The Academic Web Link Database Project
http://cybermetrics.wlv .ac.uk/database/

The Academic Web Link Database Project makes available databases of academic web links to the world research community. This project was created in response to the need for research into web links: including web link mining, and the creation of link metrics. It is aimed at providing the raw data and software for researchers to analyse link structures without having to rely upon commercial search engines, and without having to run their own web crawler. You may use all of the resources on this site for non-commercial reasons provided that you notify them if you have an academic paper or book published that uses the data in any way (so that they know the site is getting good use). This will be added to Academic Resources 2004 Internet MiniGuide and Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

President Bush public domain audio
project
06/18/2004 10:21 PM

Though the graphics on this project probably reveal the author's personal positions on the President, it is pretty cool that someone went to the trouble of creating an audio archive of every speech President George W Bush has made publicly. They're available for download as mp3, or you can get all 10 Gb of audio on three DVDs from the site.

It'd be cool if the Library of Congress site had this level of detail on all presidents, but this will do for now. They're even throwing a little music remix contest based on the speeches.

A Worthy Cause: Iraq's Archeological
Treasures
04/28/2004 08:21 PM
The looting which followed the invasion of Iraq was a terrible shock for many people, and the hand-wringing and worry which followed showed that many, including this author were convinced that some of the oldest and least-studied recordings of history, the Cuneiform Archive, had been lost and possibly destroyed. It also seemed clear that thousands of priceless artworks had been stolen and spirited away, with the administration more than happy to call the looting an "inside job", disregarding the fact that the protection offered these priceless relics by the US military forces was minimal at best, and very late in coming. The administration, as usual, was painting with a very wide brush - but so were the rest of us.

Collaborative Database of Sounds
04/12/2005 05:22 PM

In preparation for the International Computer Music Conference to be held in Barcelona in September 2005, the Music Technology Group and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, have created the freesoundproject. The freesound project is a collaborative database of sounds - not songs or compositions - but sounds: audio snippets, samples, recordings, bleeps. All sounds uploaded to the site must be licensed under the Creative Commons Sampling Plus license. The site has already collected a range of diverse sounds - from instrumental pieces to balloon sounds - and offers sample packs, remixes and groovy waveform images of the sounds. A great example of building out the creative commons!

Taking Your Case To The Court Of Public
Opinion... Online

Taking Your Case To The Court Of Public
Opinion... Online
12/03/2003 03:01 AM
It does feel like most high-profile trials these days are conducted in the press first, and later in the actual court room. While, historically, the press has had free reign, the latest trend is for people involved in high-profile trials to take their case directly to the public via a website. While they sound pretty carefully crafted, it does give people (often famous ones like Martha Stewart) the chance to respond to what people have been saying and give their side. Of course, this contrasts with the theory that defendants should stay as quiet as possible outside of court - and could open them up to more difficulties later on. However, it seems that many celebrities are realizing that the view in the court of public opinion may be more important in some cases than the actual results in the court of law.

Navy Tries Out Vocera 12/16/2003 01:42 PM
Crew on the USS Coronado are trialing Vocera's Wi-Fi badges: I know that hospitals and other organizations are already using the system from Vocera but I just don't see it. Depending on what the Navy wants to use them for, this sounds like a recipe for disaster. What if it's noisy and the badge can't pick up the user's command to dial someone? I'm still very cautious about anything that uses voice recognition because I've yet to see anything that works well....

The bright yellow BPAUV weighs 800 pounds, is 122 inches long, 21 inches in diameter and was last seen off the coast of Norway where it was taking part in a military exercise. The BPAUV was built by Bluefin Robotics where you can find more photos and video of the robot sub. The Navy's highly automated and futuristic-looking HSV-2 Swift vessel is still out looking for the little lost robot.

Russian Brain Installed in Navy Sub

Russian Brain Installed in Navy Sub 05/18/2004 11:54 AM
A Russian-designed neural controller that emulates the olivo-cerebellar motor control system of the human brain has been installed in a US Navy autonomous research vehicle according to a recent new release from the Office of Naval Research. The Olivo-cerebellar cluster-based universal control system, or UCS, was developed by engineers at Russia's Nizhny Novgorod State University and Rodolfo Llinás of NYU. They described the controller as a "weakly chaotic system" of neurons. The Navy hopes the controller will allow unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) to complete complex maneuvers more quickly and smoothly than traditional control systems. Tests of the robot sub will begin this summer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center
