including the time-honored sport of Madagascar Cockroach Racing.
Every participant receives special race money and can purchase with
them one of six cockroach. Other participants bet for the couple of
player and cockroach they liked the most and watch the competition on
the big table (4.5x1.5 m).
The game will be a surprise to all guests. As much as they would
load the poor insect from the beginning, they will love them be the
end of the race. Players stimulate theirs cockroaches to run by
knocking the glassed surface of the course with the special small
sticks and joy of every step of cockroach. The finish of the race is
quite unpredictable and every step of a cockroach brings lots of
emotions to all the guests.

More and more people are saying that "Google is broken," as the search
results are increasingly less relevant. Much of the problem is that
some people see to have figured out how to successfully game the
system. For quite a while Google could stay ahead of those folks, but
in some areas it looks like they've fallen behind. On the whole, I
still find Google quite useful, but it's not as automatic as it once
was. For the folks who trick Google (they prefer to call themselves
"search engine optimizers") there's a once-a-month or so day they
dread when Google updates its algorithm and the results go through a
"Google Dance" as the listing move around. If Google does a good job
(which the SEO folks pray against), then improperly displayed SEO
client websites slide down the Google list. If not, they stay up at
the top. So, how does Google deal with these folks? They throw them
a party, amusingly called (you guessed it) the "Google Dance."
Google says that they're targeting the ethical search engine
optimizers, who they want to target with good suggestions that helps
both sides, but since it's tough to tell the good from the bad, anyone
is welcome. Some slightly more cynical folks think that Google is
just trying to butter them up and figure out what their secrets are to
improve their algorithm. Both might be right.

Most of the time, the life of a wayward freelance geek journalist is
fraught with stress, challenges, unpaid invoices. Well, last night
wasn't one of those times. I went to the Playboy Mansion to interview
Hugh Hefner, and cover the launch of a new Playboy-themed electronic
game for Wired News and National Public Radio. In the game, you get to
be Hef, doing hefsterly things like -- oh, nailing 18 year old
hotties, and managing a booming porn publication empire.
I sat down with Mr. Hefner and his gorgeous companions, and asked him
if he felt the game designers had created an accurate virtual
depiction of the world in which he lives. "It's pretty good, other
than the fact that they gave me this giant Jay Leno chin," he said.
There was much butt cleavage in effect. Beautiful women with tromp
l'oeil lingerie painted on their perfectly engineered breasts served
little snacks off flawlessly polished silver platters (see image at
left). Oh, and in case you're wondering -- there is no WiFi inside the
grotto, although there is one very heavily used mattress. NPR and

Spent the afternoon and evening doing
hanami at Ueno park (with
approximately 200,000 very drunken Japanese people) and watching the
moon. Then we ended up singing
karaoke at a 8-story Karaoke
building in Shibuya with beautiful Russo-Finnish ladies. Yes, even I
sang. There was little reason not to.
Japanese way of doing karaoke is actually not that bad: you go to a
small room (alone or with a bunch of good friends), fire up a TV,
choose a song from 50,000 alternatives, sing to your heart's content,
drink beer, repeat. It's a way of self-expression and relaxation, not
a method for nursing your inner diva.
It's kinda like blogging is for most people. You just write to
yourself or a bunch of close friends, and don't worry it about any
more than that. Only the most curious, the most vocal - and
unfortunately, the most read - persons worry about how and why they
write, what is "right" blogging, why people don't like their
writing, why people do like their writing, and other issues of
insignificance.
It's just a song.
It's just text.
Don't worry about it too much.

between Helsinki and Stockholm as part of ISEA2004 Inter-Society for the
Electronic Arts. Videos for CONTRABAND, STOWAWAY LOUNGE should
re-invent the pop-cultural medium of karaoke. From Tokyo to Tallinn,
the ubiquitous, democratic form of entertainment activates national
identity, nostalgia, sentimentality, and glimmers of rock-stardom.
Individual performances transform this generic format into ironic,
campy, critical and individualized meanings. Erupting within the
entertainment-industrial complex, these do-it-yourself appropriations

separate events. After the second one, I went back to the first event,
a gathering of about 125 people who run libraries and museums, because
I'm trying to write some stuff about metadata and taxonomies. I
learned, for example, that one well-known art museum has had to create
over 300 new Dewey Decimal categories for illustrated manuscripts ...
and one for astrology. Afterwards, I went to a cocktail party put on
by the hosts of the second event. It was quite the power party. I got

The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the
Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in
game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all
seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it
will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These
people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with
players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live
"actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially
commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty
slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other
than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an
Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game
so far.
