Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport Had 5,000
Sessions in March
04/20/2004 02:04 PMEvery once in a while, we get hard numbers: Concourse reports 5,000
sessions in March for its Minneapolis-St. Paul service: MSP is the
17th busiest airport in the world by passenger volume with nearly
three million passengers entering and exiting the airport each month
(counted only once during each trip in Dec. 2003). With a mature
airport having 0.2 percent of passengers use the service--with total
gross revenue anywhere from $2,500 to $25,000 for those sessions
because of aggregator partnerships--this should be an object lesson
for new entrants into the airport market....

“Experts at Sophos have warned computer users that a file
posing as a suicide note from Arnold Schwarzenegger is in fact
infected by a malicious Trojan horse. Thousands of messages posted to
internet newsgroups over the weekend encourage computer users to
download a file containing a supposed suicide note from
actor-turned-politician Schwarzenegger. In reality, users who run the
file may be opening their computers up to attack from
hackers.”…

Wi-Fi Heats up in Minneapolis
Wi-Fi Heats up in Minneapolis
01/22/2004 02:02 PMBusinesses in Minneapolis are taking advantage of Wi-Fi in a number of
ways: An outdoor Winter Carnival in town is blanketed with coverage,
mainly for employees. Construction superintendents who work for a home
builder can stop by any one of the company's model homes to get
Internet access to keep track of construction projects. It sounds like
a group of volunteers may be planning to cover a park in town too....

04/13/2005 02:24 PMDays after Philadelphia rolls out its plan to provide municipal

Minneapolis Joins Unwired City Trend
04/12/2005 10:44 AM Minneapolis plans outsourced city-wide network: The city will request
bids on a citywide network to serve city workers, businesses, and
residences, but Minneapolis won't have any ownership of the network
nor will they put one red cent in. The goal of the network would be
ubiquitous 1 to 3 Mbps coverage through Wi-Fi hotspots that would be
tied together through what sounds like an entirely new fiber-optic
network. That leaps this proposal into a much larger cost category,
and explains why the city expects proposals from consortiums not
individual companies. The city has talked to 26 potential bidders.
Unfortunately, this otherwise accurate article states that
Philadelphia's network will be owned and operated by the city; I've
already written to them about this error. The piece also notes that
two local companies offer WiMax, which isn't possible as the
certification process isn't done yet, and confuses WiMax's
point-to-point offering with the future mobile WiMax that will allow
roaming. WiMax won't be too expensive for residential use when other
alternatives aren't available or when operators are serious about
competing on price: the higher initial cost can be offset by a lower
ongoing capital cost for infrastructure versus wireline broadband,
meaning that WiMax operators will eat more of the setup in exchange
for contract commitments. This was true in the early DSL and cable
modem days when those devices cost several hundred dollars each....

Free Wi-Fi

Dunn Bros. is a beloved Twin Cities institution, according to
the folks there: Dunn offers Wi-Fi at no cost in
its coffeeshops that have the service in contrast to competitors like
Caribou (SBC FreedomLink) and Starbucks (T-Mobile). Not unusual. But
Dunn will take to magazines and buses promoting its free service. Once
you push something like free Wi-Fi you need to ensure that
all of your locations sport it.

Marketers take note
Marketers take note
03/19/2003 10:42 PMOne thing I can't get out of my mind as we approach an impending
war (in just 8 hours!) is the supreme display of marketing prowess on
the part of the Bush Administration.
We were attacked by a rogue terrorist group on September 11, 2001.
It seemed clear to me at the time that there would be a worldwide
police action to find them and deal with them. It was six billion vs.
a few hundred (a couple thousand, tops?). That wasn't the approach
however, and we ended up bombing Afghanistan in an attempt to kill all
the operatives that were still in the country. Perhaps it was the cold
war era leaders in the administration, but even though we were
attacked by a terrorist group and not a country, we decided to limit
our actions to a response in another country.
But here's where the marketing comes in. We're not sure if we got
the one guy we were looking for. After a few months, this country
seems to give up on getting him, but instead of discussing failure,
the conversation is shifted. We now need to remove another dictator
that has been problematic in the past. Without much in the way of
evidence of current wrongdoing, and in some cases outright lying, the
majority went along with it. Not only was the conversation shifted, it
remains shifted and the administration is achieving the goals it
clearly set out to accomplish.
I don't know if you noticed, but this is huge. Imagine a marketing
group saying that in 6 months, no one will talk about Google.com any
more, we'll all be discussing Teoma or All The Web for anything search
related, even though they don't have very many compelling reasons you
should do so. Then imagine them pulling it off, and six months from
now no one cares much for google.
Kudos to the Bush Adminstration for pulling off one of the biggest
strokes of marketing genius I've ever seen.

Anne had lots of Marathon stuff written up (we compose everything
offline in Textedit) and the fucking computer locked up. Like a
bonehead, I'd forgotten to save it (along with some other important
stuff) so it was lost.
I tried cashing in all my computer geek points to resurrect it, but it
was DC 45, and all I got was a modified 8.
So that's been set back at least a few days. We both know how many of
you guys who supported us and Kris are looking forward to the story
wrapping up, but I hope you'll bear with us a little bit longer while
our Real Lives take up most of our attention.

A Note on Security in PHP
A Note on Security in PHP
01/05/2005 04:43 PMThe PHP Development Team has issued an important statement that deals
with the security of PHP, and of PHP-based applications. The trigger
for releasing this statement was the growing misconception in the PHP
community regarding recent security problems, which exploited bugs in
PHP applications, rather than bugs in PHP itself. It's a recommended
read for anybody using PHP.
