Will Eisner Dies at age 86
The father of the modern Graphic Novel and hugely influential comics
figure has died today from heart surgery complications. His concept
of
Sequential Art helped move comics out of
the idea of being solely "kid's stuff" and was seen as a
cannon in the comic art world.
He was working on a book called "The Plot" due out later
this year. He will be missed. More info and Eisner Bio at

remarks as they're spoken:
He was asked if he regretted not distributing Fahrenheit 9/11. He said
no. Disney is not partisan and the movie was clearly political. Disney
is an entertainment company. He said Rupert Murdoch said no for a
completely different reason. Murdoch said he hated Moore and liked
Bush. That's not why Disney didn't distribute the film.
When asked whether he liked the movie, Eisner said he loved it. It was
like going to a rock concert. It was entertaining, hilarious. He loved
it in a non-political way.

Cory Doctorow:
Michael Eisner has announced that he's quitting as CEO of Disney when
his contract runs out in 2006.
Eisner recently told Walt Disney directors that company president
Robert Iger would be a good successor, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Iger, whose contract expires in September 2005, has recently met with
investors and executives and told the Times he would like the top job.

Who would hire Michael Eisner?
Who would hire Michael Eisner?
03/08/2004 11:03 PMIn this
interesting New York Times editorial, Nicholas Kristof looks at
CEO pay from the perspective of "what would this guy do if we didn't
pay him $200 million per year?" (the $200 million/year is what
Michael Eisner earned during some of his better years at Disney
(oftentimes those were bad years for stockholders and employees but
that's another story)). Kristof points out that
"There is a huge supply of would-be C.E.O.'s and negligible demand
from companies for new ones, so their price should be cheap — if
boards would use their leverage. When Jack Welch retired, General
Electric held a contest among three underlings to succeed him. Each
was desperate to get the job. If G.E. had done its usual tough
bargaining, it could have signed Jeffrey Immelt on a 15-year contract
for a mere $750,000 a year in salary, plus reasonable incentives for
long-term success.
"Except for turnaround experts, C.E.O.'s have few transferable
skills and are in little demand elsewhere. The average 63-year-old
head of a plastics company has almost zero chance of finding a better
job elsewhere. One study found that of 77 cases when a major company
had to find a new boss, only twice was this because the C.E.O. had
left for another corporate job.
"Think about it. If Mr. Eisner, who turns 62 on Sunday, wanted to
switch jobs now, what other public company would hire him as its new
chief executive? Frankly, Mr. Eisner is so desperate to hold on to his
job that Disney should try to charge him for the privilege of
remaining in his post."
Eisner has transferred at least $1 billion from Disney's
shareholders' pockets into his personal checking account over the
years. So he probably could afford to pay quite a bit to keep
his job!

06/03/2004 12:24 PMPixar's public announcement that it won't be working with Disney after
the end of its current distribution deal hasn't stopped Disney CEO
Michael Eisner from holding out hope that the two studios can broker
some sort of arrangement. "I will not believe it is over until it is
over," he said to investors during a recent Webcast conference,
according to
Forbes. In late January,
Pixar
announced that it had ended efforts to extend its seven-picture
distribution deal with Disney, which will expire after the companies
release "The Incredibles" and "Cars." In announcing the end of the
effort, Pixar CEO Steve Jobs said it was "a shame that Disney won't be
participating in Pixar's future successes."

[Turner] "The invasion of Iraq was the biggest debacle in the history
of the world... except maybe the AOL Time-Warner merger. The AOL
Time-Warner merger was bullshit.
[Moderator] You were quoted as saying that signing was as good as
having sex for the first time.
[Turner] I was just being a team player. It wasn't really. It was the
stupidest move I've ever seen. Almost as stupid as the war on Iraq...
Gerald Levine was like Rasputin. He was my enemy. But he said he was
my best friend. I said to him, "Gerald, I've never been to your home."
But I was a team player. I always pulled for the team. We split the
money with Jim Baker 50/50. We used to open the envelopes together as
they came in because we didn't trust each other."
[Moderator] Can you start a new empire from now?
[Moderator] No. I'm too old/tired. I'm doing bison... they are the
original American cattle.

Roy Disney resigns from Disney, slams
Eisner
12/02/2003 01:43 AMRoy Disney has resigned from the Disney Board of Directors, and has
sent a scathing email to Michael Eisner explaining, in exorciating
detail, exactly why he's leaving the company his uncle founded.
1. The failure to bring back ABC Prime Time from the ratings abyss
it
has been in for years and your inability to program successfully the
ABC
Family Channel. Both of these failures have had, and I believe will
continue
to have, significant adverse impact on shareholder value.
2. Your consistent micro-management of everyone around you with
the
resulting loss of morale throughout the Company.
3. The timidity of your investments in our theme park business. At
Disney's California Adventure, Paris and now in Hong Kong, you have
tried to
build parks "on the cheap" and they show it and the attendance figures
reflect it.
