A British tech consultant has launched an unusual project that puts tech buyers in position to do something largely unheard of in tech circles: wrangle price cuts from Microsoft. The Incubator Club guarantees anonymity for tech buyers wanting to evaluate Linux. Founder Eddie Bleasdale of consultancy Netproject got the idea after helping the London borough of Newham test Linux desktop programs last fall.

Memory Reading Hard Drive
06/30/2004 12:37 PM

DriveProVP300_2.jpg imageThe Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for only the price of additional hard drives.

Just type in the word or words you want picture-ized and it will show you the results. There must be a sizable number of pictures for each letter... keep hitting the Display button & you'll get a different assortment of letter pictures each time.

Just the thing for your next ransom note. And you won't even leave behind a cut up magazine for the CSI guys to find!

Letters from VALIS

Letters from VALIS 01/06/2005 07:46 PM
David Pescovitz: A woman named Claudia is auctioning off a collectio n of 60 letters (186 pages) that surrealist science fiction author Philip K. Dick wrote to her over a span of nearly two decades. The starting bid of the eBay auction is $1,000.
"We corresponded between 1974 and 1981. For sale are all the letters he wrote me between 1974 and 1975, when I was writing a U.S. master's thesis about books he'd published a decade earlier, at a time when only the French accorded him critical respect and his first language editions had lapsed out of print: Originals of over 60 individual letters, 186 pages (all those he signed on the right side of the page).

The letters are about Valis and V.A.L.I.S. (because that's what he was writing then); they are also a linear chronology of his "long inner trip" in his own words (the drawing is what a dream instructed him to draw); they are also about Ubik and UBIK (because that's what I was writing about); they say what he wanted them to say."
