Edwin Khodabakchian interview

Edwin Khodabakchian interview

Edwin Khodabakchian interview 07/17/2004 01:44 AM

BPEL (business process execution language) is the XML-based language of Web services "orchestration" -- that is, a means to connect multiple Web services to create end-to-end business processes. Recently, InfoWorld Test Center Lead Analyst Jon Udell interviewed BPEL expert Edwin Khodabakchian about the future of this language. Khodabakchian is CEO of Collaxa, a pure-play BPM startup whose BPM orchestration product has supported BPEL for more than a year. Collaxa was acquired by Oracle earlier this month, and its BPEL Server product is now marketed as Oracle BPEL Process Manager. Full story at [In foWorld.com]

Rebecca Blood s tarted a new feature on her site, setting out to interview bloggers about how they got started, why they do what they do, and what others can learn from that. I was lucky enough to be the first one, and she's posted part one of our interview (part two will be posted Friday).

If you also blog, you'll probably find something useful in it. It was good to talk to Rebecca and get into some hearty questions (mostly in part 2). I'm used to doing interviews with reporters writing for a general audience so it was refreshing to get really specific weblog-oriented questions directed at me.

TCL Team Interview

TCL Team Interview 03/13/2003 03:47 AM
Unlike Perl or Python, which are still maintained by their original authors (Larry Wall and Guido van Rossum), Tcl ownership has changed hands - Dr. John Ousterhout, who wrote Tcl while a professor at UC Berkeley, has moved on to other endeavors (although he does keep an eye on his creation), and others have stepped forward to not only maintain Tcl, but work on improving and extending it.

Several of the "core team", including the lead maintainer, Jeff "The Tcl Guy" Hobbs, Andreas Kupries, Donal Fellows and Mark Harrison, were kind enough to take some time to respond to some questions about a variety of topics via email. We start by asking Jeff about how the torch was passed...

People complain about PHP's lack of focus, particularly from a business perspective. Perhaps this is a model we can all learn from. After all TCL is extremely popular as an embedded software for many commercial applications.

Interview - James Atkinson , Founder of phpBB: An interesting interview with the guy who started the phpBB project. It's a good look into how a successful open-source project is run.

The biggest thing is to listen to your users. They drive your product forward and they help you support it. Secondly, you have to stick to your ideals. One of the reasons that phpBB is as successful as it is, compared to other "free" forum scripts, is because our project is very stable. We've never changed our name, we've never changed our leadership, and we've never changed our license. We've stuck to the ideals on which we originally founded phpBB, and this approach has given our community the perception that phpBB is strong and stable.

David Pescovitz: Warhol7L is fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld's imprint at art book publishing house Steidl. I was just at the 7L bookshop in Paris and one of the many objects of desire I encountered was Andy Warhol's Interview: 35 Years of Pop, a seven-volume boxed "best of" collection of the magazine's first (and arguably best) decade. Each book has a different theme: The Covers, The Pictures, The Interviews, The Andy Warhol Interviews, The Fashion, The Directors, and The Back of the Book. There's also a facsimile of the entire first issue from 1969 and the 35th anniversary issue published in October. The whole shebang weighs 88 pounds, but fortunately Lagerfeld brilliantly outfitted the box with wheels and a handlle. Link

Best RSS Parser Yet 01/06/2003 12:21 AM
The newest version of my RSS Parser is now available for download. I am really happy about this release. It fixed a lot of things previous versions were lacking. It now has clean error handling, optional caching, and more efficient code. Also, the function can now be called as many times as necessary on the same page. Previously, the function would break when called more than once on the same page. You can download this new version here. I will update my RSS Parser article tomorrow to reflect this update. As usual, please e-mail me any questions, comments, or suggestions you may have.

An upgrade to the RSS parser

An upgrade to the RSS parser 11/18/2002 12:58 PM
A while back I read on Dive Into Mark a rant about the sheer volume of traffic people hitting off of his RSS feed were causing. At the time I was developing my RSS reader that is in use now at this site. It's completely written by me, and I'm happy with it. It extracts all of the descriptions, links, and titles out of RSS feeds in any version (atleast I haven't experienced otherwise in my browsing) and returns them in an associative array. Also, it caches the RSS files in serialized format so that it doesn't have to repeatedly hit the servers the RSS files reside on, and subsequent requests do not require reparsing. Instead, it only requests the file if the cached file was written more than an hour and a half ago. But, my RSS parser still did not meet the need described in the above linked Dive into Mark article. Basically, Mark (and others) only want their RSS feeds being requested if they have been modified recently. "Recently" is defined by Mark as 3 hours, which is reasonable. I didn't know how to do this with my RSS parser, so I did some research. I found some information on various sites about doing conditional GET statements with PHP, and now my parser will only fetch the file off the remote server if it has been modified within the last three hours. I am now using this new version of my parser. The parser is not perfect, but I really like it. To view the source of it, click here. An article will follow soon.

New Version of RSS Parser Available 12/14/2002 12:51 PM
The newest version of my RSS parser is now available for download. You can read more about the parser in my article about it, which has been updated to reflect the new version. You may download the parser here. This new version provides more information for use than the old version did. The old version only cached the Link, Title, and Description items from the RSS file, where this new version stores everything, including Channel information. The only information not stored are element attributes, which should be available in the next release. The RSS parser is now distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Use the print_r() function after calling the RSS parser to see what is now available.
