PC-based media centre in a wall-socket

PC-based media centre in a wall-socket

PC-based media centre in a wall-socket 07/16/2004 05:17 AM

This is pretty cool -- a prototype wallplate with three sockets, a USB port and a hard-drive, for use as a home media appliance.

The original brief by ComCom was to design a remote control. Thank Toshiko, he looked further than the brief and designed a line of 22 integrated electronic products. One of them is this wall mount triple socket. It has a USB port and a built-in hard disk. You can store music and movies in it and send them to other products in the same product line. The system will be shown in October in ComCom's show apartment in Tokyo.

A media center for your wall. That was the creation of 22 integrated electronic products that fit nicely into a little white box. On the surface it looks like a run of the mill electrical socket. Upon closer inspection however, you will find that it offers a USB port and a built-in hard disk so that you can store movies and music on it if you so desire….

Broadband out of your Wall Power Socket 07/11/2004 09:12 AM

The talk about broadband being delivered via power lines is a reality and is being rolled out in several locations. For those of you that don't want to string network cable all over the house to add WiFi extensions there is good news. Technology is available today to use your homes power lines to add network drops. Cool ehh. Thanks to Dave at Scriptin g News for the link. [New York Times]

Microsoft Announces Windows Media
Connect Technology, Enabling Seamless
Media Transfer Between Windows XP-Based
PCs and Consumer Electronics Devices
01/08/2004 07:36 PM
Today at the 2004 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Microsoft Corp. announced Windows® Media Connect, technology designed to enable hardware manufacturers to easily develop devices such as Digital Media Receivers (DMRs), which have rich functionality for playing digital media files stored on personal computers over home networks. A broad range of industry leaders have announced their support of this upcoming technology, including leading PC OEMs and consumer electronics device manufacturers including Arcadyan Technology Corp., Creative Labs, Dell Inc., Mediabolic Inc., PRISMIQ Inc., Rockford Corp., Roku, Simple Devices Inc. and Toshiba. Leading content service providers such as LAUNCH Music on Yahoo!, MusicNow (formerly FullAudio), and Napster also endorsed Windows Media Connect for its ability to extend the reach of their content and services to a new range of consumer devices. Available in 2004, Windows Media Connect technology will overcome two critical hurdles faced by networked media devices today: compatibility between proprietary devices and ease of access to content stored on the PC.

Location based media

Location based media 04/11/2004 02:29 PM

This is something Mikel and Marc Eisenstadt will like.

The Art and Science of Location and Media.

Visual RadioI came across two interesting experiments involving location metadata and media today.
First, scientists Roberto Cipolla and Duncan Robertson at the University of Cambridge are building a system for inferring location from image content:

Roberto Cipolla and Duncan Robertson have developed a program that can match a photograph of a building to a database of images. The database contains a three-dimensional representation of the real-life street, so the software can work out where the user is standing to within one metre.

Their project is the inverse of the Mobile Media Metadata project, which aims to infer image content from contextual metadata (including location). It is interesting to consider how the technologies might work together: taking a picture of a building tells the system where you are (South Hall). Knowing where you are tells the system what you are doing there (attending class), from which it can infer who the people in the picture are (your classmates)…
Second, artists Pall Thayer, Sara Kolster, and Pete Gomes are playing with the concept of geocinema, using open-source tools to superimpose GPS coordinates on video on real-time. Cool, but how much more interesting would it be if they could:

  1. convert those coordinates to higher-level semantic location metadata ("the place I passed out last night"), and
  2. use that metadata not just for superimposing on the video but as input for determining the structure of the video narrative?
