SpyView: Freeway Pro 3.5 12/30/2004 12:04 PM
SoftPress Systems' flagship application, Freeway Pro, is an HTML generator that offers the user the ability to create functional, professional websites without needing to hand-code their websites. Freeway Pro is not an HTML editor; it simply generates the HTML so the user doesn't have to work with the code. This is one reason why Freeway Pro differs from other popular professional website creation applications like Adobe's GoLive and Macromedia's DreamWeaver. Experience with these two applications shows just how much Freeway Pro differs in use. The application is very similar to a desktop publishing application, and allows creative individuals who are lacking the technical skills to create inventive web pages without knowing HTML or JavaScript. Included with Freeway Pro is a 40 colour page Quick Start guide as well as an extensive 393 page User Guide that includes an easy to find index and an excellent contents page. The comprehensive user guide contains many pictures and easy-to-understand, step-by-step instructions for use. Freeway Pro runs on both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9. One disadvantage to this application is that there is no "Open Recent" option in the File menu, so users are expected to find the file they are working on each time they open the program. Other Freeway Pro features include WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editing, support for advanced font features offered by Apple's ATSUI technology, automatic graphic conversion into Web formats, automatic image slicing, and the choice between HTML 3.2, 3.2 plus Cascading Style Sheets or HTML 4 output. Freeway Pro is available from SoftPress for $249.00 or for $189.00 for qualifying educators or students. Pros: WYSIWYG creation Easy browser previewing Works with both Mac OS 9 and OS X Cons: No HTML editing No "Open Recent" in File menu System Requirements: Mac OS X (G3, 128 MB RAM) or Mac OS 9 (64 MB RAM) If you have a product you would like Spymac to review, please contact kristie@spymac.com.

SoftPress Systems' consumer web site creation application provides an easy way for beginners or students to create web pages without the knowledge of HTML. A speedier version of the company's flagship application Freeway Pro, Freeway Express comes at a more affordable price but still offers the "speed, power and design flexibility of Freeway Pro." Freeway Express handles like a desktop publishing application by allowing the user to drag and drop images and text right onto the page. The program allows creative individuals who are lacking the technical skills to create inventive web pages without learning or knowing HTML. Included with Freeway Express is a Buttons FAST Pack, 29 templates, PDF tutorials and User Guide, a 40-page printed colour Quick Start Guide, as well as 15-day trial versions of Graphics FAST Pack and Navigation FAST Pack. The comprehensive user guide contains many pictures and easy-to-understand, step-by-step instructions for use. Other Freeway Pro features include WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editing, the choice between HTML 3.2, 3.2 plus Cascading Style Sheets or HTML 4 output, importing of TIFF, native Photoshop and Illustrator files and PDF graphics (on Mac OS X), PostScript Type 1 and OpenType fonts in addition to TrueType, custom Actions (and write your own) to automate your designs and extend Freeway, and built-in spell checking and hyphenation in 14 different languages. As with Freeway Pro, one disadvantage to this application is that there is no "Open Recent" option in the File menu. Without the "Open Recent" option, users are expected to search for the file they were working on each time they open the program rather than selecting recent Freeway Express files from a drop-down list. Freeway Express works with Mac OS 9 and OS X and is available from SoftPress for $89.00.
