Someone submitted a note to Techdirt Tuesday afternoon noting that their Gmail account usage bar at the bottom of the page showed the limit to be 1000000 MB (approximately 1 terabyte) rather than the advertised 1 gigabyte (though, actually that reminds me of an annoying aside: Google keeps claiming 1 gigabyte of storage, but 1 gigabyte is actually 1024 MB and not the 1000 MB they show, which even Google will tell you). I checked my own Gmail account, and indeed, it showed the approaching terabyte level of storage. A quick note to a friend at Google confirmed the obvious: it was a mistake. However, that hasn't stopped rampant speculation to run around the internet - to the point that even News.com(.com) has written an article about it. Also, one juicy rumor about the fix: before they fix this error, they're making sure that no one actually has gone over the gigabyte storage level.

Applying my unique math skills (i.e., I've never done a calculation correctly), I think that works out to $511.91 for a terabyte of storage. Optware Corp., the developer of Collinear Holographic* Data Storage System, announced today that it had achieved successfully world's first recording and play back of digital movies on a holographic recording disc with a reflective layer using Optware's revolutionary Collinear Holography. This is a major milestone for commercializing holographic data storage system.

The recorded movies were played back in a series of meetings from July eight through 12 with Optware's six existing investors as well as eight enterprises both domestic and overseas including leading manufacturers of electronic and electric products for consumer, business and industrial use. Company names are not disclosed.

Aaah, you guys are killing me. The new µcard format can reach sizes of UP TO TWO TERABYTES, yes, I know. What you all seem to be missing is that it ISN'T A TWO TERABYTE CARD YET. Nobody knows what sizes they will release first, but I bet you all eight million ass coins that they will be available in the standard 512MB and 1GB versions like everything else. Maybe they'll get showy and launch with a TWO GIGABYTE card. But I promise you - swear to you on the grave of our rotting savior - there will be NO TWO TERABYTE MEMORY CARD NEXT YEAR.

And as I said in my first story, even Sony's current Memory Stick Duo and Pro formats support sizes up to two terabytes, but that doesn't mean you can go down to the Recockulous Memory Store and pick up a 2TB card. The real news of the µcard format is that it has a fast transfer speed. But that's it! That's all there is! No two terabyte cards! Stop asking!

While they're promoting it with Maxtor, there's nothing stopping you from using Linksys's new Network Storage Link (NSLU2) with any external USB hard drive to turn it into a network storage device (not unlike the Mirra or other backup units). Storage Link even provides passworded web-access to files and multiple users (although they don't get into the details of how multi-user sharing will work). Since the Storage Link works via RJ-45 (regular ol' Ethernet), there's nothing preventing you from attaching it to a wireless router and using it over WiFi, either (albeit at lower speeds than a wired network, of course). Even better, it sounds like you can continue to add additional USB hard drives to the device to increase storage as you go along. Not bad for $100.
