Speaking Of
weight loss and exercise... Those who like their booze also like their
nicotine. People who drink to excess also tend to be chronic smokers,
and a new report suggests the combination of the two might prove more
toxic than either one alone. a small study found chronic smoking +
alcohol dependence = increased severity of brain damage. The frontal
lobes (short-term storage sites) turn out to be the most damaged. A
separate study used rats to show that alcoholism and excessive food
intake may share the same chemical pathways in the brain.

Excess Customer Churn is Costing Mobile
Operators Billions, Says Analysys
02/01/2005 08:49 PMIn 2003, excess customer churn cost European mobile operators EUR4.5
billion in unnecessary expenses and EUR5.6 billion in lost revenue –
equivalent to 8.6% of total mobile revenues. Controlling churn so that
rates are lower than competitors’ is an effective mechanism to
continue to grow revenues in a saturating market. Analysys warns that
mobile operators must pursue cost-effective churn-management
strategies that suit their market position, or face significant loss
of market share over the coming years. [PRWEB Jan 29, 2005]

Views of Freedom
05/17/2004 12:13 AMThe recent
relea
se of MT3.0 has provoked a whole lot of smart commentary around
the net over the past few days: for example see Simon Phipps (
here
and

a>) and Alan
Bleaklow. But the one that hit me hardest is Mark Pilgrim’s
Freedom
0. This piece has been criticized (correctly) as disconnected from
the way consumer software works (summary: users pay for features). And
indeed, Mark doesn’t think about this the way a consumer would: how
many of them run eleven sites? Instead, he thinks about this like
a CIO does .
“Freedom 0” is all about predictability and risk reduction; CIO
territory, big-time. Mark carries the argument to extremes because
that’s the kind of writer he is, but it’s an argument everyone in
the software business should be thinking about.

reading, I grabbed
The Last Defender of Camelot,
collected late works of Roger Zelazny, who was at the centre of the
SciFi universe a few decades back. It has a piece called
24
Views of Mount Fuji, by Hokusai which won a Hugo in 1986 and as
a story is only OK but as a narrative wrapped around a famous set of
pictures it’s awfully good. On impulse, I typed “hokusai 24”
into Google, to discover that there are 36 pictures in the original
series, but that Tim Eagen, back in ’98, poked around the Web and
ass
embled the 24 images from the Zelazny story; a fine piece of
curatorship and really an essential companion to reading the story.
Looking at one of them, I thought:
I’ve been there. There’s
an amusing narrative to accompany the views...
