Matrix online game hires real actors to

Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live "actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game so far.

Maryland Game Developer Vision
Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PM
Vision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency) volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and personalities while managing their activities and personal relationships like “The SIMS®”. News.com reports that Wharton feels the Google love. Apparently in radio ads they're suggesting that listeners Google for "Wharton West" rather than remember the longer domain name. "We took a calculated risk because we figured out how to get (top billing) in the first place, but we keep monitoring it, and if it changes we have to do something else," [said Neal Nevaras, director of executive programs.] "But why do I pay for it if I don't have to." Meanwhile, in Buffy the Vampire Slayer the practice of Googling was mentioned. According to plasticbag it was: Willow: "Have you tried googling her?" Xander (shocked): "Willow, she's only seventeen!" As Mark Bernstein points out, she not only appears on Google, but has her own domain. plasticbag: "And it will be funny." plasticbag: "Maybe you had to be there..." MetaFilter: "An example of innovative web design." W6 Daily: "...this isn't the site..."...

If you're a musician, and you want to let your fans know they won't get sued if they download your songs, you should check out the Music Sharing License. It lets your fans know they can download and share, but not sell or make any commercial use out of your music. The Uptones, a Bay Area based ska band, are a great example of a band who makes a few songs available under the Music Sharing License, so their fans can download, but not worry about lawsuits.
