Stealth Overclocking

Stealth Overclocking 04/12/2005 01:05 PM

There's an awful lot of overclocking out there: The Windows team at Microsoft was getting some bizarre crash reports. They followed up on 10 of them, and found that five people had intentionally overclocked their system. As for the rest:

The other half said, "What's overclocking?" He called them and walked them through some configuration information and was able to conclude that they were indeed all overclocked. But these people were not overclocking on purpose. The computer was already overclocked when they bought it. These "stealth overclocked" computers came from small, independent "Bob's Computer Store"-type shops, not from one of the major computer manufacturers or retailers.

So are these shops buying slower processings, then overclocking them and selling them as CPUs of the actual speed they've been overclocked to? Sneaky. Sleazy.

The article looks convincing enough, but I'm not willing to test it. This how-to details how to overclock a Mac mini to 1.58GHz but the nearly microscopic jumpers make this soldering challenge a bit too daunting for a humble graphics geek like me...then again, the Mac mini is so cheap, it's almost disposable. Let us know if any of you were brave enough to attempt this feat.

Overclocking is easy if you have the right equipment to start with. It can cost nothing if your temps are ok. Its a quick, cheap and easy way to get more out of your PC.

From our friends at Engadget, and here.
Overclock your Mac mini to as much as 1.58GHz

854.jpg

So you’re feeling lucky with that new Mac mini of yours, are you? But lucky enough to pop off a couple soldered jumpers on the motherboard in order to get an extra couple hundred MHz out of the thing? Oh really? And what if the chip doesn’t take the overclock, and runs unstable, as they often do? (You might not know this, but overclocking is more of a PC thing.) Well, step right up then, Mac mini enthusiasts have sorted out how to get 1.5 and 1.58GHz out of your cute little new box—whether it wants to or not. We can’t wait for the water cooling mods.

OK, Who's Overclocking The Earth?

OK, Who's Overclocking The Earth? 12/31/2003 01:14 PM
Remember back in 1999 when people started talking about "internet time", which was this crazy notion that, thanks to the internet, the usual course of business went much much much faster? Well, it sounds like the Earth tried to get in on some of that, as it's now been revealed that since 1999, our home planet has been making it's annual trek around the sun one second faster than it was for quite some time. Between 1972 and 1999, we had to add a special "leap second" each year, since the Earth was slowing down, and losing a step. However, since 1999, for reasons no one is quite sure, the Earth appears to have caught a second wind and is speeding up a bit.

PHP: date_sunrise - Manual: I don't know how closely you all are looking at the PHP 5 function libraries, but I stumbled on this function today (and its sibling).

date_sunset() returns the sunset time for a given day (specified as a timestamp) and location. The latitude, longitude and zenith parameters default to the date.default_latitude, date.default_longitude and date.sunset_zenith configuration options, respectively.

The latitude defaults to North. So, if you want to specify a South value, you must pass a negative value. The same note applies to longitude, which defaults to East.

I love PHP, but I really wonder about things like this. We've talked before about some problems with the language (especially compared to Perl), like inconsistent function naming, and — as this function perhaps demonstrates — having too many functions in the core.

Isn't this something that PEAR could have handled? Does this need to be built into the core? What percentage of PHP programmers have a need for this?
