Differences between WorldCon and DNC

Differences between WorldCon and DNC

Differences between WorldCon and DNC 07/16/2004 05:17 AM

This year's World Science Fiction Convention is in Boston, and accordingly, the URL for the con is boston2004.com. By a funny coincidence, the Democratic National Convention is also in Boston, and its URL is boston04.com. The inevitable confusion is quite humorous -- the organisers of the WorldCon have compiled a list of ways in which the WorldCon is unlike the DNC:

# We're not $10 million over budget. We don't even have a $10 million budget.
# Our promises for the future are supposed to be fiction.
# You don't have to donate thousands of dollars to us (though we wouldn't complain)—we'll give you a high-level appointment to work for us for free!
# The media will not outnumber the attendees.
# Thoats and banthas are more interesting animals than donkeys and elephants.
# The folks wandering around with walkie-talkies are likely to be helpful and friendly.
# The slogans on our buttons are actually funny, and many of them are about cats.
# No one will be kissing babies except their immediate families and friends.
# When we talk about "skull and bones" it's probably in a discussion about paleontology.
# When we sling mud, it's probably in a workshop on making alien pottery.

Differences in meaning of finger
chopping in Korea and Japan

Differences in meaning of finger
chopping in Korea and Japan
06/05/2005 11:34 PM

I wrote earlier about the origin of the Japanese the ritual of chopping off pinkies. In Japan, the ritual comes the importance of the left pinkie in the grip of a Japanese sword. Removing the left pinkie is literally disarming and was used to punish people in the past. This has been ritualized and continues to be used by small number of Yakuza and others in Japan as a form of punishment or taking responsibility.

This is why I didn't understand why the Koreans were severing their fingers in protests against the Japanese. Two Koreans chopped their little fingers off in in front of the Japanese embassy in March to protest Japanese comments about the Dokdo islands and in 2001, 20 Koreans chopped their off their little fingers in protest against Koizumi's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine.

I was beginning to understand the issues that the Koreans were protesting against, but I didn't see how this finger chopping was involved. I decided to get to the bottom of this and asked friends during my trip to Korea.

Although it is an ancient custom, if I understand correctly, one of the most famous incidents was An Jung-geun, a legendary leader in the armed resistance against the Japanese occupation, chopping off parts of several of his fingers and writing "Korean Independence" in blood on the Korean national flag. Later he assassinated Japanese politician Hirobumi Ito in 1910. Hirobumi Ito was a key figure in the Meiji Restoration of Japan, former prime minister and former Resident -General of Korea. Using the blood from severed fingers to write such statements became a sign of solidarity in the resistance against the Japanese and I believe the recent finger chopping is a continuation of this.

I am not trying to make a statement about or a judgement on the anti-Japanese protests or the actions by the Japanese, but trying to clarify something that was confusing for me.

PS I found this article about the protests that ran in today's Korea Herald insightful on the relevance of these protests.

UPDATE: Edited post to reflect comments that An Jung-geun chopped his fingers before the assassination and that it's an ancient custom which didn't start with An Jung-geun.

Academic Use of Digital Resources: Disciplinary Differences and the Issue of Progression by Chris Jones, Maria Zenios and Jill Griffiths
http://www.shef.ac.uk/nlc2004/Proceedings/Symposia/Symp osium9/Jones_et_al.htm

ABSTRACT
This paper examines the use of digital resources by academics in UK Higher education. The explosive growth of the Internet and in particular the Web has led to a growth in speculation about networked and e-learning (Steeples and Jones 2003, Brown and Duguid 2000). Increasingly researchers have become aware of the ways the university resists such changes and provides a ‘resourceful constraint’ to the changes surrounding the introduction of networked learning (Brown and Duguid 2000, Cornford 2002). The take-up and use of digital resources by academic staff will be a critical factor in the success of attempts to integrate networked technologies into university teaching. There has been little research work to date that investigates the ways in which academic practice varies in relation to digital resources although there is a significant tradition of research concerned more broadly with disciplinary differences amongst academics. Two key issues are identified, different discipline and subject areas show significant divergence in the types and uses of digital resources and progression seems to affect the use of resources within the different disciplines. The research supports the view that disciplinary and subject differences reported in other contexts have a significant influence in relation to the use of digital resources. This will be added to Academic Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide.
