Alternate News Reader UIs
Alternate News Reader UIs
02/10/2004 03:02 AM
Here are some alternative news reader UI ideas to consider.
First two are usuable
as is, but the rest require quite a bit of polishing and crafting
before they can
be useful. I came up with them while I was sitting at a
recent workshop after
hearing the speaker complain about how boring existing news readers
are.
Flashcard UI
News item are displayed on flashcards. Background color,
font size, and
number of items per card (1-7), and transition
effect should be configurable.
User can navigate forward or backward to next or previous set of
headline. Up
or escape to wider view (list of news or sources) should be
available. Fullscreen-mode
is essential.
Movie Credit Screen UI
Similar to Flashcard-style UI but visual presentation effects seen
commonly in movie
opening or closing credit screens are used. UI should not
emphasize more
than one news item at one time. For example, if news items
fade or blur in and
out then current candidate for further reading should be most
noticeable.
Background music and entertaining audio ads can be be used
simultaneously. Again
fullscreen-mode is essential. Screensaver-mode is optional.
Video Game UI
Wild array of UIs are possible here including using news items as
prizes, gates, or
monsters.
Multiplayer UI
You can see what others are interested in using various UI schemes
such as footprints,
ranking, etc.
A refined version of these UI might fade in a transparent headline
over the screen
or in some assigned space for a 'while' when user hasn't moved the
mouse or typed
anything for certain amount of time. Since most news one
might read using a
news reader aren't urgent, you can spread hundreds of headlines
over the entire day
instead of flooding the reader with large number of
popups simultaneously like
SharpReader does.
These ideas are just branches off a single idea: news readers as
boob tubes for couch
potatos. Instead of overwelming the user with long list
of articles and
folders, turn it into a linear experience like the TV.
Press the power
button to turn it on and just sit back until you see something you
like and then press
another button to dive in. Add another button for
fast-forward or switch the
channel.

IETF News
IETF News
08/06/2004 02:57 AMThe
IETF, despite the fact that it
keeps the Internet running, doesn’t get much news coverage. I
suspect that’s partly because its structure is pretty well 100%
opaque and incomprehensible to outsiders (and it seems to not a few
insiders, especially newbies like me). There’s actually no such
organization as the IETF but there are (in alphabetical order)
CNRI (who run the
Secretariat) and
Foretec and the
Internet Architecture Board (IAB) and
the
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority
(IANA) and the
Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the
Internet Engineering Steering Group
(IESG) and the
Internet Research
Task Force and the
Internet Society
(ISOC) and the
RFC
Editor. Anyhow,
there’s news. Big news, I think. Most of it I
don’t understand and the parts that I do I may have been told in
confidence. The fairly severe angst coming out of this spilled over
into the Jabber channels from Thursday night’s plenary session. I
think it may be as smooth and simple as the IETF trying to do the same
thing more efficiently, or it could be a lot more complicated and
ugly. Don’t ask me to explain it; but I think it matters.

UC Berkeley News Center gets an RSS feed
UC Berkeley News Center gets an RSS feed
04/09/2004 04:01 PMFor the first five years I lived in Berkeley, I might as well have
lived in Turlock for all the contact I had with UC Berkeley. I lived
my life in the tunnel zone of work, home and parenting, familiar to
all working parents of small children. But last year, between fewer
demands on the work front and the maturation of the youngest progeny,
I finally emerged from that long tunnel, and resolved to begin making
use of some of the resources available to me as someone who lives a
mile away from the UC Berkeley campus. I began to attend seminars,
took the progeny to Cal Day (highly recommended), and went and heard
some of the many speakers who come to Cal every year (and wrote up my
impressions of some of them). I have friends who teach at UC Berkeley,
and they tell me that it is a very feudal organization, and each
department is a fiefdom unto itself. My experience as a virtual and
actual visitor certainly bears (pun intended) that out. It is as true
when it comes to putting on events as everything else. Departments
bring in speakers with national and international reputations, from
fields as different as medicine, journalism, and business, but all too
often they are only publicized by flyers and word of mouth within
those departments. I started trying to make a habit of checking the
online calendars for the Journalism School, the Hass School of
Business, the Goldman School of Public Policy, Boalt Law School, and
the School of Public Health on a regular basis to scope out upcoming
events. One quick survey of the calendars confirmed the feudal nature
of the institution -- each department's calendar is created with a
different vendor's tool and uses a different format, and the
frequently and accuracy of updates varies widely. I couldn't even find
anything that looked like a useful calender on the totally lame
website of the department closest to my professional interests, that
of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department. In
spite of my best intentions, I didn't check the calendars that
frequently, and all too often I would only find out about a speaker or
interesting conference after it happened. Then I discovered UC
Berkeley's Critic's Choice Calendar, which does a reasonable job of
publicizing events on campus likely to be of wide interest. I decided
to put together...

"Feed Your Reader" Firefox Feed
Extension
"Feed Your Reader" Firefox Feed
Extension
09/20/2004 10:22 AMWhen Firefox add
ed RSS support, I had mixed reactions. On the one hand, I was
excited by the boost RSS would receive by being supported in a popular
browser. But on the other hand, for obvious reasons I wasn't wild
about how Firefox built RSS into the browser without enabling users to
choose an external RSS reader.
So, I was glad when several FeedDemon customers talking about building an extension to enable FeedDemon
to take advantage of the new Firefox RSS features.
Michael Koziarski rose to
the challenge and created F
eed Your Reader, a Firefox extension that enables you to subscribe
to feed in FeedDemon - or any other RSS reader that supports the feed:
// protocol. Which means that even though the extension was
designed with FeedDemon in mind, it's not specific to FeedDemon.
Initial tests show that it also works with NetNewsWire on the
Mac.
Once this extension is installed, you'll see an additional "FYR"
icon in Firefox's status bar right next to the existing RSS icon.
Clicking the FYR icon displays a menu of auto-discovered feeds, and
clicking one of these feeds will display FeedDemon's "New Channel"
wizard to subscribe to it.
Details on Feed Your Reader are h
ere, and the project page is here. If you're viewing
this in Firefox, the download link to the XPI (extension) is here

Alternate history in bite-sized
chunklets
Alternate history in bite-sized
chunklets
06/12/2004 03:56 PM"Today in Alternate History" is a site that racks, in "today in
history format," several alternate history timelines. It's nice skiffy
narrative in bite-sized chunks:
in 1862, the Human League takes credit for a series of bombings
against Mlosh citizens of Britain. The Crown vows to catch them, but
there are sympathetic elements in Scotland Yard that slow the
investigation.
in 1934, Pascal, LLC, with the assistance of Carla Lambert, persuaded
Congress to fund a system of linking Eddies together such that they
could share information constantly. Using telegraph lines and radio
frequencies set aside for them by the Congress, Pascal constructed a
Knowledge Railroad that made the almost instantaneous transmission of
information possible across the nation.
in 1958, Buddy Holly reunited with his old band, The Crickets, for a
successful US tour. This reunion produced such hits as I'll Be Lovin'
Her, Puerto Rican Mama, and their remake of I'll Be Seeing You.
in 1977, President Reagan enacted sweeping tax cuts, mostly aimed at
the well-to-do, but with some at lower ends of the economic spectrum.
They didn't prove to be the stimulus he expected, though, and the
nation plunged into a deep recession.
in 1982, King Charles of England called on all exiled nobles of
England to return and take their rightful place at his side. He
announced a general amnesty for those who had supported the Nazis, and
declared that England would rise again to its former glory.
in 1992, filmmaker Oliver Stone releases JBR, in which he attempts to
give credence to People's Attorney Presley's arguments that Comrade
President Rosenberg was killed by a conspiracy rather than a lone
counter-revolutionary. The film is a huge success, prompting the
Communist Party to call for its banning.
