Optware Corp., the developer of Collinear Holographic* Data Storage System, announced today that it had achieved successfully world's first recording and play back of digital movies on a holographic recording disc with a reflective layer using Optware's revolutionary Collinear Holography. This is a major milestone for commercializing holographic data storage system.

The recorded movies were played back in a series of meetings from July eight through 12 with Optware's six existing investors as well as eight enterprises both domestic and overseas including leading manufacturers of electronic and electric products for consumer, business and industrial use. Company names are not disclosed.

Advances being made in holographic
storage technology

Although Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD technologies have yet to reach the mainstream, progress is being made toward a more advanced holographic technology that may one day replace them. Japan's Optware Corp. earlier this week announced plans toward commercialization of its Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) technology. According to Computerworld, Optware Corp. said that it has set up an alliance to promote its HVD and that later this year will set up an office in the U.S. to promote the technology with major systems integrators there. HVD technology involves the use of a laser to store information on discs like CDs and DVDs. Instead of recording data in dots on the disc, beams of light interfere with each other, forming patterns within the HVD disc. U.S.-based InPhase Technologies Inc. is also trying to bring holographic storage drives to market in 2006. Researchers at IBM's Almaden Research Center are also developing holographic storage devices. Optware claims that the technology enables the storage of up to 3.9TB of information on a single disc. The company is initially commercializing 200GB recordable and 100GB read-only discs, it said. Data archiving for the U.S. health care industry is an early potential market, he said. As hospitals archive increasingly large data files such as digital X-rays and CAT scans, and increasingly make use of video images, the demand for increased storage capacity will grow. This year and next, the company will be preparing to submit three HVD storage media to the International Standards Organization. The 200GB disc and a 30GB credit card-size storage format may be approved by the ISO by the end of December 2006, while the 100GB read-only disc may approved in June 2007, Aoki said.

Inphase Technologies unveils holographic
drive prototype
01/05/2005 02:07 PM
Holographic data storage developer Inphase Technologies has launched the world's first prototype of a holographic storage drive. The prototype is the foundation for Inphase's family of Tapestry holographic drives, with data capacities that range from 200 GB to 1.6 TB on a single disk.

The prototype drive records data into Inphase's patented two-chemistry Tapestry photopolymer WORM material. The recording material is 1.5 mm thick and is sandwiched between two 130 mm diameter transmissive plastic disk substrates. Hitachi Maxell developed a new cartridge that provides maximum protection for the light-sensitive recording material.
