.org, and Linux has
started to become recognized as a useful operating system in
Arabic-speaking countries, at least among the geek-cognoscenti crowd.
This year's IRC event celebrates all this. 17 guest "speakers" are
scheduled, and you may want to drop in and meet one or more of them
even if you don't speak Arabic; Linux and open source transcend
linguistic, cultural, and geographic boundaries, and it's good to
support advocacy efforts no matter what language or country they're
in.

« The lovely beach on Rajasaari, a.k.a. dog island. »
We skipped the Samba parade today and took Otava up to Rajasaari
again instead. I've rarely seen a dog so happy as he is to run around
like a crazed puppy and swim around in the water. I'm continually
impressed by the dog parks in
Helsinki and Rajasaari seems like one of the best kept
secrets in town since there are never many dogs around when we visit.
It's a rocky knob of an island with lots of trees, water and sand for
dogs to play in freely off the leash. It's doggie nirvana. It sits
just off the shore from the Prime Minister's home in Meilahti which
likely prevents any development.
Otava certainly likes to swim, but we're going to have to work on his
floating ball retrieval skills as he wades in like a water buffalo,
drinks around it, sniffs and then wanders off while drinking more
water in search of something more interesting. Perhaps we need to
stuff some sausage into the floating kong ball to pique his curiosity.
:)
I left work early on Friday in order to try some mämmijäätelö at the
Häme regional fair in Senate Square. Many of the Finnish regions seem
to offer these during the summertime and it's fun to try regional
oddities. I am still pouting that we arrived too late for the mämmi
ice cream and I'm thinking that I'll just have to make some myself.
Otava got to try some of the boar pyttipannu since he caught a whiff
of it while we were snaking our way around the stalls in search of ice
cream and decided that he was going to park it in front of the
pyttipannu stand until he was served. Oh, the ladies loved him and
gave him a wee taste which sealed our fate of having to buy some and
lure him away with it. At least he wasn't behaving like he does at the
pet store where he walks along the treat aisle and just shoves his
face into the bin of stuff he likes the most. :)
One disappointment was being with a friend who wanted to take some
pictures of some cute ceramic pots in the Häme market. I was busy
holding Otava, who was interested in heading towards the food section,
and couldn't quite believe that the vendor started giving her an
incredibly hard time about 'using the pictures against her' or some
really wacky justification for being viciously rude instead of saying
'please, no pictures.' It didn't occur to me until we were walking
home that it was very likely because the friend isn't white and I
thought about going back without Otava to see if I would get the same
treatment if I tried to take pictures of her cute, but unoriginal,
pottery though I wasn't sure how I'd respond if the vendor were to
smile and offer to show me other items while I was taking a few
pictures. It's always the little things that get under your skin and
fester.
