Pokia: Retro Handsets

Pokia: Retro Handsets 07/08/2004 12:29 PM

pokia.jpg
imageThe Times -- the Home & Garden section, of course, not Circuits -- has an article about those Pokia handsets, the retrofitted old-style phones that occasionally show up for sale on eBay. More art pieces than products, the idea behind Pokia, says creator Nicolas Roope, is to challenge the mobile industry to free themselves from the sci-fi styling rut and start taking more aesthetic chances with the form factors of our phones. It's a cute hack -- although I doubt there's a burgeoning trend in it -- and I have to say I agree with the general sentiment. Who wouldn't like to see a phone made out of wood, or copper, or meat?

Roope has even created a special edition Pokia to take advantage of the publicity commemorate The Times' profile.

International Phones Now at Stage 2: The
“Safety Device”

The ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell phone purchase during 2004, and believe the results show that US citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are increasingly confident to travel internationally. Just when things could not get more weird, iTunes is coming to a Motorola cell phone near you. A bizarre creation from some the folks at Motorola and Apple, iTunes for the cell phone will include it’s own media player and some of the most annoying ringtones known to man. (The latter is a bit of speculation, but I bet you I am right on the money.)…

She then goes on to advise that you “try it before you buy it”. Snap some photos to see how the images turn out. Just the what folks on a cruise want to hear, ringing cell phones. Associated Press has reported that cell phone service will be coming to a ship near you. The technology that allows for cell service will also give passengers access to Internet access, pay-per-view television and digital music libraries. Correct me if I am wrong here, but don’t we go on cruises to “get away” from this sort of thing?…

Mobile Users Top 1.5 Billion

"As of the first week of June 2004, the mobile service industry broke the 1.5 billion subscriber mark worldwide. Research firm EMC also predicts that the industry will pass the 2 billion mark as early as 2006, far earlier than some other predictions, and reach 2.45 billion by the end of 2009." [infoSync World]

Guess where a lot of that growth is going to come from?

G eneration Text

"New research from Mobile Youth - a mobile telecoms consultancy - found that 700,000 (20%) of primary school children own mobile phones and that the under 10s "represent the fastest-growing segment of mobile phone ownership within Britain".

'They are the key fashion accessory which no self respecting child can do without,' says the report. It predicts that by 2006, more than one million primary school kids (a third of all five-to-nine year olds) will own mobiles." [The Guardian]
