Boing Boing reader
John Duffell says,
Bobby Fischer, former world chess champion and a wanted man in the
U.S. who's been held by the Japanese government for the past 8 months,
will soon be freed. Fischer has been granted Icelandic citizenship,
prompting the Japanese to allow for his release to Iceland. He's
wanted in the US for breaking international sanctions in 1992 when he
played a chess match in Yugoslavia. Fischer also pissed off a lot of
people on 9/11, when he went on Philippine radio to commend the 9/11
hijackers for the WTC attacks.
Snip: "The former champion has many supporters in Iceland, after
playing a world championship match there in 1972 at the height of the
Cold War, beating the Soviet Union's Boris Spassky. 'Mr Fischer is a
true Icelander now,' Iceland's ambassador to Japan, Thordur Oskarsson,
told Reuters news agency."

article gives a detailed account of the 12th World Computer Chess
Championship which was held last month in Bar-Ilan University

to do.
"During the competition itself we are the computer's robots.
We do what it tells us" says Shay Bushinsky, creator of Deep
Junior, one of
the chess programs. The article also goes over some of the history of
chess-playing machines. Photos of the
event are available on the

Japan, January 18-22, 2005
01/05/2005 03:28 AMIn the aftermath of the tsunamis that devastated Asia in late December
2004, observers pointed out that lack of official, credible
information gave victims and governments in the area little prior
warning of the impending disaster. Although still in the developmental
stages, a partnership of the Global Disaster Information Network
(GDIN) and the Organsation for Economic Cooperation and Development
(OECD) is creating an information system that may significantly reduce
the impact of future natural and manmade disasters. Native American
Pueblo and Navajo Nations in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado
are providing pilot sites for the GDIN system. [PRWEB Jan 5, 2005]

World Robot Declaration Issued by Japan
World Robot Declaration Issued by Japan
03/06/2004 02:03 AMThe International Robot Fair
2004 started off with a "World Robot
Declaration" yesterday. The declaration states three specific
expectations that future robots must meet and declares 5 resolutions
on
what must be done to bring the next generation of robots into
existence.
It puts into words the Simak-like Japanese philosphy towards robots
that we've been aware of in a general sense for years. Basically
robots
will be the companions of the human race and assist humans physically
and psychologically while helping to keep the world safe and peaceful.
The full text of the declaration is included below.
