Schlotzsky's Latest Numbers

Schlotzsky's Latest Numbers 02/18/2004 10:36 AM
Schlotzsky's reports 40 percent of customers consider Wi-Fi and Web browsing as factor in visiting: As the chain has expanded to 38 company-owned and franchise stores mostly in the South that offer in-store free computer access and Wi-Fi, their latest market research shows a significant uptick in awareness. The company reported that 40 percent of customers surveyed considered Wi-Fi and computer access a factor in their decision to come to Schlotzsky's, while 6 percent said Wi-Fi access alone was why they were there. Schlotzsky's a franchise chain, so in order for the firm to expand this offering beyond company-owned stores, it needed to convince franchise holders of the financial efficacy of offering free access to computers and Wi-Fi in the stores. These latest numbers seem to prove it. I've met the CEO and the marketing director when I invited the CEO to speak at a panel I moderated at Wi-Fi Planet last year, and the most interesting aspect of the Wi-Fi is that they're not excited about the technology but its uses. There's a financial aspect to this, of course: the average purchase price of a Schlotzsky's customer is about $7. But the CEO wasn't a geek; he liked seeing entire families or sports teams or groups of parents and kids come in and spent time using the high-speed connection. It's important to recall that a small but significant minority of Internet users have broadband; for the rest, Schlotzsky's offering is a profound (and free) pleasure....

BSA's Latest Made Up Software Piracy
Numbers Parroted By The Press

BSA's Latest Made Up Software Piracy
Numbers Parroted By The Press
07/07/2004 04:38 AM
Well, Reuters kicks off the fun by doing what just about every news report on the latest BSA numbers on software piracy will do: accepting the billions and billions of dollars of "losses" quoted without once questioning the source. As has been explained numerous times, these numbers are complete rubbish, and it's about time the press stopped accepting them and started asking questions. First off, the dollars "lost" always includes any infringed piece of software, never once considering the fact that many users of copied software would never buy the software at the given price. In other words, no money was actually "lost" in those cases. Furthermore, these studies never take into account the fact that many times, copied software gets people hooked on the software so they do end up buying later versions when it can be afforded. Many people attribute the success of Microsoft products to how easily they were copied and distributed years ago. The article does note that the BSA changed their methodology this year, as they finally realized that people who replaced fee-based software with free (whether open source or freeware) offerings shouldn't be counted as "losses" due to "piracy." Of course, the article screws up the details and says that open source software is "shareware." Either way, these types of bad, one-sided studies, and the blind acceptance of the press makes certain assumptions that keep people thinking the wrong way about intellectual property industries. While the BSA and its member organizations believe they're protecting themselves, they're doing more harm by shrinking their potential markets unnecessarily.

The RIAA Succeeds Where the Cypherpunks
Failed

The RIAA Succeeds Where the Cypherpunks
Failed
01/07/2004 02:51 PM
For years, the US Government has been terrified of losing surveillance powers over digital communications generally, and one of their biggest fears has been broad public adoption of encryption. If the average user were to routinely encrypt their email, files, and instant messages, whole swaths of public communication currently available to law enforcement with a simple subpoena (at most) would become either unreadable, or readable only at huge expense. [...] The Government's failure to get the Clipper implemented came at a heady time for advocates of digital privacy -- the NSA was losing control of cryptographic products, Phil Zimmerman had launched his Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) email program, and the Cypherpunks, a merry band of crypto-loving civil libertarians, were on the cover of [http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/1.02/crypto.rebels.html] the second issue of Wired. The floodgates were opening, leading to... ...pretty much nothing. Even after the death of Clipper and the launch of PGP, the Government discovered that for the most part, users didn't _want_ to encrypt their communications. The single biggest barrier to the spread of encryption has turned out to be not control but apathy. Though business users encrypt sensitive data to hide it from one another, the use of encryption to hide private communications from the Government has been limited mainly to techno-libertarians and a small criminal class. - More at http://www.shirky.com/writings/riaa_encryption.html

10/30/2003 08:11 AM
Apple is seeing "far more success than any other company" in implementing 1:1 computing solutions in U.S. education, Paul Papageorge, the company's senior director of marketing, told MacCentral. A 1:1 computing solution involves an environment where wireless networks are implemented so that every student and teacher has access to laptops. In an ideal situation, students can take the portable home and have access 24/7. This expands learning beyond the walls of the classroom, Papageorge said.

Open source Mambo CMS succeeds admirably

Open source Mambo CMS succeeds admirably 03/24/2005 05:17 AM
Managing even a medium-sized Web site can be a real headache. If you are tired of manually managing content, updating news, and keeping track of old items, then you need a content management system -- software that makes it easy to handle the mundane administrative duties of a Web site. A good CMS lets you divide the task of posting content among many relatively unskilled people. The Mambo CMS, released under the GPL, is designed to handle the largest of Web sites, and, in my experience, does so admirably.

Should a company that sells software with licenses that restrict what can be done with the code use "open" in its name? Ned Lilly doesn't see why not. The founder and president of OpenMFG says his company's approach of combining open source development with licensed selling is the right way to handle the complex and changing world of business applications.
