piece from Tim O’Reilly. The O’Reilly people track sales
trends in tech books, not just their own but the whole industry.
They’re transparent about their methodology and in my opinion these
numbers are very solid and believable. Anyhow, in this case, you need
to read the narrative that goes along with the picture. The growth is
being driven by the OSS+Java stuff: Spring, Struts, Lucene, and so on.
Hey Tim, how about doing middle-aged eyes a favor and making future
versions of the graph a little bigger?

A Good WebSphere is Hard to Find
A Good WebSphere is Hard to Find
02/13/2003 03:56 AMDuring Chinese New Year, I met an IBM sales manager and he asked me if
I had any expertise with WebSphere. After talking more, it turns out
in Malaysia that WebSphere and J2EE skills are sorely lacking and his
customers are unhappy with the local IBM solution providers and their
WebSphere implementations. In many cases, they are having performance
problems, and the complexity of the technology makes it difficult to
understand where the bottleneck is.
I think that Java is a great language, but I have always felt that
many of the Java technologies are designed to do everything, with the
result being that it is confusing, hard to use and harder to tune for
developers with limited expertise, which would be the typical
programmer profile in a newly developed country like Malaysia.
That's why I believe a simpler technology such as PHP is superior for
countries like Malaysia where the skill-base is still growing. The
learning curve is lower, the API is powerful and complete for web
development, and it scales well.
PHP has to overcome a few perceptions though. Many people have posted
to this site saying that PHP is a toy system, headache to maintain,
etc, etc. The truth of the matter is that a poor programmer blames his
tools. Poorly designed code is a problem with the author's skill, and
rarely the technology. That is why J2EE is so unusual, because many
Java experts have come to the realization that the J2EE is too complicated,
and for once we can blame the technology.
The other half of the matter is education. There are too many badly
written PHP articles on how to create a bulletin board or login
system. A lot of poor design is due to ignorance and inexperience. The
recent arrival of PHP magazines edited by experts such as Marco Tabini are a welcome dose of
good medicine.
