McDonald's Tries Out DVD Rentals 05/24/2004 09:21 AM
McDonald's grasps for relevance with a new pilot program in its Denver stores that will allow customers to rent DVDs for just $1 a day via kiosks placed in each of its 105 area stores. While they plan to only...

McDonald's Trying DVD Rentals... Again?

McDonald's Trying DVD Rentals... Again? 05/24/2004 05:37 PM
A year and a half ago we noted that McDonald's had decided to run a trial program in the Washington DC area, where they offered DVD rentals out of a large vending machine at their stores. There wasn't much news about the program, and it seemed safe to assume it wasn't going anywhere. However, today, McDonald's is announcing what sounds like an identical DVD rental program in Denver - without mentioning at all that they've already tried this. It's a bit odd that they would roll out a second "test" program so much later, and not even admit they had done an earlier test of an identical system.

(AP)

AP - For years, Pat de Garmo's Christmas tree was her aging yucca plant. She doesn't like the idea of killing trees, and the size of her yard prevents her from getting a potted one. So year after year she strung lights and ornaments on the indoor plant, hanging toy drums and colored orbs from its stiff branches.

Microsoft Unveils Software for Digital
Music and Movie Rentals
06/08/2004 12:04 PM
In a major step in its efforts to deliver subscription-based music and video content for portable and networked devices, the company has unveiled the next version of its Windows Media digital rights management (DRM) software. Numerous online music and movie services, entertainment companies, and consumer electronics firms have lined up to support the software, code-named Janus. The new DRM software has a "time bomb" feature, which will allow users to rent music and movies only for short periods. The idea is that "you will be paying a low monthly fee to fill your portable music player with thousands of songs, or renting a dozen movies to take with you on a Portable Media Center," says Amir Majidimehr, Microsoft corporate vice president.

I haven’t had a chance to really look into this, but I stumbled across an original concept at http://www.peerflix.com. It’s difficult to tell how much it will be successful, given the inevitable reluctance that people are going to have to share their precious DVDs with others. Still, you have ...

The Wal-Mart you don't know

The Wal-Mart you don't know 04/09/2004 04:11 PM
Morten Halfdan posted about Walmart having pushed the cost savings too far. Fast Company had a very interesting article about that a few months ago: The Wal-Mart You Don't Know. The giant retailer's low prices often come with a high cost. Wal-Mart's relentless pressure can crush the companies it does business with and force them to send jobs overseas. Are we shopping our way straight to the unemployment line?...

New Wal-Mart Display

New Wal-Mart Display 09/12/2004 02:09 PM
From Rebelscum reader JediJones: Hi, the Wal-Mart in Hazleton, PA got the OTC Falcon and VOTC display today but they put all the stuff out to the shelves instead of using the display. They put out 20 Falcons, 18 VOTC Luke, 12 VOTC Han, 12 VOTC Obi-Wan, and 6 VOTC Leia. I had heard different reports on the figure ratio so I wanted to confirm it as this. This apparently includes 6 VOTC cases of a 3-2-2-1 Luke-Han-Obi-Leia ratio. I've seen this myself at a Wal-Mart near me as well. And a buddy of mine was lucky enough to score one of the the side panels from the old display! Also, the entry/exit security machines have a new cardboard cover showing Star Wars on one side, and Mean Girls on the other. The promotional onslaught has begun!

$600 Wal-Mart Notebook PC 08/17/2004 11:27 AM

walmartnotebook.jpg imageAs a back-to-school special, this $600 ECS-branded notebook from Wal-Mart isn't half bad - 14-inch screen, Athlon XP-M 1600+, Wi-Fi (b), and DVD-ROM. Add a little extra memory to boost up the 128MB stock setup and you've got yourself a pretty decent little machine for browsing porn and downloading term papers. Plus it comes with a legal copy of XP Home, so you'll only have to go to jail for five years when you blow that away and install XP Pro (don't quote me on the legal specifics).
