Tokyo-based Tunewear on Wednesday announced four new accessories for use with the iPod or iPod mini: Prie Hook cases, Poptune removable wrappers, Waterwear water-resistant cases and aluminum clips for the company's Icewear mini cases. Prie Hook, which will ship in mid-January for US$54, features a large metal hook that you can use to attach the leather case to a belt loop or other spot. A flap at the bottom opens for charging the MP3 player in a dock; slots at the top and bottom allow access to all the ports. It's available in two models, one that fits all 4G iPods -- including the iPod photo -- and one that fits the iPod mini; the hook on the latter doesn't swivel 360 degrees, however.

Either the Mini isn't supported any longer, or, more likely, someone within BMW's marketing department didn't want to dillute the Beemer brand with their low-end cousin. Whichever -- it's still been removed from the site.

The AirClick Remote is different from most iPod remote controls because it works using Radio Frequency (RF) technology instead of infrared, so it doesn't require a line of sight to the iPod and can operate up to 60 feet away, according to Griffin. It's shipping now for US$39.99.

Win an iPod mini at the South Beach iPod Garage Party

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new iPod mini in your pocket?

Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep, it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

08/13/2004 07:17 AM
Griffin Technology has introduced RoadTrip, a 3-in-1 device that provides an FM transmitter, charger and cradle for all dock-capable iPod and iPod mini MP3 players. The transmitter broadcasts your music on any FM frequency on your car stereo, with a backlit display that shows which frequency is in use, while the charger keeps your iPod's battery at full capacity. The RoadTrip plugs into any 12-volt outlet or cigarette lighter in your car and its transmitter unit can be removed and plugged into a USB port on your computer, enabling music broadcast from it to any nearby FM stereo. Griffin has left the top of the US$79.99 device open for use with other iPod accessories, which means RoadTrip isn't compatible with the 1G and 2G iPods that have FireWire ports on top.

06/21/2004 01:46 PM
SendStation Systems and RadTech have released two new PocketDock models and MiniSleevz for iPod mini, respectively. SendStation's PocketDock is an adapter that allows users to connect their iPods to their Macs with standard FireWire cables instead of Apple's docking cables. The company's new PocketDock Combo (US$22.95) contains USB and FireWire ports that accept standard USB cables as well as 6-pin FireWire cables. The PocketDo ck Line Out ($29.95) also features a 6-pin FireWire port but adds a 3.5mm (1/8-inch) stereo jack that bypasses the iPod's headphones amplifier for better sound quality when connecting the MP3 player to external speakers. It comes with two six-foot white audio cables. Both PocketDock models are available now and are compatible with Apple's 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40GB iPods, as well as the iPod mini.

i930_ebay.jpg imageSomeone is pre-selling a Motorola i930 Windows Smartphone -- the as-yet unreleased clamshell for Nextel -- on eBay, but there's a catch. The auction isn't for a leaked prototype or anything like that, but instead just the promise of being the first to get one when they hit the street in the fourth quarter of this year. Unfortunately, the auction is just parroting the standard ad copy we've seen floating around for the i930, and doesn't clarify if the i930 is still running the old and rusty Windows Smartphone 2002. FCC Gives Nextel Spectrum Shuffle

FCC Gives Nextel Spectrum Shuffle
Approval, But Does Nextel Approve?
07/08/2004 05:39 PM
Reuters reports that the FCC commissioners voted 5-0 in favor of what sounded like a Nextel plan to reorganize an ugly band: Nextel owns tiny slices of a very ugly chopped up range in the 700 and 800 MHz, and their proposal was to reorganize it so that the public-safety purposes to which other slices are put can be consolidated and provided with more reliability. For their part, Nextel would receive a contiguous range in the 1.9 GHz band, and be less likely to cause interference in public-safety bands--which many blame not on Nextel but on the equipment used for fire, police, and emergencies--and have an easier time in providing cellular coverage at those higher frequencies. The FCC values the deal at $4.8 billion, but will give Nextel credit for $1.6 billion in returning the lower-band frequencies. Nextel has to put up a line of credit for $2.5 billion to cover relocation costs, which are allowed to exceed that amount. If Nextel's final bill is less than $3.2 billion, they have to pay the government the difference. Nextel's response was muted; they had wanted to pay $1.36 billion. Other cellular operators were complaining that the deal gave Nextel too much; it looks like the FCC chose this approach to make it worthwhile to public safety without letting Nextel off the hook....

Dashboard cig lighters are the new

Dashboard cig lighters are the new
cup-holders
11/06/2003 11:11 AM
The automotive cig lighter has become a kind of lingua-franca for chargers of all descriptions -- this CNN piece calls it "the new cup-holder." The same thing is happening in USB: I charge virtually all of my devices (phones, PDA, etc) with retractable ZipLinq USB cables these days -- sure makes travelling easier.
In model-year 2004, there are 47 vehicles that come, standard, with five or six lighter sockets, according to Carsdirect.com. In 1998, no vehicles came with that many...

The Pink Pussycat Boutique, an "adult novelty" store in Manhattan, sells a variety of devices that can be plugged into car cigarette lighter sockets. We'll go no farther.

If you get a flat tire, Safetycentral.com sells a 12-volt impact wrench for removing lug nuts. Among other car lighter-friendly devices the site sells are a 20 oz. coffee pot, a frying pan, an oven, a curling iron, an electric cooler and a special adapter so you can plug multiple devices into one lighter. That way you can make breakfast, curl your hair, run your impact wrench and maybe light a cigarette while you wait for your beer to get cold.

Nextel Still Experimenting

Nextel Still Experimenting 04/26/2004 12:59 PM
Despite a trial and now commercial service of a broadband wireless offering in North Carolina, Nextel is reportedly still examining other technologies: Mobile Pipeline reports unnamed sources who say that Nextel is evaluating gear from IPWireless, though not in any public trials. While it's interesting to note a vendor by name, it's not big news that Nextel is looking at other equipment in addition to Flarion. The company has been fairly open about its interest in a variety of different technologies, ranging from CDMA-based networks to proprietary gear from Flarion. I've talked to a few analysts who say that Nextel is very seriously considering WiMax. IPWireless was once often mentioned by the 802.20 crowd as an active follower but recently seems to have jumped ship to the WiMax world....
