Wi-Fi to Trump UWB

Wi-Fi to Trump UWB 09/03/2004 04:32 PM
This piece suggests that the standards battle over ultrawideband technology may allow the next generation of Wi-Fi to handle many functions dreamed of for UWB: The next iteration of Wi-Fi, 802.11n, is also in a standards battle of its own but apparently less contentious than the UWB battle. Products based on 802.11n will have similar throughput as UWB and a longer range but will be more prone to interference. Still, because it will be a future version of 802.11 which is already an entrenched standard it may see rapid adoption and be used for networking home entertainment products--a big market that UWB is after. Following the potential for Bluetooth to loose traction now that Ericsson is pulling back on its Bluetooth efforts, there's a chance that UWB may be primarily used as a cable replacement. UWB was designed as a very broadband networking technology that doesn't use a designated frequency band. The concept was originally exciting because of its efficient use of spectrum but it's had trouble getting off the ground. It will be interesting to watch how both 802.11n and UWB progress but there are so many uncertainties at this point that it's hard to predict how they might compete. While 802.11n is based on the existing popular standards, it is expected to require hardware upgrades so it will take time to infiltrate the market....

Austin Works to Trump Starbucks

Austin Works to Trump Starbucks 02/19/2004 12:43 PM
Partners in Free Wi-Fi, Austin Wireless, and Less Networks are offering free music to hotspots users in Austin: The groups have been working together to help local venues build free hotspots. The offering starts today and will extend through the end of SXSW 2004, the music festival. Hotspot users, who don't pay for access, will be able to listen to more than 500 songs for free. Users must have the iTunes player and the songs are available through Apple iTunes music share. Less Networks sees this as a one-up on an earlier Starbucks offering where visitors could listen to a CD for free. The groups have built 25 locations in Austin since September and have 3,600 registered users. Around 100 people log on to the networks every day. Workers don't charge venues for the help in setting up the networks or the software, which lets venues manage the hotspot....

Users Trump Library Vendors Again!

Users Trump Library Vendors Again! 09/02/2004 11:12 PM

Everyone is (rightly) talking about Peter Rukavina's homegrown RSS feeds for what he has checked out from his library (and new DVDs). I am overjoyed to see this, but saddened to see that once again users are having to route around library services because we're not providing the service ourselves (Your Honor, the prosecution submits LibraryLookup into evidence as Exhibit A).

I was going to leave the following comment on Aaron's post, but I was getting so agitated that I decided it made more sense to post it on my own site.

Rant: It's true libraries have limited resources, but they already have a vendor for their catalog, and that vendor should be the one leading the way.  Libraries must begin demanding these types of services from the vendors. It's crazy to see users writing code to compensate for a lack of services from library OPACs. Granted RSS has come on relatively quickly, but companies like Innovative and Sirsi need the equivalent of Google Labs in order to react faster to these types of disruptive technologies. If a user can write code to produce an RSS feed from the catalog, certainly the vendor can do even more on the backend.

This is a MAJOR wake-up call for integrated library system vendors, and libraries must force them to follow-through on this. I realize vendors don't have unlimited resources, but they could do a hell of a better job of listening to their customers and tracking trends. I've been trying to talk to Innovative about RSS feeds for MORE THAN 2 YEARS and they have never once contacted me in response to my comments, suggestions, or feedback. I talked about this at length with the ProQuest reps at the Texas Library Association conference, and I never heard back from them, either. In fact, it's embarassing to note that I've talked to several different vendors at various conferences and NONE of them have ever followed up with a response. That's pathetic, and I'm calling them on the carpet about it. From now on, when I go to a conference, I'm going to post the name of every vendor I talk to about RSS and we'll see if any of them have so much as the courtesy to follow up with me afterwards. I don't expect the floor reps to really get what I'm saying, but the promise of "I'll take this back to the home office" no longer holds any water for me without some type of follow-through.

Robert Scoble says, "If you're in PR now and not watching what several hundred of your best customers are saying about you you're at a severe disadvantage." I would expand that quote beyond just PR because there's enough going on in the online world of pagerank, trackback, social networking, and permanently-cached word-of-mouth to warrant tracking your brand no matter what industry/field you are in. Compared to most sectors, the library blogosphere is large, incestuous, and not afraid to speak its mind. It still amazes me to think that companeis devoted to library services don't pay attention to it.

Here's hoping they start. Soon.

Grokker May Trump Google In Opening Up the Invisible Web
http://www.fortune.com/fortune/fastforward/0,15704,563090,00.html

Had any good "info-revelations" lately? A re-tooled software application called Grokker may be just the ticket for an infusion of serendipitous little wonders. Grokker (available at Groxis.com) takes the raw output of a query and organizes it (via visual representation) into categories and subcategories. When you type in, say, "nanotechnology," Grokker sifts through data from multiple search engines and you initially see a big circle, within which are smaller subset circles with such labels as "molecular," "conference," "technology," "science" and "research." It even includes a category circle on "children's books." Click on "molecular," and that circle enlarges so you can see several further subcircles, one of which is "molecular assemblies." Click on that, and another category -- "molecular assembly sequencing software" -- shows up. Groxis CEO R.J. Pittman says Grokker promises to crack open some mysteries of the Web: "Google has indexed several billion pages, but there are between 550 and 600 billion in total on what's referred to as the invisible Web or deep Web. Within a year Grokker will have ten times the reach of Google in terms of available Web pages." The Los Angeles and Chicago school districts have taken trial licenses for their students.
