If you like reading and discussing the news, this is the tool for you. Webbed Footnotes is a new, unique tool that enhances the web browsing experience. With Webbed Footnotes, you can annotate web pages with comments and can read and reply to the annotations left by others. Your comments will be placed on top of the page and will be visible to subsequent readers. When participating in this project, you will first be asked to install some software (see below). Next, you will be asked to visit our copy of the day's New York Times articles as much as you like for two weeks, read some articles and comment on them. You browse and read on the web like normal, except you get the added ability to comment directly on the webpage. You have the additional ability to "approve" of others' comments that you like. This promotes high-quality contributions. This feature is described in more detail after signing up. By participating in this project, you will be contributing to the development of new and interesting tools for online collaboration. It's entirely confidential -- you'll be asked during signup to choose a username to your liking. This has been added to the tools section of Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Software lets Macs handle Windows Media

Software lets Macs handle Windows Media
Video 9
12/22/2004 01:48 AM
It took a relatively small California company called Telestream to bridge the video creation incompatibilities of two PC giants. Apple's Macintosh computers maintain a stronghold in video editing, thanks to their art department-friendliness, a long legacy of use in Avid and competitors' video equipment and Apple's own professional software, Final Cut Pro. While Apple has carved out a video production niche, Microsoft has been trying to control video distribution through its Windows Media Video 9, which is currently popular for Web video, but also has the potential to be used for portable entertainment, DVDs, and even cable-TV distribution. Microsoft recently donated WMV9's codec, called VC-1, to the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), hoping to also make it a TV industry standard.

Alias: The Video Game

Alias: The Video Game 04/15/2004 07:38 PM

'Alias' takes on the gaming world: I'm not a big gamer, but this could temp me to start.

The main character — agile, clever and impossibly beautiful superspy Sydney Bristow (played by the agile, clever and impossibly beautiful actress Jennifer Garner) — could easily hold her own with the gallery from "Mortal Kombat."

Add in the fact that "Alias" and its epic, sometimes shocking sometimes schmaltzy storylines can be as engrossing as "Metal Gear Solid," one can convincingly argue that "Alias" is really just a video game that happens to come on your TV every Sunday night.

Apparently Marshall plays a prominent role. As it should be.

Video Game TV Shows

Video Game TV Shows 12/17/2003 02:29 PM
Now that video games are becoming more like professional sports it should be no surprise that a whole bunch of television programs involving video gaming are set to hit the tube. There have been a few such shows that have come on in the last year or so, but now they're going to be everywhere. It seems to be part of the battle of TV execs to combat the fact that more and more people are playing video games rather than watching TV. So, they figure they'll just throw up some programming that involves video games and hope it works.

If IKEA was a video game

If IKEA was a video game 01/25/2004 12:51 PM
Treating spousally mandated IKEA visits as a video-game seems like a pretty good coping strategy, especially when you've got a walk-through to crib from. This is a screamingly funny piece from The Morning News.
You start this world armed only with a UNIVERSAL FURNITURE-ASSEMBLY ALLEN WRENCH. This is the weakest weapon in IKEA: You will have to hit a person 16 times with it to kill them. So your primary goal in this level is to find more lethal means of dispatching your enemies.

As you enter the SHOWROOM, perform a rolling dodge to the left. Grab a free PAPER TAPE MEASURE and a handful of IKEA EMBLAZONED GOLF PENCILS from the kiosk near the entryway. The PENCILS serve quite well as ranged weapons, but it will take some time to master their use. Before venturing further in the world, stand at the kiosk and practice hurling GOLF PENCILS at patrons as they enter the SHOWROOM. Remember: Hitting the eyes does triple damage.
