How to Survive a Zombie Attack

How to Survive a Zombie Attack 04/19/2005 03:40 AM
I finally saw Dawn of the Dead (2004), and I just have to wonder, did these people even think about how they would survive a zombie attack? Since we've had a rash of zombie movies lately - 28 Day, Shaun of the Dead - I think someone needs to publish a zombie survival guide to help these people out. And that someone is me, because I for one don't welcome our new zombie overlords.

Zombie Network Pricing

Zombie Network Pricing 09/08/2004 08:51 AM

Going price for network of zombie PCs: $2,000-$3,000: Here's a look into the economics of spam hackers.

One indication of the going rate for zombie PCs comes from a June 11 posting on SpecialHam.com, an electronic forum for spammers. The asking price for use of a network of 20,000 zombie PCs: $2,000 to $3,000. Such networks typically are used to broadcast spam and phishing scams and to spread e-mail viruses designed mainly to create yet more zombies.

ISP Telenor cripples zombie PC network 09/10/2004 11:16 AM
Authorities in Singapore shut down a large network of around 10,000 robot, or "zombie," computers this week, after technicians at Norwegian Internet service provider (ISP) Telenor ASA stumbled on the illicit network by tracing Internet Relay Chat (IRC) communications from compromised customer PCs on its system.

Verizon Builds Broadband Wireless
Network
08/27/2004 01:30 PM
Verizon Avenue launched a broadband wireless trial in Grundy, Va.: The network uses products from Alvarion that may be migrated to WiMax. Even though this is a small network in a rural community, it's a major coup for Alvarion and WiMax. Broadband wireless has largely been used by small startups or ISPs. A major operator like Verizon offers a significant stamp of approval, even if this is only a small trial aimed at learning more about the technology. This news also shows how much legitimacy a big name like Intel can add to a new technology. Realistically, broadband wireless technology that has been available for years could have worked just fine to serve this small community. But it took the buzz and marketing muscle around WiMax to attract the attention of a big player like Verizon....

Is Hello Kitty a Copycat?

Is Hello Kitty a Copycat? 09/12/2004 11:51 PM
Xeni Jardin: A blogger who describes himself as an "extraordinary ordinary guy in Japan" says this on the 30th anniversary of Hello Kitty:
"Kitty's design was just a crib from ... Musti, created by the Belgian animator/director Ray Goossens (1924-1998) [Ed note: she's the center figure in the BoingBoing graphic at left]. Musti was started as an animation series on TV in 1968, and its picture books were also published. I read some of that books and loved it in my childhood. Although it is evident to everybody that Kitty was an imitation of Musti, Sanrio, the publisher of Hello Kitty have not touched on it. It is said that the total copyright fee for Hello Kitty reaches around 15 billion yen (13.7 million USD) per year, and Sanrio got 23.7 billion yen (21.6 million USD) gross sales in second quarter of 2004. I wonder why they don't feel shady about hiding the fact."
I'm no Hello Kitty historian, and that's news to me. Is it true? Link to post. This guy has a cool blog. His post about Japanese "jinxes" was also interesting.

On a related note, don't miss the image of "Hello Kitty De Milo" in this news story, which is, like, so obviously a total ripoff of some Greek art dude. Link (Thanks, Brian)

Update: OMG! This is turning into one big plushy piracy clusterfuck! BoingBoing reader Eva says, "See my response on Hello Kitty vs Musti here. Basically, I think Musti is in turn a rip off of the Dutch rabbit Miffy, which was published more than a decade before Musti." Link

Regardless of whatever happens with MT 3.x's license, code, or fortune cookies, there's no way in hell I'm switching from the MT2.661 setup I have now if there's no blacklist equivalent for it) Dunno whether they're generic web proxies, or blog-spam-specific things. Zombie Networks for Rent

Zombie Networks for Rent 07/07/2004 04:31 PM

Home PCs rented out in sabotage racket: This is just hideous. Now they have "zombie brokers" that will rent you a zombie network they've created.

Vast networks of home computers are being rented out without their owners' knowledge to spammers, fraudsters and digital saboteurs, security experts say.

The terminals have been infected by a computer virus, turning them into "zombies" — slaves to the commands of a malicious and unseen controller.

For more information on what they're doing with these machines, see this post.
