Xbox in Japan: Microsoft offers verdict 04/19/2004 11:03 AM
Microsoft's Group Senior Manager for the Xbox in Japan, Masahiro Koide, has been discussing the success of the Xbox console in that territory with the US press. The Xbox has sold 400,000 units in the territory since its launch in February 2002 - the same figure that Koide says Grand Theft Auto has sold in Japan, as well as the 3DO console that launched there back in the nineties. Koide's point is obviously that no matter how worthy of success the object, Western products will always have trouble convincing Japanese punters.

Microsoft Wins $4 Million From Spammer

Microsoft Wins $4 Million From Spammer 07/15/2004 08:36 PM
Microsoft has apparently won a $4 million judgment against a spammer. The interesting part, though, is that the legal issue wasn't the spamming, but "trademark infringement, false advertising and cybersquatting." The spam in question apparently advertised a toolbar that claimed to keep Microsoft Windows updated. The article doesn't say what kind of spyware the product actually was (but, you have to assume it was spyware). Though, it may be difficult to collect, Microsoft claims that it's already taken in approximately $54 million from the various spam cases it's been winning. While that's pocket change for Microsoft, that's still a pretty good chunk of change. Maybe there's a business model in really suing spammers after all.

Finance Spam Passing Drug Spam While
Porn Spam Is Washed Up
05/24/2004 05:37 PM
The latest study on spam trends appears to show that financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam - though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to slow down the amount of spam sent.
