More Techie IPOs
More Techie IPOs
04/20/2004 02:00 PMLast month we noted that an awful lot of tech companies were
getting
ready to go public, and since it signaled the (at least momentary)
opening of the IPO window, it seemed likely that lots of other tech
companies that have been hanging around waiting would try to take
advantage of it. So, it's no surprise to hear more and more tech IPO
stories. Just as online diamond store
Blue Nile goes public, everyone's favorite lawsuit magnet,
Michael Robertson is getting set to
file the IPO paperwork for Lindows - which is apparently still
the company's name, despite their recent product name switch to
Linspire.
Techie Xmas list
Techie Xmas list
12/02/2003 01:40 AMDan Gillmor's put together a list of geeky Xmas prezzies that I quite
like:
Inexpensive:
# Free software. OK, almost nothing is truly free. But free
open-source software comes pretty close. I'm running the Mozilla
Firebird Web browser on my everyday personal computer, for example.
It's fast, capable and reliable. Isn't that enough these days?
On the Web, meanwhile, are vast numbers of excellent utilities such as
the Google Toolbar, which works only with Windows and recent versions
of Internet Explorer.
# USB plug-ins. Once entrepreneurs glommed onto the fact that USB
ports on computers offer elecrical power in addition to data
connectivity, they came up with a raft of cool stuff.
I use the Zip-LINQ retractable cables from Keyspan to charge my phone
and make connections with several other devices. They cost $15 to $25
or so, but mean fewer power bricks to lug around. A colleague at Hong
Kong University, where I'm teaching part time this month, also just
brought to work a USB cable that connects to a sleeve you slide around
your coffee cup. I haven't been able to discover if anyone in the U.S.
is selling NewMotion's $6 "Cup Warmer" (but I'm planning to bring
several home).

The Latest Techie Complaints
04/15/2004 01:02 PMSo what does a techie have to complain about these days? It what must
have been a fairly cathartic column, one tech columnist just tossed
a few of his tech complaints into a single
column that doesn't even bother trying to tie them all together.
The three big complaints: (1) every time he finds a product he likes,
it gets bought by another larger company (and, he implies, the larger
company then kills what he liked about the product) (2) it's
increasingly difficult to actually find stuff you want on a search
engine and (3) plug and play often plugs, but doesn't play. The best
part, though, is his description of the inevitable phone call after
the new device doesn't work: "Is your computer turned on? Are you
connected using a USB or firewire cable? Do you have more than a
fifth-grade education?" Something about tax day seems to bring out
people's complaining nature.

Roy Disney resigns from Disney, slams
Eisner
12/02/2003 01:43 AMRoy Disney has resigned from the Disney Board of Directors, and has
sent a scathing email to Michael Eisner explaining, in exorciating
detail, exactly why he's leaving the company his uncle founded.
1. The failure to bring back ABC Prime Time from the ratings abyss
it
has been in for years and your inability to program successfully the
ABC
Family Channel. Both of these failures have had, and I believe will
continue
to have, significant adverse impact on shareholder value.
2. Your consistent micro-management of everyone around you with
the
resulting loss of morale throughout the Company.
3. The timidity of your investments in our theme park business. At
Disney's California Adventure, Paris and now in Hong Kong, you have
tried to
build parks "on the cheap" and they show it and the attendance figures
reflect it.

aging-related health information easily accessible for adults 60 and
older. It is also a useful tool for family members and friends who are
seeking online health information for their older relatives. This site
was developed by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the
National Library of Medicine (NLM), both part of the National
Institutes of Health (NIH).
The web site is organized by
health topic and currently includes information on Alzheimer's
Disease, Caring for Someone with Alzheimer's, and Exercise for Older
Adults. Within each topic there are sections containing general
background information, open-captioned videos, short quizzes, and
frequently asked questions (FAQs). Other health topics of interest to
older adults will be added in the future.

Senior Execs Dig Broadband
Senior Execs Dig Broadband
05/26/2004 02:41 AMWell, it looks like we may finally be getting past the era when senior
execs still needed their emails printed out by an assistant, so they
can read them on paper. 99% of senior executives surveyed now use the
internet at work, and 97% use it at home. In fact,
7
7% have broadband access at home, and many use PDAs and wireless
technologies (both handheld devices and wireless networking) in their
homes. When they're online, it seems like they do just about what
you'd expect them to do: a fair amount of time is spent doing email.
When they surf the web, they're most likely to be reading business
news (which, one hopes, includes a daily visit to Techdirt). They
also have no problems buying things online, with approximately 80%
buying airline tickets and books or reserving hotel rooms online. It
seems clear that the era of the completely clueless senior exec when
it comes to the internet is quickly fading away.
