How to spot a trendy logo

How to spot a trendy logo 01/24/2004 11:31 AM
Interesting piece on current trends in logo design (merging blobs, swooshes, pop-art finneals, the color green, wireframes, etc). Though it strikes me that, given my penchant for dinstinctiveness in logomarks that I would be liekley to use this as a crib-sheet for critiquing the logo-development undertaken by my design-firm: "Dude, a green wireframe swooshy pop-art blob? That is so played-out. I want the new-new." Or, as Ian McDonald put it in his brilliant novel, Out on Blue Six:
So I said, like, whazz new, I mean, like new new, not old new, yuh know, like last-week new, so she said, this yulp in the shop, "This is new," like she said, "Cheez, like everyone, but everyone's going to be wearing one next week," like, whazz a yulp know 'bout fashion? Anyway, I thought, well, maybeez sheez right, so, I got one, so I did like, whadyou think? Isn't it wheeeee! like. Isn't it the most? Meanasay, you not got fashion, you not got nothing!

Can you spot the funny numbers?

Can you spot the funny numbers? 05/07/2004 12:16 PM
This article about SBC CEO Ed Whitacre's plea for telecom deregulation inadvertantly shows how the incumbent telcos manipulate fact to promote their anti-competition agenda:

A study released by the Economic Policy Institute this week reported that the wholesale rules contributed to the loss of 380,000 American jobs--most of which came directly from the telecom industry.

On the other hand, a new study by Decision Economics said this week that reforming telecom regulation would generate $6.8 billion annually for the next five years in capital spending, and lead to the creation of more than 90,000 jobs annually.

So the FCC's wholesale rules cost 380,000 jobs, but fixing those rules would only bring back 90,000 of them?!  Other factors must  have caused all those layoffs.

Beware studies purporting to quantify the economic effects of regulation, especially rules like those in telecom, which have only indirect effects on business decisions.  (As opposed, say, to pollution controls that require specific investments by factories.)

suunto_n6hr.jpg imageSuunto looks to be releasing the n6-HR Microsoft SPOT Watch soon, if the new pre-order list from a Suunto watch dealer is to be believed. Supposed to ship on January 6th, the new $400 watch is designed for the athletic, 401k-monitoring grandfather, with a built-in heart rate monitor, training logbook, and broadcast stock market information and other data broadcasts from the MSN Direct service. And unlike many SPOT watches, it doesn't suffer from tragic industrial design.

SQL Server: The 64-bit Sweet Spot

SQL Server: The 64-bit Sweet Spot 06/28/2004 11:51 AM
Scalability Experts have recently published a great white paper (PDF) that compares SQL Server 2000 running on 32-bit and 64-bit architectures and benchmarks both versions against known loads. The whitepaper uses a Unisys ES7000 mainframe-class server using Itanium 2 processors. The most interesting results were using the 64-bit edition of Analysis Services, where they demonstrated far higher headroom in terms of number of members and partition processing. Some of the most severe limitations of the 32-bit edition will be eradicated when SQL Server 2005 arrives, due to the rearchitecture of much of the OLAP engine, but the enhanced throughput of a 64-bit environment will still have a major effect.

The reappearance of Green Spot

The reappearance of Green Spot 12/17/2004 06:31 PM
When I was a boy, during the summers in Great Barrington, Mass., my mother used to take us to the Green Spot bottling plant in town where Maybe 40 years ago, they shut down the plant and that was the end of Green Spot for us. This afternoon in Singapore, at a food stall in Little India, I drank a can of Green Spot. It's the same oddly-named, non-carbonated orange drink. The can says it was made in Thailand under the authority of Green Spot International. It seems that, somehow, Green Spot left Great Barrington and landed in Asia. Ealy...
