The NYT is reporting that AOL is providing software to customers to block pop-ups. The sheer number of ironies in this article is simply delicious, and renders further comment unnecessary: 1) "AOL pioneered the often annoying but effective pop-up format" 2) "10 percent of its users had chosen not to receive pop-ups from AOL's own service, an option that has been harder to find than the new blocking software." Hard to find? Almost impossible. 3) "the number of sites that will accept pop-ups is increasing, including ever more sites owned by AOL Time Warner like Mapquest and CNN.com."

The Hidden Gem of MT3

The Hidden Gem of MT3 06/29/2004 11:36 PM

Da vid Raynes: SubCategories 1.2: There was much complaining when Movable Type 3.0 came out that there wasn't anything new in it. To a large extent, the complainers were right — there was very little new functionality...on the surface.

The real gem of MT3, it turns out, is the new plug-in architecture. Six Apart is very smart — why write a ton of new features when you can just polish up your API, then have your customers write the features for you?

Consider the above link — parent-child categories for MT, something that people have been requesting ever since I've been using the product. David Raynes wrote a feature-complete, polished system for the MT3 architecture. Six Apart didn't have to lift a finger.

I have a feeling that we're on the verge of a tidal wave of MT functionality. We're going to see things that we never even dreamed of six months ago, and then we're all going to say, "so that's what they had in mind when they released MT3 with no new features..."

Hidden Tribeca 04/09/2004 04:06 PM

Neat stuff today over at MUG with Tribeca Pentimento. This essay highlights what I love about living in old cities, the hidden (and sometimes not so hidden) history that's everywhere. Working in Tribeca I know these spots and wish it were a sunny day for exploring the neighborhood rather than a cold rainy day for coding.

A NewsFactor.com article claims that because of "hidden costs" like Mac users paying $129 for every major release of the Mac operating system, owning a Macintosh is more expensive than owning a Windows machine. In addition to operating system upgrades, the article also suggests that the Mac's minority market share makes full compatibility with the Windows world more expensive, and cites MS Office as a key example.
