Verizon Is The Latest To Unveil VoIP

Verizon Is The Latest To Unveil VoIP 07/22/2004 11:33 AM
It seems that every time a major telco or cable company unveils a VoIP offering it gets a ton of press. The latest, of course, is Verizon 's plan for VoIP. Like every other major telco/cable company (with the surprising exception of Cablevi sion), the plan is based on (a) being a bit cheaper than existing telephone service and (b) a bit more expensive than existing independent VoIP players. It's something of a hedge, and it's designed not to completely cannibalize their existing business, while hoping that their brand name either pulls in a premium or that clueless customers won't know they get the same sort of thing from any of the other providers. Also, Verizon looks like they're going to do more bundling packages concerning VoIP, so it gets a bit cheaper if you also get DSL from them. This makes sense, of course, though the combined deal still seems a bit pricey.

Verizon Tries Launching VoIP Offering

Verizon Tries Launching VoIP Offering
Yet Again

Verizon has been offering a VoIP solution called VoiceWing for quite some time now, but it seemed like it was a secret. Despite launchi ng it last summer, Verizon was barely pitching it at all. Also, to make it as unpalatable to customers as possible they priced it much higher than just about any other VoIP provider out there (around $40/month). Basically, it was VoIP from a phone company that really didn't want to cannibalize it's existing telephone business. Of course, anyone who can do the basic math would see that this is a fairly shortsighted plan. Very few would sign up for VoiceWing -- but instead they would go to competitive VoIP offerings from independents or companies like AT&T. No wonder Verizon has been trying to avoid offer ing naked DSL. Without a competitive VoIP offering, it's just likely to drive more users away. Well, it took almost a year, but Verizon is now relaunchi ng VoiceWing with much more competitive prices. They're still not on the low side, but they're basically the same as AT&T's CallVantage offering. So, now that they're finally ready to really offer VoIP, rather than just pretend they are, does it mean they'll get around to their promised naked DSL offering?
