As search aficionados, we have watched recent changes in
the search industry with great interest. Yahoo! launched its own
search algorithm in February 2004. MSN previewed its proprietary
search algorithm in July 2004, and is expected to roll it out soon.
That will give Internet searchers a choice of four different major
search algorithms (Ask Jeeves, Google, MSN, and Yahoo). It also made
us wonder: how different are the search engines, and is one any better
than the others? They created jux2 as a comparative research tool to
answer these questions. Using jux2, theylearned that search engines
are more different than people think, typically sharing fewer than 3.5
of their top 10 results (see the other statistical data). They also
found that a comparative tool like jux2 gives users far more control
over their searches and, in many cases, better search results than
from any single search engine. Their hope is that the community of
advanced search users finds jux2 an interesting and useful tool. This
has been added to the search engine section of

metaphorically -- a little animated puppy appears on screen to
indicate your query's status by wagging its tail, panting, scratching
itself and other actions.
If only Microsoft's programmers had put such effort into the rest of
this software! Its searches run painfully slowly and routinely yield
masses of unrelated files.
A gaggle of contenders has recently put forth replacements for
Microsoft's search. Some are popular Web portals -- Ask Jeeves, Google
and Yahoo. Some are small, obscure developers -- Copernic and Blinkx.
One's a division of Microsoft itself, its MSN Internet service.

Google To Launch Desktop Search Tool
Google To Launch Desktop Search Tool
05/19/2004 02:57 AMI assume this will surprise all of about three or four people who
haven't been paying attention, but Google is preparing to
laun
ch a desktop search tool that will let you search through your own
hard drive (in exchange, I assume, for contextual ads). The press
will make a big deal about this and how it's a way for them to
challenge Microsoft's Longhorn offering, which will have greatly
improved local search. I'm not sure it's that interesting. Longhorn
is so far off that it's really not worth speculating whether or not
this product actually competes with it or not. The more interesting
question is,
if this local search tool involves contextual ads,
will the privacy folks start complaining again that Google is now
snooping through your hard drive?

12/24/2004 12:28 PMNew Search Tool Targets Handwritten Documents
http://www.umass.edu/umhome/news/articles/7683.php
Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have developed
a "first-of-its-kind" document retrieval system that is able to
"memorize" keywords in handwritten manuscripts. Computer scientist R.
Manmatha says, "Right now, searching a scanned handwritten document is
very hard to do. Scanned historical documents are basically images, or
pictures, and currently can only be searched if someone manually
transcribes the documents or creates an index of their contents. This
is time consuming and expensive to do. Given the cost, most
handwritten documents are never transcribed or indexed. But there is
an enormous amount of handwritten, historical material." Manmatha and
his associates have created a demonstration of their search tool using
1,000 pages of George Washington's papers, which can be searched by
typing in a common keyword such as "Virginia." According to research
assistant Toni Rath, "The basic idea is analogous to searching text
documents in one language, say French, using queries in another
language, say English. This is usually done by learning models from
documents written in both languages. By analogy, our system learns
from a parallel body of transcribed scanned images. That is, the word
images form a 'visual language' and the transcriptions are in
English."

Visual search tool Grokker 2.1 ships for
OS X
06/30/2004 05:33 PMGroxis Inc. announced on Wednesday that
Grokker
2.1, the company's visual search tool, is now compatible with Mac
OS X. The software was previously available as a Beta release for the
operating system. Grokker uses its four plug-ins -- The Web (covering
the AltaVista, MSN, WiseNut, Yahoo! and Teoma search engines),
Amazon.com, Google and My Files -- to produce visual maps of the data
you're looking for, whether it's on the Internet or on your hard
drive. It features a fully functional Web browser and allows you to
build, edit and save visual maps containing up to 2,000 items in each.
Version 2.1 builds maps faster, adds the Google plug-in, highlights
query keywords in different colors and more. It requires Mac OS X
v10.2.2, a G3 processor, 256MB RAM, 20MB free hard drive space, Java
1.4.1 and Safari 1.0. A 30-day trial is available from the Groxis Web
site, and a license is US$49.
