Tech And Hollywood Coalition

Tech And Hollywood Coalition

Tech And Hollywood Coalition 07/15/2004 09:55 PM

Hollywood is working with several high profile tech companies to ensure that high definition content will not end up being pirated over someone’s home network. This new coalition is built on the ashes of years of mistrust and suspicion that seem to have been put aside. Personally, I think that this will more than likely do nothing more than create more policeware that will make it even more difficult to archive movies and other media that you legitimately own.

This has been tried before without much success, but that doesn't really matter. A group of (large) tech companies and movie studios have now teamed up to create a "coalition" to come up with copy protection schemes. Apparently, Cory Doctorow's speech about why DRM is bad for everyone hasn't had much of an impact -- even on folks at Microsoft where he gave the talk. They're included in this "coalition" that seems suspiciously short on smaller companies. It's easy to see why, of course. Those smaller companies don't want to get locked into some proprietary, expensive technology that doesn't work well and only serves to piss off their customers. It's only larger companies who seem to think that protecting obsolete business models is more important than innovating and embracing new business models.

From John Borland at CNET:
Several high-profile technology companies and movie studios are expected to announce Wednesday that they have formed a coalition to ensure that high-definition video and other content cannot be pirated in home networks.

Sources familiar with the group's formation said the initial members include IBM, Intel, Sony, Microsoft, Warner Bros., Disney and Panasonic. The announcement is scheduled to be made at the cross-industry Content Protection Technology Working Group (CPTWG) meeting in Los Angeles, although last-minute membership changes could occur before then.

The alliance marks the culmination of years of tentative and often suspicious contact between the high-tech industry and Hollywood. It will be aimed at developing specifications to protect copyrighted content such as movies inside home networks. If the group is successful, a consumer might be able to download a high-definition movie, store it on a PC, watch it on a television and transfer it to a mobile device to watch while traveling.

Are Tech Companies Selling Out To

Are Tech Companies Selling Out To
Hollywood?
01/19/2004 01:44 AM
Dan Gillmor is noticing a disturbing trend of tech companies agreeing to the entertainment industry's demands to include various copy protection mechanisms in what they sell. He talks about boycotting HP until they change their mind (though, he doesn't seem to mind Apple, who also promotes copy protection technology). I'm not as worried about all of this as he is - as I still believe the market will work this all out. The more these companies agree to lock down their machines, the more incentive there is for other companies to come along and offer products that let consumers do what they want. For example, he mentions TiVo's silly lock-down mechanism on their TiVo-To-Go offering. While lots of people have been trashing their plans to lock the content down via a dongle of some sort, the story I heard from CES was that they've announced this as a way to make their investors in the entertainment industry stay calm - but knowing full well that by the time they launch it, they will probably have to ditch the protection plan. The idea was to announce the product with the lock-down system, wait until there was news of other, competing products that don't use such a scheme, and then release their own product without the lock-down, and tell people they needed to respond to what the market was telling them.

Tech Industry Giants' Marry Hollywood:

I've been hoping that the tech industry will bring its better traditions into the living room -- expanding customers' flexibility and creativity, not curbing them. At the giant Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early January, the evidence was mixed. While new technology is adding some useful features to consumer electronics, tech companies -- by embracing Hollywood-dictated restrictions on how digital content is used -- have allied themselves with a greedy cartel at the expense of their own customers.
