View of SW Helsinki from Linnanmäki

« The view of Helsinki and Töölö Bay from the Pallokaruselli at Lintsi. In spite of the rain and the ice cream hand prints from the kiddies on the plexiglass, it looks like a (sur)realistic miniature of the city. The entire month of June was grey and rainy last year and the rest of the summer wasn't all that great either. I'm craving sunny warm weather, roller coasters and ice cream cones. I'd also like to wear something other than a turtleneck this summer. »

There are plans to finally build a pipeline from Humallahti (on the far right) to Töölönlahti (in the center) [diagram at the bottom] to help improve the fetid, stagnant water whose quality is often very poor, especially during summertime. It's a good idea that has been in the works for many years but it's a large bay with little circulation that will likely require more than pumping water from another less stagnant bay into it to address the problem, especially when the algae blooms arrive at the beaches and coastlines in the warm weather. I can't think of a single city in the US with a population over 1 or 2 million people that has a large lake/bay of this size in the city center since they're expensive to maintain and often just breeding grounds for diseases and bugs.

Broken World Pipeline

Broken World Pipeline 03/13/2003 10:14 AM

I just finished re-reading Soros "Financial Alchemy".  The book was written in 1987 or 1988, ten years before the tech bubble.  And although Soros lost money in the recent bust, he very clearly signaled in this book that the tech industry would be the next (and maybe last) engine of boom and bust to prevent the larger cycle negative trend from accelerating.  Now that the tech bust seems to have hit bottom, and the U.S. economy is showing signs of recovery, it may seem that the worst is over.  Indeed, the financial industry has recently been preoccupied with the "hedge fund bubble", giving us all the comforting feeling that we have moved past the tech bubble and are wobbling back toward equilibrium (because the hedge fund bubble is so much smaller than the tech bubble).

However, taken in the context framed by "Financial Alchemy" more than a decade ago, one could interpet the tech boom as a "last gasp" and futile attempt by the markets to resist the accelerating reversal of the macro trend.  And according to this very recent commentary by Soros, the macro trend is continuing to self-reinforce negatively.  Juxtaposed with the accelerating negative capital flow away from poorer nations, the talk about hedge fund "crisis" seems like a silly vanity designed to lull investors into slumbering pliability.

PC World, Mobile Pipeline on MIMO

PC World, Mobile Pipeline on MIMO 03/14/2005 05:47 PM
PC World's advice: go MIMO if you need range: A very sensible array of advice from Becky Waring over at PC World based on testing several of the current MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out) Wi-Fi gateways and adapters on the market. Waring offers the same recommendation that I have, which is that for homes or small businesses for which the price premium overcomes the cost and/or hassle of installing many individual access points, a MIMO gateway makes a great deal of sense. I would add that for networks in which throughput over Wi-Fi is a significant issue over short distances (up to about 50 feet), MIMO is the only technology on the market that can increase throughput even with existing 802.11g cards to their highest level at their greatest distance. If you don't need range or speed and adding access points is not a big deal--you have Ethernet installed throughout a house or office or understand how to configure Wireless Distribution System and can deal with its limitations--then the price premium is probably worth sitting on your wallet as the cost of this technology drops rapidly because of unit sales and competition. Meanwhile, Mobile Pipeline's editor writes about MIMO's early use in business: It's not ready for the enterprise yet, but even consumer-scale and early small-office MIMO gear has unmistakable benefits in certain cases that Haskin lists....

Microsoft's top brass has become fond of saying that Microsoft's got a lot of innovative new products in the pipeline. But what they haven't admitted is that their pipeline' has been in serious need of some Roto-Rooting for more than a year. In recent months, whenever Microsoft was running late with a product, officials blamed Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and/or tougher internal security criteria in general. So now that SP2 is officially out (it was released to manufacturing August 6), can we expect the slip-date blame-game to become a thing of the past? Hardly.
