Modular By Design

Modular By Design 08/10/2004 03:43 PM
Tristan Louis writes "After much reading and thinking about convergence, I started putting together what I hope can eventually become a grand unified theory of convergence in digital media. I call the concept "Modular by Design". The intro defines the concept, which I followed up so far with posts about its impact on the music industry in general, the Digital download music arena in particular and broadcast TV. Over the next few days, I plan to also create entries about cable TV, telephony, news gathering (weblogs?), and software." Interesting theory, which is similar to what some others have been talking about lately as well. This does put it all into a nice reference frame, however. It's basically taking the web-services model and applying it to just about anything digital, recognizing that opportunity grows via network effects of being able to easily connect the various modules. There are still business model questions raised, but business models have a way of following opportunities without much difficulty.

Ultra X-Connect Modular PSU

Ultra X-Connect Modular PSU 08/09/2004 07:27 AM

xcon1.jpg imageI didn't even have to read ViperLair's review of the Ultra X-Connect 500 Watt PSU (that's power supply unit, the thing that gives your PC juice) to know that it is going to be a big hit among the build-your-own PC set - that just took one look at a picture. Not only is the entire thing chromed (shiny is the case modding geek kryptonite. Well, that and actual glowing kryptonite) but it's also modular, which is to say that instead of five or six power connection cords running out in a bundle from the back of the PSU, there is instead normal, swappable cables that can be connected as you need them. Not only does that look nicer, but the lack of extraneous wires means more air can flow around inside your case.

At $129 it's a little more expensive that a standard PSU, but compared to other high-quality 500 watt power supplies, it's really not bad. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that the included shielded cables are UV ready, meaning they glow under blacklight. You know, just in case that matters.

Modular UI development work

Modular UI development work 04/18/2004 12:37 AM
A New Class of Applications.

Took a look at SimpleViewer, "a free, customizable Flash image viewing application". It's downloaded to your webserver, simply installed, and configured by XML. The design philosophy has a lot in common with worldKit: simple, powerful, self hosted, swf ubiquity, low cost (well free). Zoomify, "Fast, hi-res images in Flash" is another flash based product, with a similar philosophy (and a really great product :: I'm working on integrating with worldKit).

It's different than Rich Internet Applications, because this software is designed to enable creation. Put sophisticated tools in the hands of people with millions of ideas, specialized knowledge, and the will to share it.

Laszlo and their steal able widgets are another take. It's also related to Marc's Digital Lifestyle Aggregators and the widespread New Kinds of Microcontent. And the mutlitude of javascript widgets, for blogrolling and weather and technorati and moods. Include myRadio nuggets too.

I'm not too sure a super, solve-everything, micro-content browser is coming around any time soon. It may not be doable. Putting together smaller, focused pieces definitely is.

[Brain Off]

Mikel is defineitely one of the smartest, most grokked in folks around.  I cried when he left SF.  But he seems to be flourishing "over there".

SystemX Modular Lighting Design 04/15/2005 09:59 AM

systemx_lighting_grids.jpgMoCo Loco shows us the SystemX modular lighting system. "SystemX is an X-shaped lightning module that can be interconnected with other SystemX modules to create lighting structures." The system can take the form of just two or three X's connected together, to a near-infinite expanse with zones of differing temperatures of light throughout. Very cool, even if there's no word as to retail availability or pricing.

Lancaster is a new PVR from TerraTec that uses an Ethernet-linked component system comprised of a tuner, an interface box, and one or more storage boxen. The keen thing about this is that you can add storage by adding more boxes -- and, presumably, you can just grab a storage box and bring it over to a friend's place and plug it into her Lancaster network. Ecosmart Portable Modular Fireplace

Ecosmart Portable Modular Fireplace 06/22/2005 01:58 AM

splash_2.jpgAt first glance, this ethanol-powered fireplace seems like a waste of perfectly good booze. While we all like curling up to a fire with the Missus, we obviously also enjoy a fine, long bender involving a jukebox, a forlorn love letter, and a bottle of grain alcohol.

This modular fireplace by Ecosmart allows you to place a burning object anywhere in your home. Powered by ethanol or its minty-fresh cousin, methylated spirits, these $2200-$7000 fireplaces seem to be just extremely expensive alcohol lamps, but what do I know?

danese_toolbar_rota_2_1_.jpgDanese Milano offers up their modular desktop container system, called the Toolbar. Based on "cells," each cell can contain modules—a penholder container, a CD holder, a document holder and the like. A horizontal bar lets you hang them up on the wall if you so choose and obsessive-compulsives can tweak the layout and order to their heart's content. MoCo Loco has more pics and a bit more info, but I'm relatively certain it's not for sale yet/ever, sadly—I'd love to pick one of these up at Office Max or a finer office furnishings store.

Widgets, modules and the future of
modular design

Jason Kotke writes....

Interesting note on Dave Hyatt's site about Dashboard and the version of Safari that will ship with Tiger (Hyatt is the lead developer on Safari): [The Dashboard widgets] are Web pages, plain and simple (with extra features thrown in for added measure). Apple's own web site says "build your own widgets using the JavaScript language", but that's sort of misleading. The widgets are HTML+CSS+JS. They are not some JS-only thing....

[kotke.org]

OK - so contro versy aside about ripping off Konfabulator - Apple's Dashboard brings to light some really interesting notions of pluggable modules. It's an idea who's time has come.

That's always what I wanted Macromedia's product line to look like. If you can imagine a word processor, speadsheet and contact list all working together - from different vendors - yes - that's what Longhorn will enable.

Microsoft has (for years) been evolving and grokking how this should work. Outlook now uses the Word text editor. Spell checking, browsing and messaging are ubiquitous OS features.

But they gotta open it up for us all to use. That's what was wrong with OLE.

I hate to say this - but I predict that within one year they'll be open standards for interconnecting modules together - sort of inter-module APIs - to flow micro-content, communication and 'activity based' computing.

But generalizing a combination of tasks and interaction as "activities" - we'll be able to reduce everything to APIs and schemas. This is ONE of teh big innovations perculating up from the blogosphere, DLAs (digital lfiestyle aggregators) and open source movement.

Saturn hard drive kits take modular
approach
02/05/2005 09:19 PM
Addonics Technologies on Thursday introduced its new line of Saturn Hard Drive Enclosure kits, which enable users to connect SATA hard drives to a computer via a USB, FireWire, CardBus/PCMCIA, SATA or IDE interface. The kits' components can be mixed or matched to meet specific needs, with 3.5-inch, 2.5-inch and 1.8-inch drives fitting inside the same enclosure. Users can employ the kit to create an external hard drive, a hot-swappable internal drive that operates as a cartridge or as a standard internal drive. Each kit comes with the necessary components for the required storage solution, and other components can be added later as needed. Prices start at US$74.50 and Addonics says that the kits "can be installed in systems with practically any operating system, depending on the type of interface connection."

Stress Testing: Using Modular Stress
Test to Test Platforms and Components
12/18/2003 12:58 AM
Modular Stress is a flexible system that performs several different types of stress testing. It is based on a set of test modules that each target individual features or components in a platform. The CETK includes a number of operating system (OS) stress modules that target major system components (for example, GWES, FileSys, Kernel, and so on). In addition, the user can create custom modules to target other platform components. The Modular Stress Test harness controls how these tests are run, that is, the sort of test environment that is desired, and collects data on system health throughout the course of a stress run.

Aiptek PocketDV 4500 07/16/2004 10:08 AM

aiptek_4100.jpg imageIt's probably not going to give you the same sort of visual fidelity of a nicer camera, but for $230 the new AIPTEK PocketDV 4100 looks like a fun diversion, with a 4-megapixel sensor and a 1.8-inch color LCD screen. Keep in mind that the 4100 doesn't use tapes. Instead, it has a Compact Flash slot that supports, well, as much Compact Flash as you can afford. I suspect that the 4-megapixel sensor is actually 4-megapixel this time, instead of the 2-megapixel CCD that's in the SD-card-based PocketDV 4500 that is just interpolated up to 4-megapixel. (Thanks, Mike!)
