Boycott Apple

Boycott Apple 06/29/2004 12:21 PM

Man oh man. So here I was - getting ready to write a big post on Apple's Dashboard and it's similarity to Konfabulator - and Russell Beattie does it for me.

Thanks Russ!

As bad as Microsoft is - Apple is worse. But they're doing our R&D for us - so hey - we too can play at that game - right?

===============

Dear Independent Apple Developers,
Walk out.

It's very simple. Support your fellow developer or watch as the next application Apple copies wholesale is yours. They've done it to Adobe, they've done it to Watson, they've done it to OmniWeb and now they're doing it to Konfabulator. I'm a wanna be switcher and a Jobs-devotee and if you've been reading this weblog for any amount of time you know I normally never miss a keynote once it's available online, but this time I don't have the stomache to bother watching it. This is the biggest ripoff ever.

I think in the past I've seen some justification for Apple's infringing on third party developers. I think we've all done that - things that "should" be part of the OS and make wholistic sense, well, we'll give Apple some leeway. A menu widget or extensions to Sherlock. Okay. A web browser? Why not. Even Brent saw the practicality in adding RSS to Safari, no? RSS is getting more popular every day, it's only a matter of time before Apple and Microsoft add it in.

But copying the JavaScript-enabled Desktop Widgets? Nonononono. That's not right. I remember when I first read about Konfabulator about a year ago I was amazed at how cool the app was and how ingenious it was as well. We *all* love elegant, simple to expand solutions like Konfabulator. But vital to the Mac OS? No. Not in any respect. For Apple to copy Konfabulator like they did is just stealing. Not "Great Artist" stealing like what Jobs did at PARC, just plain outright idea theft. A common robbery. A mugging.

If I was at the WWDC tomorrow I'd walk out. Pick a time. Say Noon. Go out and stop traffic on Mission St. for 30 minutes, get the local press to cover it, maybe someone can give a call to CNN. Give Apple a black eye, they just put one of your fellow developers out of business. They want to poke fun at Redmond about copying ideas and then turn around and rip off ideas and implementations like this wholesale? It's hypocrisy at the highest level. Don't stand for it.

Pass the word.

-Russ

Scoble agrees.

And Arlo Rose has something to say about this - too.

In case it wasn't clear why I will never never never never ever produce anything for Macs again.

My initials are Marc Aaron Canter. We were the 10th Macintosh developers (back in 1984) - and all they ever did for us was lie about us, steal, cheat, try to put us out of business and.... you wonder why I feel this way?

Maybe Arlo does too.

The worst thing is - they're fucking hypocrites.

I say we all go copy and steal the entire Apple OS and make it open source.

Look at all the locked in folks who buy Macs - that's what REALLY pisses me off. There really is no alternatuve - is there?

Where's the Linux desktop alternative?

By supporting Apple by giving them money - we're all perpetuating evil (well not me - I don't buy Apple products - haven't since 1996.) These guys have no scruples.

Especially Doc and Joi and Loic and Anil and Dan Gillmor and Weinberger and Kevin Burton and other people who can make a difference. You guys GOTTA get Michael Robertson, IBM, Dell - SOMEBODY to solve this connundrum!

We know what Microsoft is gonna do. We know what's possible and what we can do. So let's map out what we can clone in 1-2-3 years (make sure it supports Indigo and everyting MS is doing), base it upon a world of open micro-content standards, present that to the public as our roadmap - and start the migration - NOW!

What if Pierre Omidyar put up $100M - $200M - fuck it - $500M - couldn't we just clone the Mac and put it out there - and give it to Dell, etc.?

That would serve them right.

So stop buying Macs - PLEASE!

It's like buying stock in Haliburton.

I, Robot Boycott

I, Robot Boycott 07/16/2004 01:34 AM
By the 1940s Isaac Asimov grew tired of reading endless pulp stories about masses of evil, marauding robots attempting to destroy their creators. His answer was a series of stories in which Susan Calvin, a robopsychologist, solves mysteries caused by conflicts in the Laws of Robotics, a set of ethical rules governing robot behaviour. Asimov's first collection of robot stories was titled I, Robot. Hollywood is trying to pull a fast one by licensing the title of Asimov's book for a completely unrelated movie, originally called Hardwired, about masses of evil, marauding robots attempting to destroy their creators. A hasty rewrite of the script added a few references to the Laws of Robotics and renamed some characters to match Asimov's story. There's a Susan Calvin in the film but she's just along to watch Will Smith shoot things. A petition failed to persuade 20th Century Fox to change the name of the film and now growing numbers of outraged Science Fiction fans request that people boycott the opening week of I, Robot. I plan on joining them, in an effort to put a dent the highly valued opening week revenue. If the marketing tactic makes money this time, Fox will likely use the recently licensed titles to Asimov's Foundation novels to market more unrelated films.

A new BBC Dr Who series will not have any Daleks in it, because the estate of the creator of the Daleks has demanded creative control over any show that licenses the ambulatory homicidal pepper-mills.
For its part, the Terry Nation estate accused the Corporation of attempting to "ruin the brand of the Daleks". Estate representative Tim Hancock said: "We wanted the same level of control over the Daleks that we have enjoyed for the last 40 years. If the BBC wanted to re-make any of George Lucas' films, you can bet George Lucas would have something to say about it."

Disney dooms self with moronic Bluetooth

03/28/2005 07:32 PM
Cory Doctorow: We live in a weird, temporary bubble during which it is actually possible to sell people ringtones and video and crap for their phones, because mobile phones usually come locked down and unlocking them isn't a common practice yet. So there's this temporary opportunity for media companies to bleed their customers for music and movies they already own in tiny, stripped down "mobile" versions, and any company that doesn't get in on the act now is gonna lose its chance soon, as market forces drive phones to more and more open states.

Which is why Disney is blowing its own goddamned brains out by refusing to sell any of its stuff via mobile phones' Bluetooth connections. I mean, all this crap is already available on Kazaa as MPEGs and MP3s, where anyone in the world can download them, but Disney is freaking out because they're worried that someone 10 feet away from me and I might trade our Mickey wallpaper.

They're boycotting Bluetooth until such time as Bluetooth starts to include DRM. I participate in standards efforts for DRM, and they are slow, contentious and ultimately fruitless. Which means that by the time DIsney wakes up and recognizes the future that's gnawing at its ass, the opportunity will be gone.

Dear fellow Disney shareholders, we need to get this company back on the rails before it outsmarts itself into bankruptcy.

Walt Disney Co., for one, won't allow its wireless partners to deliver any of its ringtones, video games and other content to phones with Bluetooth or infrared, another technology for direct connections between devices, until the industry adopts a more secure format to prevent unauthorized sharing and copying.

The Haunted Mansion Fan Club has shut down for one month in solidarity with Roy Disney's resignation from the Walt Disney Company's board of directors, and they're calling for a one-month boycott of Disney parks and movies in order to convince Michael Eisner to resign.
The list of accusations leveled against Mr. Eisner by family groups, children advocates, safety officials, the press, consumers, stock holders, and Disney cast members is voluminous and can no longer be ignored or tolerated. Don't stand by as this man leads to ruin the dreams and memories of untold millions of people. Help take back OUR magical kingdom and restore what Walt created and gave to us. Enough is enough.

As his past few columns have vacillated between the personal and the musical, he has opted to end his run at the beginning of September.

How Much Data Do We Produce? And How
Much Is Spam?
07/27/2004 12:38 PM
A new study from a data storage company (watch the bias) says that we're all creating more data more rapidly thanks to ever growing hard drives. There's no indication how they worked this out, but they do seem to attribute quite a bit of that data growth to spam. There's one weird bit, suggesting that by 2007 the average email will include a 650 kb attachment. Now, certainly that would increase the amount of data being sent around, but they give absolutely no basis for stating such a thing. Maybe they're just counting virus spam and all the mess it causes, but it would seem that a claim that every email will soon be pushing that much data around should be supported by a bit more of an explanation.

Hitachi to produce 1 TB drives 04/04/2005 11:36 AM
Hitachi on Monday is set to announce it will release hard drives containing 230 gigabits of data per square inch by 2007, making a 1-inch 20 GB microdrive, allowing for a 20 GB iPod mini. According to senior vice president of product strategy and marketing at Hitachi Bill Healy, the density breakthrough represents a refinement in perpendicular recording. Hard drives currently store data in a longitudinally, with the heads scanning over a horizontal plane. For perpendicular recording, data bits are aligned vertically, allowing for more data to be placed into an area. "We're redesigning the head and disc quite significantly," Healy told CNET. "All we have done is longitudinal recording in hard drives since the 1950s. We've got a babysitting program running in the back to see how the hard drives are doing. We are building up our understanding of our quality and reliability."

XDR RAM is going to be fast. I predict even more unneeded processor cycles in my near future.

Toshiba is lining up the world's fasters memory chips. Testing has begun and they should be on sale in the second half the year, the company said. The 512MB XDR (extreme data rate) DRAM chips run at 4.8GHz - about 12 times faster than typical desktop PC memory.
Even better, Samsung and Elpida are on route to deliver the new chips in around the same time-frame—just in time for use in the Playstation 3, in fact. (Thanks, Luke!)
