Photoshop plug-in... not yet for Mac
02/06/2005 12:59 AMMok3 has introduced an amazing new Photoshop Plug-in, the
Perspective Clone Brush. This plug-in allows users to
give the software clues to the perspective plane of an image and clone
is such a way that it compensates for that distortion and more closely
matches that area you're covering. It also features the ability to
clone with simultaneous correction for differences in lighting and
scale in the image.
The software runs for US$169.99. There's a special introductory offer
that drops the price to US$129.99 and expires 3/31/05...hopefully the
Mac version will be out in time for us all to take advantage of that
offer because, as it stands, the Mok3 Perspective Clone Brush plug-in
is Windows only. Mok3 states on their site that "A version for Mac OS
X will be available soon. Please check back for updates on
availability." Wait and see.

07/08/2004 10:40 AM
TreoCentral gives a short,
but very positive preview of the latest version of Card Export II, a
bit of software that emulates the USB Mass Storage standard that, this
time around, lets your Treo 600 plug-and-play with your PC just like a
USB flash memory drive. What that means to you is that simply plugging
your Treo into any random machine will enable you to copy data back
and forth to the SD card without installing any drivers, greatly
easing the hassle of just trying to copy a few bits of data off a work
or friend's machine. Card Export II is $15 to purchase, but they do
have a free trial.
And for what it's worth, Card Export supports many different Palm
devices, not just Treos.

They are clear plastic covers that clip onto your CD/DVDs

at all times and don't affect playback while protecting your discs.
They add hardly any bulk, which means they will work with both
slot-loading or tray-loading drives. I tried them on my DVD player and
in my car and everything worked without a hitch. The only problem I
ran across was when I tried using covered discs in my iBook. Things
felt a little too snug with the covers, so I didn't push them all the
way in and risk them getting stuck.

Robotic skin
Robotic skin
07/03/2004 04:42 PMInteresting article about a new design for "electronic skin" as
sensitive to touch as our own:
"Recognition of tactile information will be very important for future
generations of robots," says Takao Someya at the University of Tokyo
who developed the skin. A sense of touch would help them to identify
objects, carry out delicate tasks and avoid collisions. But while a
lot of effort has gone into vision and voice recognition for robots,
touch sensitivity is still fairly rudimentary.
Our own skin contains a battery of touch receptors that produce nerve
signals when pressed. For gentle pressures, the main sensors are tiny
bulbs of layered tissue called Meissner's corpuscles. Their behaviour
is mimicked in plastics such as polyvinylidene fluoride, which
generate an electric field when squeezed and are used to make
pressure-sensitive pads for computer keyboards and other
touch-triggered devices.
