Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?

Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
01/17/2004 10:47 PM
The big discussion that I've been having with a few different people over the last few weeks is whether or not Google would get into the email business - and, if so, how? To me, it seems like an obvious extension of their technology and business model - but not everyone agrees. However, the rumors are getting louder and louder that Google is developing an email product. The question is whether they'll be offering an entire "Google Email" system, or if they're just working on a version of their AdSense offering that would work within email (generating contextual ads based on the content of the email). Some people I've spoken to about it thought that people would freak out if they thought Google was reading their email to do its contextualization magic - which could be true. The question is how many people will freak out - and will plenty of others be more than willing to welcome the Google contextualization engine into their inbox, in exchange for the ability to actually "Google your email"? Many people always seem to want the ability to better search through their own email. I could see a certain willingness from many people to let Google place ads in their email in exchange for the ability to better search through all the email. If Google could figure out a good anti-spam solution, as well, it could be a real hit.

Photo Sharing Company

Well, it's not quite as big a deal as Yahoo buying Oddpost, but Google has now bought photo-sharing company Picasa, which was already a Blogger partner. It's not a huge surprise to see Google expanding their offerings in more of the portal direction. The only question, of course, is how many spare Gmail gigs are going to be offered for people storing photos. Also, will people now complain that Google is scanning your personal photos in order to put up relevant advertising?

company Myrio
04/08/2005 10:07 AM
German electronics giant Siemens has reached an agreement to acquire U.S. software company Myrio, which specializes in technology for providing TV service over the Net. Myrio provides middleware and applications for emerging IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) services that use the Internet -- and not broadcast towers or satellites -- to deliver video into consumers' homes. The acquisition will help strengthen Siemens' portfolio of so-called "triple-play" voice, data, and video technologies aimed at network operators, ISPs, and cable companies. Numerous players in the telecoms sector see strong growth potential in providing services such as interactive TV and TV on demand, in addition to telephony and high-speed Internet access. The terms of the deal with the privately held company were not disclosed. Myrio, a 75-person software company, began life as an ISP, formerly called SourceNet. The company later changed its name and focus, moving into the development of software to provide video over IP.

Email Postage Company Says People Want
Email Postage Stamps
04/21/2004 12:54 PM
Is it really any surprise that an email postage company has done a survey saying that p eople want email postage stamps as a way of cutting back spam. In the past, every survey that has asked people about email postage has generally come out the opposite way. However, when you ask the question in a leading way, such as: "Is it a good idea to shift the cost of e-mail from the ISPs to those who send mass e-mail?" who's actually going to say no? Of course, people want to "shift the cost," but that's not the same as saying they want to deal with email postage stamps.

Our Email Is Spam Too

Now We Need A Company To Tell Us When
Our Email Is Spam Too
01/09/2004 09:50 PM
It's really quite impressive how many other businesses spam has generated. There are all the anti-spam companies, and now there's even a company that will monitor if your (one assumes) legitimate email is being called spam. Return Path has a bunch of email accounts at major ISPs and signed up for various spam blocking services. They also monitor all the various blacklists - and will alert you (if you're a big company and you pay them money) if your emails are getting stopped by a spam blocker. They'll also tell you why and make suggestions on how to de-spamify your email. Anyone else think things are getting even more ridiculous when you have to pay a company to make sure your perfectly legitimate email isn't being blocked?
