You stink, therefore I am.
Philosophers and psychologists have been
studying the
science of
disgust
a>, and its proper place in the law. Leon Kass, the chairman of the
president's council on
bioethics, cites
"the wisdom of
repugnance" in arguing against cloning. More recently,
Martha Nussbaum
has written a new book,
"Hiding from
Humanity: Disgust, Shame, and the Law," which rejects disgust
as a moral guide. She has also written on the role of disgust in the
mutilations
of women in Gujarat.

and technology in general. They seem to make a large number of movies
in

Free software, for the sake of regional
identity
12/03/2003 08:44 AMNice Bruce Sterling editorial from this month's Wired on the move in
Extremadura, Spain, to develop a local flavor of Linux:
The features may be mundane, but they add up to something quite new: a
patriotic regional operating system. The emailer's logo is a stork,
Extremadura's most beloved bird. The word processor is named after a
famous local poet. The desktop is crammed with hallowed symbols of the
homeland. Extremaduran schoolkids could stand up and pledge allegiance
to this thing...
This deeply rooted regional approach could prove a more nurturing
environment for Tux than either the EU, with its stifling bureaucracy,
or the US, where lawyers for SCO are eager to sue the daylights out of
anyone who dares to propagate the penguin. Right now, most of the
action is in government, where officials are beginning to wake up to
the advantages of open standards and malleable code - and not having
to pay Americans for any of it. India is releasing Linux variations in
local dialects from Assamese to Telugu. China, Japan, and South Korea
are collaborating on their own OS. South Africa recently approved an
open source strategy, and similar things are going on in Argentina,
Australia, Bulgaria, Peru, and Ukraine.

The BBC reports that pedophilia is quite widespread in the UK. Law
enforcement agencies there have taken serious measures to help combat
this ongoing problem through the use of fake child porn websites and a

implemented has a two fold effect on possible pedophiles: 1) They are

Candygram for Dubya
Candygram for Dubya
04/09/2004 04:12 PM
Candy King is very popular
here and is just like Pick-A-Mix
candy back in the US where you can fill a bag with a variety of candy
and pay by weight. While I was staring at the variety of Easter
chocolates today I noticed a bin filled with what I thought at first
glance were candy nipples. Considering that Finland has a soup
commercial running in prime time on TV that features a couple who roll
around in the snow with full frontal nudity that makes the American
furor over Janet's little 'wardrobe malfunction' seem even more
idiotic, I really thought they were supposed to be nipples.
I bought a few and they taste just like strawberry Tangy Taffy which
used to be popular in the 70s. Sadly, Jarkko told me that they're
really supposed to be mushrooms but...c'mon, I'll bet the kids don't
call them mushrooms. :) I'd love to send a giant bag of them to the
White House and to Ashcroft but I wouldn't get the joy of watching the
secret service either freak out over the 'obscene' candy or the
bioterrorism scare from a Finnish anthrax killer nipple attack. :)
Dubya Photo Funnies
Dubya Photo Funnies
08/28/2004 01:39 PMWhat happened was, Lauren was away during the Democratic Convention,
and as a politics junkie, I wanted to watch some of it, so the kid
(just turned five) ended up watching a couple of the big speeches with
me. (All on webcast, our TV is a movie box, doesn’t get any
channels). He’s full of questions so I tried to explain, and as a
result the candidate is the only public figure in the world whose face
he knows, when we’re somewhere that there’s a TV showing news
he’s apt to pipe up “There’s John Kerry.” This is a little
embarrassing, especially considering he’s a Canadian. This morning I
was reading news and made some remark about George Bush and he asked
“who’s he?” so I tried to explain the big picture around the
election and I went looking for some Dubya pix to show him. So I went
to
the bio
page at the official Bush re-election site, and clicked on “View
George W. Bush Photo Gallery”... busted link, a peek inside the
source reveals
href="\News\PhotoAlbum.aspx"... if I were
mean-spirited I’d suggest that something about either being
Republican or using Windows makes you stupid, but seriously, have to
wonder about an organization that claims it can run America not being
clueful enough to use a link-checker. Back to our story... I went to
Google and looked for
pictures of
George Bush. This turns out to be a bad idea; the top-ranked
pictures are by and large, shall we say, not Republican-friendly.
Wanted posters, deranged-monster morphs, things that have just
got
ta be PhotoShopped. “Why are you laughing, Daddy?” said the
kid, and I couldn’t really explain. (PS: Lots of nice pictures of
George over at the White House site if you want ’em).

Xeni Jardin:
Following up on
yesterday's post about an apparent bit of political humor on the
Harvard Primate Neuroscience Lab's website, one BoingBoing reader
wrote in to tell us that a relative worked at the lab -- and confirmed
that indeed, the chimp-to-Dubya morph was no accident. Also,
BoingBoing reader
Chris
Holland says:
That "image" at the top-right corner actually is a scaled-down display
of a bigger quicktime movie ... for a more dramatic effect. Now if I
could only dig out that morphing I did when I was a kid of Claudia
Schiffer and Cindy Crawford.

Saying fuck off
Saying fuck off
06/26/2004 04:09 PMOK, so I wait for a taxi on the Tampere railway station for about 20
minutes today - and I am soaking wet, tired, hangoverish, and in
general pissed off at a multitude of things. The last thing I want to
hear is some misogynous, racist taxi driver start giving me shit how
the women drivers are evil, and why all gypsies are all fucked.
The last time I was so offended in a short period of time was a taxi
driver in Melbourne, who started our conversation with "You know
evolution is wrong, don't you? It just can't work! God must be
behind all this!" (Hint: it's not a good line to try on an
atheist engineer.)
Sometimes, it's good to talk to people. But I'm starting to think
that the generic Finnish habit of not talking to people is actually a
really good idea. Saves a lot of grief.

The European Space Agency's Huygens probe successfully
detached from NASA's
Cassini
orbiter today to begin a three-week journey to Saturn's moon
Titan. NASA's
Deep Space Network
tracking stations in Madrid, Spain, and Goldstone, Calif., received
the signal at 7:24 p.m. (PST). All systems performed as expected and
there were no problems reported with the Cassini spacecraft. There was
a
very real probability it would have never have happened if it
weren't for the persistence of a
swedish engineer.
