01/05/2004 11:34 PMRegistering an Application to a URL Protocol:
Here's a handy note on how to register a new URL protocol to an
application in Windows.
Adam did it with Zempt — a URL starting with
"zempt://" will start that app and pass it a bunch of information. I
always wondered how he did it, and I finally got curious enough to go
looking.
This is also handy to debug why a certain application isn't the
default app for mail or Web or whatever. I couldn't get Outlook to
give up the "mailto" protocol for anything. However, even the mighty
Outlook can't stand in the face of an blithering idiot and his ability
to change raw registry entries.

12/05/2003 11:19 AMTalk about real-time computing. A New Jersey man who was pulled over
by police for not having his registration up-to-date did some quick
thinking to keep his car from getting towed. He told the officer that
he just hadn't gotten around to renewing the registration form, and
was told that that's no excuse - especially since it's so easy to
register online. The officer then returned to his patrol car to write
a ticket and call for a tow truck - since it's illegal to have an
unregistered car on the road. The driver found the registration form,
which was in his car, called a friend on his mobile phone and had the
friend
register for him
online while the cop was writing the ticket. When the ticket was
written, the guy told the surprised officer that the car was now
registered, which was quickly confirmed. The ticket was still issued,
but the tow truck was canceled. Of course, if the guy had a smart
phone he probably could have done the whole thing himself - but it
still is impressive. Sometimes, always being connected can be useful.

Tired
Tired
05/06/2004 01:45 AM
I am getting tired of making execuses for our troops in Iraq.
I know it's just
a few among hundreds of thousands there who were responsible for
the ugly deeds.
I also know that it was the zealots in the military intelligence
willing to do anything
to get information and irresponsible army commanders more
interested in avoiding political
conflicts than doing the right thing.
But the road to understanding how those soldiers can do what they
did, even if coerced,
leaves rest of the hundreds of thousands American soldiers in Iraq
naked. Could
other groups of them have behaved better under the same
circumstances? Sadly,
my answer is no. Only consolation is that armies of other
countries would not
have done any better if they were traumatized through the same
tragic events as US
have. Some consolation.
I am not sure which is worse. Death of thousands of American
citizens and Destruction
of a famous American landmark or stunning blows to our pride
like this.
The former enraged me, the later left me hollow. I know that
most of the pride
was more wishful thinking reinforced by the hero-worshiping media,
but it's shocking
still to be stripped of it.

07/14/2004 06:35 AMPaul Boutin's latest piece for Slate is an amusing story about a
friend of his who registered the domain name
Tired.com back when both were working
at Wired (remember all that Wired/Tired hype?). Like so many people
who ended up owning a website, he had no idea what to do with it and
put up a simple message: "Are you tired? Tell us why" and linked to an
email address. It turns out, people were tired, and they had no
problem telling why. For the past seven years, the guy who runs the
site has
received over
32,000 emails, coming in at a fairly constant rate during all that
time. The site isn't advertised or talked about much (until now, I
guess), but tired people keep showing up and answering the question.
Boutin posts a couple of examples, and then notes that no one tries to
disguise their identity. He believes that they simply don't think
about the consequences at all, and are just answering the question.

Tired of being locked into formats?
Well then don't!
01/18/2004 01:39 PMDanny Ayers has
a solution for the OPML "give me permission" clause in the latest Dave
Winer effort. What I love about Danny (and folks like Ben
Hammersley - too) is that they always seem to come up with solutions
that stay backwards compatible (with the 'simple way') while then also
providing an elegant rdf way of doing things.
Thanks Danny!
And BTW - for the record - I AM a fan of OPML - but that doens't
mean that open standards get to be closed - just 'cause the author
changes his mind. Once open, teh cat's out of the bag!
Sharing, the
web way
I'm not a fan of OPML, I think it's a truly awful (and unnecessary) format - other people have found <
FONT color=#333366>it problematic
too - but I did think
Dave Winer's Share Your OPML! site looked
interesting, especially when there was a little SDK available. But then yesterday I
read Eric's post pointing to the floater Dave
had left in the pool :
If you wish to use the data for a
different kind of application, or convert the data into a format other
than OPML, for redistribution, it's likely we'll say yes, but you must
ask first.
Anyone that's had dealings with Dave in the
past will know what this means. Leigh asked (in comments) but had his
request deleted. Basically Dave wants control, and he believes the
formats will give him that control (remember the RSS patent
application?).
I'm all for republishing, but not with strings attached. I don't
want material under my copyright abused in this way. So I politely
asked Dave to remove references to sites I maintain from his data.
Anyhow, Dave's response was:
Do you want to make a legal case
out of this?
Personally I thought that was pretty sad,
but that might in part be cultural bias - being English I tend to
think of etiquette before litigation. Whatever, unfortunately for
Dave, and fortunately for the rest of us, formats aren't such a lever
any more because the web will either ignore or work around attempts at
lock-in.
I think the most sensible thing is to simply ignore Dave's site,
but for purposes of demonstration, here's a workaround. The key
obstacle is that Dave insists that you can't republish his data unless
it's in OPML format. If it is OPML, you don't even have to ask. Ok, here is another version of the index file that points to
all the others at "Share Your OPML!". This is still OPML format.
Please do with it what you like. Incidentally, this new file is also
valid RDF/XML.
Given that OPML is as thinly specified as it gets, and RDF/XML is
designed to make it easy to make XML formats RDF compatible, it wasn't
particularly difficult. Here's what RDF-compatible OPML looks
like:
<opml
opml:version="2.0"
xmlns="http://opml.scripting.com"
xmlns:opml="http://opml.scripting.com"
xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#">
<
;head/>
<body rdf:parseType="Resource">
<outline
opml:text="John Blog" opml:ctUpdates="8" opml:type="link"
opml:url="http://example.org" opml:whenLastUpdate="Wed, 14 Jan 2004
03:28:00 GMT" />
</body>
</opml>
I first had to add some attributes to the <opml> element to
give the XML namespace support. That top element becomes a resource in
the (stripey) RDF interpretation, with head and
body as properties, their contents being other resources.
To keep things simple I just ignored the contents of the <head>
element, so that gets interpreted as a triple with an empty object
(I must check on the semantics of that). The element itself is
mandatory in OPML, so that has to stay.
The <body> in effect
contains a set of resources of type outline, which is
easy to express by adding the rdf:parseType="Resource"
attribute on the parent. The attributes of the <outline>
elements all slip neatly into being RDF properties with literal
values.
Couple of points that probably need explanation - since the spec
update there's been no need to include a root <rdf:RDF> element.
If the consumer knows it's RDF, that's good enough (the W3C's validator has check box: "RDF is
NOT enclosed in <RDF>...</RDF> tags"). Also the use of
unqualified attributes has been deprecated, so it should be
opml:text="..." rather than just text="...".
This makes the code look a bit uglier, but if you're using a lot of
namespaces it does make mistakes much less likely.
I made the changes using search and replace, but this could easily
be automated using XSLT. But if you are planning on using Userland
format data from anywhere else, it's probably a better bet to use
something a little less generic than the approach above (stylesheets
for OPML to OCS and Userland RSS to RSS 1.0 are linked in the comments
here).[Raw]

05/26/2004 12:13 PMStory by my
Wired News colleague
Noah Schachtman about the Army's seven-year, $250 million uniform
high-tech-ification and redesign project -- dubbed Future Force
Warrior, or FFW.
One of the most obvious changes is that the new uniforms are unisex.
The zipper has been extended, and the uniform's butt flap has been
expanded, so GI Janes aren't literally caught with their pants down if
they have to pee.
FFW's body armor is probably the biggest improvement, however. It sits
on a series of foam pads around the rib cage, so there's a 2.5-inch
gap between the harness and the body. It keeps the GI cool. And it's
almost imperceptibly light -- unlike today's bulletproof vests, many
of which are about as comfortable as that lead apron the dentist makes
you wear during X-rays. But the scarab-like shell can take five to
seven direct hits from a machine gun, and it doubles as a holster for
ammunition and grenades.
