Whither Mono?

A healthy software ecosystem has to create niches where commercial and
open-source projects can thrive. Java does that, but is neither an
open standard nor a first-class citizen of the Windows platform. The
Common Language Infrastructure is, at least in theory, both. Whether
theory will become practice is an important question that makes
Project Mono worth watching. [Ful

07/01/2004 04:59 PMWhat is
Mono?
Mono is a comprehensive open source development
platform based on the .NET framework that allows IT and ISV developers
to build Linux and cross-platform applications with unprecedented
productivity.
Mono’s .NET implementation is based on the ECMA standards for C#
and the Common Language Infrastructure.
(spotter: Edd, who’s
also done a bit of job shuffling)
ISV is “Independent Software Vendor” - bad enough having so
many tech TLAs let alone business ones…
[
RAW -
Danny Ayers]
See! Even a Semantic Web guru like Danny Ayers can learn a new
thing - epecially when it comes to commercial software
development.
I first heard the term ISV while I was still working for
Bally-Midway - in 1982 - before we started MacroMind. Throughout teh
80's it was a eord bantered around saught after and analysed - much
like the installed base of GUIs or CD-ROMs.
Some things we take for granted. Other things we yearn for.
Others things fade into the infrastructure - fulfilling the long
dreamed "ubiquity" we all earn for.
There used to be something called the "CD ROM" market. Because of
that - there were CD ROM business plans, CD ROM VCs, CD ROM IPOs and
needless to say - almost an equal number of CD ROM bankruptcys.
But I am confidant we won't make the same mistake with the semweb -
right?
We won't bog down into infintisimal discussions on which is the
right way to do the same thing (from four available sceanrios) -
right?
We won't meander off into esoteric discussions (and obligatory
conferences) on weirdo schemas - shall we (NOT.)
And I'm confidant - that we won't end up like CD-I, 3DO, Amiga,
Wink, Liberate, Respond, Kalieda, Taligent, Newton, [insert you own
favorite bankrupt technology] - right?

Mono: Joe pointed this out in a comment to an earlier entry, but just in case you don't monitor
comments, I wanted to make sure everyone sees this. It's .Net for
Linux.
The Mono project is an open source effort sponsored by Novell to
create a free implementation of the .NET Development Framework.
Mono includes a compiler for the C# language, a Common Language
Runtime (CLR) for the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) and a set
of class libraries. The runtime can be embedded into your application.
It implements both ADO.NET and ASP.NET.
It gets better. SharpDevelop is
a free IDE (GPL even), and that's where the strength of Microsoft's
various platforms has always resided.
develop (short for SharpDevelop) is a free IDE for C# and
VB.NET projects on Microsoft's .NET platform. It is open-source (GPL),
and you can download both sourcecode and executables from this

Why Mono is significant
Why Mono is significant
07/19/2004 11:20 AMMono is an open source implementation of the .Net development
framework as developed by Microsoft and submitted to the ECMA
standards authority. The project, which released version 1.0 last
month, is significant in several ways: it offers the potential to
unite the open source communities for Windows, Linux, and other
platforms; it fulfills the niche for a powerful migration tool; it
builds upon existing open source technologies such as Mozilla and
Apache; and -- most importantly -- it illustrates the resolve of the
open source community to rise to Microsoft's challenge.

Reactions to the Whither Mono? column
03/19/2003 10:26 PM
Jacques Surveyer has posted a
thoughtful response to my Whither Mono? column. His
item, entitled "Mono is eerily like the disease," says in part:
Take a gander at http://gru
nge.cs.tu-berlin.de/~tolk/vmlanguages.html and the number of
languages that use the Java JVM - about 3-4 times as many languages
that use .NET. But the really insidious notion is that .NET is
"language neutral". As Visual Basic and Cobol developers have learned
to their dismay - adopting a language to conform to the CLI/CLR/.NET
Libraries means a number of Frankenstein-like cut and add operations.
In the case of VB it is so bad that Microsoft's own enginers started
to call VB.NET Visual Fred because it is so different from its
predecessor, VB6.
Adds
Kevin Altis, in
an email quoted with permission:
We do have examples of other
languages running in the JVM. Jython in particular works great, I
don't know
of any "scripting language" that works well in the CLR, only the early
proof-of-concepts which aren't viable for real work. VB.NET is
basically C#
light, so maybe only one language works in the CLR.

Eclipse download hell
Eclipse download hell
12/17/2004 06:33 PMOne of the many thing the Mozilla/Firefox team have got
right is the fantastic ease with which the application can be
downloaded. Visitors to www.mozilla.org are greeted with a
nice big "Free Download" link, aimed straight at the version for their
(automatically detected) operating system hosted on a mirror
geographically close to their IP address. It's hard to think of any way they
could improve on this.
Contrast the Firefox experience to that facing anyone who
wishes to download the Eclipse IDE. By far the most common usage of Eclipse is
as an intelligent Java development environment, but the front page of
eclipse.org makes no mention of
this, instead calling it "a kind of universal tool platform - an open
extensible IDE for anything and nothing in particular" followed by a
link to a white paper. If you wanted to be pedantic about Firefox you
could call it a "development platform for XUL-based web-centric
applications" (and maybe mention the embedded HTML parser in a
foot-note) but doing so would be utterly counter-productive.
So, on to the downloads page,
embedded in a late-90s era frameset (at least they have the decency to
link to a new frameset for each page, thus keeping bookmarks
functional). This is a list of mirrors, ordered alphabetically by the
name of the company or organisation sponsoring the mirror with only
the domain name of each site as an indication of its geographical
location. The link to the infinitely more useful geographical
list is hidden at the bottom of the page.
I'm in the UK, so I hit the link for the UK
mirror service. I'm after the most recent stable release, which I
happen to know is version 3.0.1. Here are my options:
I'm going to take an educated guess and go for
R-3.0.1-200409161125 - after all, the R probably stands
for "release", it's got the version number in it and it was last
modified on the 7th of November which sounds about right for a recent
release. I'm now faced with a list of files too long to show here, at least 7 of
which have macosx-carbon in the filename. Here are the most likely
contenders:
- eclipse-JDT-3.0.1-macosx-carbon.tar.gz - 13.9M
- eclipse-JDT-SDK-3.0.1-macosx-carbon.tar.gz -
24.6M
- eclipse-platform-3.0.1-macosx-carbon.tar.gz -
23.1M
- eclipse-platform-SDK-3.0.1-macosx-carbon.tar.gz -
51.1M
- eclipse-RCP-3.0.1-macosx-carbon.tar.gz - 4.5M
- eclipse-RCP-SDK-3.0.1-macosx-carbon.tar.gz -
16.3M
- eclipse-SDK-3.0.1-macosx-carbon.tar.gz - 80.8M
I tried
eclipse-platform-3.0.1-macosx-carbon.tar.gz first, which
gave me the IDE but not the Java editing features that I was actually
interested in. Next I tried
eclipse-JDT-SDK-3.0.1-macosx-carbon.tar.gz, which gave me
the plugins but not the actual application. It turns out that
eclipse-SDK-3.0.1-macosx-carbon.tar.gz, my third choice,
was the one that I needed.
I'm a huge fan of Eclipse: it makes Java development
bearable (see the
IDE Divide) but installing it is such a pain I nearly gave up! A
note to the Eclipse guys: please, please take a look at how
Firefox are distributing their application and see if you can apply
some of the same techniques to Eclipse. Your users will thank you for
it.

IBM now has it's own Java client side GUI technology - called SWT. There's a battle going on over two different approaches to Java
client sides GUIs (between IBM and Sun/BEA) and IBM is using Eclipse for getting their's
adopted. Now Oracle is getting involved. :-)
Even better - is all the other tsuff that come along with Eclipse -
basically creating a client-side 'middleware' layer.
I've already met one major social networking play that's planning
on building their free, open P2P system with SWT. Watch for even
sexier deep linking new standards for all this stuff.
Thank you to IBM for sticking to their guns. The customer is

I had been using Eclipse 3.0 RC1 for the past week but it was
sluggish and I ran into
a few hangups, so when I saw that Eclipse
3.0 RC2 was available, I got right on it. Definitely
better.
Startup is faster and shutdown takes only a second.
Nice. I think I'll
stick with this one until the final release is out which is due end
of this month. Eclipse
bug count looks healthy although Platform UI and SWT team seems
to be struggling
a bit.
Downloading Eclipse took forever btw. They have mirrors but
mirrors are troublesome
to use because it forces the user to find the package among the
mirrors to download.
They should use BitTorrent IMHO and turn the mirrors into
seeds. BitTorrent
needs to be more location-aware (actually route-aware) though.

More on Eclipse RCP
More on Eclipse RCP
07/11/2004 06:25 PM
I had problem building a working RCP application, so I put together
the RCP Text
Editor Example to see how to configure a RCP app. If you
want to build it
yourself, instructions from the main
RCP page at Eclipse site is below. The page is
actually a view into
CVS, so I expect/hope the real main page will appear in the near
future.
-
Download the RCP Runtime build from the Downloads page,
and extract it to a folder such as c:\texteditor-example.
-
Download the RCP
text editing component zip and extract it to the
eclipse/plugins subfolder.
-
Download the texteditor
plugin zip and extract it to the eclipse/plugins subfolder.
-
Replace the eclipse/configuration/config.ini file with the
appropriate config file
from the texteditor plugin. For example, on Windows, copy
config_win32.ini file from
org.eclipse.ui.examples.rcp.texteditor_1.0.0 plugin to
eclipse/configuration and rename
it to config.ini.
-
Run the eclipse executable: For example, on Windows, run
eclipse.exe.
Step #4 is the key step while the rest are just downloading and
expanding files.
After step #5, you should see a barebone text editor. On
Win32, the RCP text
editor has disk footprint of 6MB and memory footprint of
28MB. In
comparison, NotePad2 has disk
footprint of 540K and memory footprint of 4MB. SWT apps I
built before had substantially
smaller footprints than the RCP app, but still significantly larger
than native apps.
So what do we get for roughly ten times the footprints?
Plugins! You can
put together a fancy standalone IDE for Perl, Python, or PHP by
packaging plugins
from the EPIC, PyDev,
or PHPEclipse
projects with
RCP. You'll need to pour some sweats to glue things together
because those
projects are probably not fully RCP ready yet.
If you are not building an IDE, don't need IDE like level of
extensibility, or there
aren't many plugins useful to your product, you are probably better
off skipping RCP
and building on top of just SWT instead.
