12/20/2003 03:56 AMWhen I recently searched for organisations that were trying to help
introduce charities to free software, and I found practically no
information. I find this particularly surprising, as charities are, in
many ways, the most worthy organisations to use free software. If you
can go to a charity and propose a solution that is more stable and
secure, free from vendor lock-in, and free to use and maintain, you
can help the organization plough the savings into the work it is there
to do.

Wireless Technologies to Help the
Disabled
02/19/2004 03:25 PMThe Georgia Institute of Technologies is working on developing an
array of devices, many of them using wireless technologies, to help
disabled people: One system uses GPS, a mobile PC, and headphones to
help blind people get around. The user programs a destination into the
computer then the computer generates sounds that the user perceives to
come from a certain direction. The sounds lead the user to the
destination. Another project will make switching on lights or changing
channels on the TV easier for people with limited motor control. Users
can make certain gestures in front of a panel that beams infrared
light at a video camera. When the user breaks the light with a
gesture, the movement is translated by a computer which comands a
household appliance over a wireless network. The researchers are able
to work on these projects due to a $5 million, five year federal grant
form the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research,
which was awarded two years ago....

iTunes hack disabled
03/22/2005 03:31 PMA security hole that allowed users of PyMusique software to tap into
the iTunes Music Store and purchase songs stripped of antipiracy
protections has been closed by Apple.
The PyMusique software emerged last week as a copy protection-free
back door into the popular iTunes store. One of the creators was Jon
Johansen, the Norwegian programmer responsible for releasing
DVD-copying software in 1999.
Apple released a statement Monday saying the problem had been fixed,
and that some iTunes customers would need to upgrade their
software."The security hole in the iTunes Music Store which was
recently exploited has been closed, and as a consequence the iTunes
Music Store will now sell music only to customers using iTunes version
4.7," the company said in a statement.

Cory Doctorow:
Wagner James Au sez, "Second Life resident lilone Sandgrain, who IRL
manages a large group of severely disabled people in a care center,
recently convinced her bosses to give her nine clients an SL account
of their own, to share. Since then, she's been slowly introducing
them to the world. (And vice versa.) Avatar customization, online
flirtation, and object creation take on new meanings, when they're
conducted by a group of nine disabled people with wildly varying
backgrounds from their wheelchairs."
"How did we decide on what we would look like, and our gender? We
formed the man avatar first, because that day, we had more men in the
group. We always wanted a female one, but we haven't taken the time to
create her yet. Mary and Johanna would like that very much. We decided
on how wilde would look first by starting with skin colors. We have
both black and white in our real life group, and didn't want to have
those because neither is better than the other. So we picked orange...
"Micah and Charlene could use the mouse," lilone replies, when I ask
her if it's possible for each member of wilde to enter Second Life
directly, perhaps with their own individual accounts. "John and
Nichole could, but wouldn't alone. Micah can't read. Charlene has one
hand, but can read." She shrugs. "None of them, really."
Their solution, for now at least, is lilone effectively acting as
their interface: she sits at the keyboard, with the wilde group
gathered in a semi-circle in a cramped care center room, peering over
her shoulder and into the monitor, at the world inside...
