Jedi Council Boxed Photos

Jedi Council Boxed Photos 06/01/2004 12:02 PM
RoboChris comes through once again with new photos of the third and fourth Jedi High Council Screen Scenes, this time in the OTC style packaging (minus the OTC logo, of course). The third set includes Plo Koon, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Eeth Koth, and the fourth set includes Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Ki-Adi-Mundi. These characters imply these figures are based on their appearances in The Phantom Menace, although sharp-eyed fans will point out that several of the outfits are not movie-accurate. Sharp-eyed fans have also noted that the completed circle on the back (of which images first appeared recently) looks as if Eeth Koth and Adi Gallia appear in the council twice, although most likely this is Stass Allie and Agen Kolar, both seen in Attack of the Clones. Looks like Coleman Trebor will not appear in the Council after all...

NYT: IRC is like the cantina scene from
Star Wars, but with porn and warez (oh

05/06/2004 03:07 AM
The NYT has run a goofy Red-scare piece on Internet Relay Chat, with hysterical, alarmist bushwah like "It is still possible - though sometimes a bit difficult - to find mature technical discussions among the tens of thousands of I.R.C. chat rooms" -- I mean, how "difficult" is it to type "/join #unix"?
When I.R.C. started in the 1980's, it was best known as a way for serious computer professionals worldwide to communicate in real time. It is still possible - though sometimes a bit difficult - to find mature technical discussions among the tens of thousands of I.R.C. chat rooms, known as channels, operating at any one time. There are also respectable I.R.C. systems and channels - some operated by universities or Internet service providers - for gamers seeking opponents or those who want to talk about sports or hobbies.

Still, I.R.C. perhaps most closely resembles the cantina scene in "Star Wars'': a louche hangout of digital smugglers, pirates, curiosity seekers and the people who love them (or hunt them). There seem to be I.R.C. channels dedicated to every sexual fetish, and I.R.C. users speculate that terrorists also use the networks to communicate in relative obscurity. Yet I.R.C. has its advocates, who point to its legitimate uses.

While Chalmun's Cantina in Mos Eisley isn't really the kind of place where everybody knows your name, today's Power of the Force 2 Photo Archives update should help in identifying some of the local patrons. The Shistavanen scout Lak Sivrak, the Kubasz spy Garindan and the Chadra-Fan/Talz team of thieves, Kabe and Muftak, would all probably rather remain anonymous.

New iMac Details

New iMac Details 08/15/2004 09:26 PM
Think Secret a popular Mac rumor site has claimed to receive the specifications from sources regarding Apple's upcoming re-designed iMac. Along with brief description of what this new PC will look like.

The new iMac will apparently not have an adjustable neck, but instead will feature an all-in-one design. A design that will be in sync with its logic board, optical drive, and other components. Think Secret's sources claim that it will similar to Sony's VAIO W700G. Also saying that "It's not fair to compare the new iMac to the Sony model". Adding that the iMac will have sleeker lines and contours, and knowing Apple it's going to look interesting.

It's reported that the new iMac will offer speeds between 1.6 GHz and 1.8 GHz (using the G5 processor). All models will be able to support a maximum of up to 2GB of DDR memory, AirPort Extreme-ready, built in microphone, and built-in stereo speakers. If this rumor is true iMac fans won’t have wait long for its arrival. As it's already being reported to be unveiled at the Apple Expo in Paris (August 31, 2004).

Keep in mind that this is still a rumor, but Think Secret has a good track record of its rumors being true. If that's the case this new iMac will certainly have an attractive look. After all just about anything is better than Sony’s design.

HOT: Rio Chroma Details

HOT: Rio Chroma Details 08/12/2004 08:07 PM

Leaked information on the website of an online retailer has revealed more information about Rio's upcoming hard disk-based player, the Rio Chroma. While most of the data we already knew, such as the onboard SD-card expansion slot (although it's listed as SDIO in the specs, which might mean possible peripherals, such as Wi-Fi cards could conceivably be added), there are at least three confirmed bits of information that are very interesting. The first is that the Chroma will indeed come in a 20GB version (I had been betting on a 40GB version). The second is the price: listed at $390, but "on sale" for $319. And the final bit of info is just a little more information on the screen, which is listed as "16-bit," which can be read as a 65k-color screen.

Original speculation had put the Rio Chroma release date as next Spring. Should we expect it sooner? Bear in mind this information is not from Rio itself and could be inaccurate.

Still, can we get a picture, Rio?

I'll post the Technical Details information after the jump in case it is pulled. (Thanks, Aaron!)

More iMac G5 Details

More iMac G5 Details 09/10/2004 04:53 PM

While we’re waiting for the first round of iMac G5 reviews to hit the net, MacMinute found Apple’s Developer Note on the new system. I found a few interesting tidbits amidst the technical stuff.

Available as a fully-integrated, build-to-order option, Bluetooth is an open specification that enables short-range wireless connections between desktop and laptop computers and a host of other peripheral devices.

[…]

Bluetooth is available as a build-to-order option, which is installed by Apple at the time of purchase as a fully integrated module. Accessing the Bluetooth capabilities without purchasing the integrated module will require a third-party dongle that may not support all present and future features supported by the internal module.

Translation: If you think you might want Bluetooth, and you don’t want to use a dongle, you’ll have to pony up the extra $50 up front, because you won’t be able to add it later.

Here’s a neat feature that might be common on Macs, but it was new to me:

The user has the option at boot time to put the computer into a mode of operation called Target Disk Mode (TDM).

When the iMac G5 is in Target Disk Mode and connected to another Macintosh computer by a FireWire cable, the iMac G5 operates like a FireWire mass storage device with the SBP-2 (Serial Bus Protocol) standard. Target Disk Mode has two primary uses:

  • high-speed data transfer between computers
  • diagnosis and repair of a corrupted internal hard drive

That’s a pretty cool idea. You could debug the HD without removing it. Of course, there have been problems in the past with OSX actually causing corruption on external FireWire drives. I guess they figure that they have that sorted out. There’s also a note on the measures taken for cooling:

The iMac G5 uses an advanced system management unit (SMU) to manage the thermal and power conditions, while keeping the acoustic noise to a minimum.

[…]

Temperature and power consumption are monitored by the operating system which communicates with the SMU, which in turn controls and monitors fan operation. If Mac OS X is not booted, thermal management must be provided by the alternate development operating system. Note: If Mac OS X is not booted and the alternate development operating system does not manage the fans, the fans go into an unmanaged state and run at full speed.

Linux kernel developers, start your emacs sessions.

RSVP if you like, but not necessary. The topic: disruptive publishing: blogging, audio, video, and the ridiculously easy means to do it, available to everyone.

There's a #lobbycon channel on Freenode, plus Wifi at the location to record audio and video, etc. Nice little test, I suppose of blogcasting 'conferences'. There's a wiki, too.

New Blu-ray Details Emerge

New Blu-ray Details Emerge 08/05/2004 10:18 AM
Specifics have been murky about how the Blu-ray Disc format can succeed DVD by enabling the recording of high-definition content. But the companies behind the format have recently tipped their hand to their strategy, including future enhancements.

DVDs don't have the storage capacity to accommodate an entire movie in high-definition format but Blu-ray Disc does. That's largely because it uses blue lasers to read and write data on the disc, rather than the red lasers used by DVD. A blue laser makes a smaller spot on the disc surface, which means the space required for one bit of data is smaller--and more data can be fit onto a 12-centimeter disc.
