Space tech prevents spread of disease

Space tech prevents spread of disease 07/15/2004 11:44 PM

Just when we thought all that work in space was not really paying off, comes a new technology that will benefit us regular folks here on solid ground. Here on earth, hospitals have been battling microorganisms causing infections and spreading disease for as long as anyone can remember. Well thanks to technology originally designed for astronauts, hospitals will gain filtering technology here on earth to help fight the spread of airborne disease.

Lock-in prevents landfill

Lock-in prevents landfill 10/31/2003 09:37 PM
The AP has run a good piece on cellphone recycling that is marred by an excitingly stupid lede about the likelihood that number-portability will cause many of us to throw away our phones once we get better deals under the new competitive rules, and that this will be an environmental disaster. Lock-in prevents landfill. Cheez.
The new rule that takes effect Nov. 24 allowing users to change wireless (news - web sites) companies without losing their phone numbers is expected to motivate as many as 30 million people to switch within the first year.

Those who do will need to buy new phones. That's because even carriers that use the same network technologies employ different encryption.

Why Our Choice Of Language Prevents Us
From Debating The Real Issues

Why Our Choice Of Language Prevents Us
From Debating The Real Issues
04/09/2004 05:29 PM
It's important to remember (though, very easy to forget) that language choices are not neutral. You can explain the same thing in many different ways and lead people to very different conclusions. One area where that's clear is in the current debate over "intellectual property," where terms like "piracy" and "theft" get thrown around like facts - when they're weight words. As Kevin Werbach points out, you can see this in the language the Justice Department is using to announce their "Intellectual Property Task Force." Obviously, there are very important issues to be debated concerning how we deal with intellectual property. Instead of tackling those issues, however, this task force is being built to deal with the "destructive consequences of intellectual property theft." That's nice, if we're sure there's a real problem. There's been plenty of evidence lately that perhaps we've gone too far in trying to protect intellectual property - and we shouldn't be worrying so much about enforcing intellectual property laws, as we should be discussing how those laws need to be reformed. Of course, throwing people in jail is an easier to understand goal than looking at the real issues surrounding intellectual property law.

Department of Homeland Security Prevents
Terrorist from Entering the U.S.
09/25/2004 11:32 AM
As we all know, since September 11, 2001 the U.S. has been much more vigilant in defending itself against terrorist attacks.  In addition to bombing the shit out of the Middle East, we have also established the Department of Homeland Security whose responsibility it is to defend us from terrorists. They have so far done a stellar job, as the U.S. has yet to be hit by another terrorist attack.  But the ever-vigilant Department of Homeland Security is not resting on its laurels. Recently, they prevented the terrorist supporter Yusef Islam from entering the United States.

“SpaceShipOne has rocketed into the history books to become the first private manned spacecraft to fly to the edge of space and back. The craft, built by aviation pioneer Burt Rutan, went over space’s 100km (62 mile) boundary, said mission control. It was carried to 50,000ft (15km) by its launcher White Knight at which point it was unleashed. It fired its rockets to continue its trip.” The BBC’s servers are being hit hard at the moment - if you can’t get the story, try again later.

Maryland Game Developer Vision
Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PM
Vision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency) volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and personalities while managing their activities and personal relationships like “The SIMS®”. Your Disease Risk

Your Disease Risk 07/17/2004 05:00 AM
Your Disease Risk
http://www.yourdiseaser isk.harvard.edu/

Welcome to Your Disease Risk, the source on prevention. If you were looking for Your Cancer Risk, don’t worry. You’re in the right place. We’ve simply expanded. Now, in addition to cancer, you can find out your risk of four other important diseases and, as always, get personalized tips for preventing them. Your Disease Risk is an educational website developed by the Harvard Center for Cancer Prevention. Based at the Harvard School of Public Health, the Center promotes prevention as the primary approach to controlling cancer and other chronic diseases.

The Your Disease Risk site began as the Harvard Cancer Risk Index, a pen and paper cancer risk assessment tool first put together in the mid 1990’s by the Risk Index Working Group at Harvard University. In 1999, the Risk Index was adapted to the Web as Your Cancer Risk. Then, to give even greater emphasis to the importance of healthy behaviors, Your Cancer Risk was expanded to include assessments for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and osteoporosis. The expanded site was renamed Your Disease Risk and offers the follows risks assessments online:

What's Your Cancer Risk?
What's Your Diabetes Risk?
What's Your Heart Disease Risk?
What's Your Osteoporosis Risk?
What's Your Stroke Risk?

This will be added to Healthcare Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide.

A disease in the Breedster ecosystem...

A disease in the Breedster ecosystem... 04/25/2004 07:14 AM

There's so much I could write about Breedster if I had the time. I could write about the interesting way it handles new members (you have to put work in to getting food and finding a partner before you can create a new user account and plug someone into it). I could talk about the possibilities of gaming / message-board overlaps and some of the slightly-abortive work that Cal and I did on the not-open-for-business The Mafia Game site. I could talk about the gaming aspects of maintaining a community and the congruence between gaming rule-sets and political rule-sets. I could write about lots of things. There's loads of stuff I could talk about that's interesting (to me) here. Instead I'm just going to report that a friend of mine has just contracted a disease in the game - they've released an infestation that can affect your bug's digestive tract and make it harder for you to build up enough strength to fornicate. Watch out everyone, there's infected poop about. This is a disease of the colon that could (and please forgive me for this) run and run!
