Watch & Compass Cufflinks

Watch & Compass Cufflinks 07/15/2004 11:43 AM

cclsc.jpg
imageCufflinks are classy. Trust me, I know; I used to have arms. Cramming tiny clocks, compasses, and thermometers inside things can be classy, too, provided everyone involved is wearing white (and are consenting adults). For $50 (or less, depending on your choice of metal), these cufflinks can find a home on your wrist where you can be sure to never even look at them, unless showing them off to your friends. And that's fine.

Wrist-mounted instrumentation: nerdy
cufflinks
07/15/2004 12:17 PM
I've never had much use for cufflinks (especially since my tux and tux-shirt vanished along with three boxes of prized possessions that I mailed from San Francisco to London), but these ones appeal to the autistically instrument-obssessed nerd in me: an entire line of cufflinks with embedded clocks, thermomenters and compasses. It's enough to make me a) want to buy a pair and b) buy a new tux to wear 'em with. Link (Thanks, Yoz!)

Commander V Binoculars with Compass

Commander V Binoculars with Compass 07/30/2004 11:41 AM

commanderv8753-1.jpg imageThe new Steiner Commander V Binoculars are not night-vision equipment, despite claims that nighttime images are "so brilliant, it's almost like turning on a spotlight." Instead, the "Nighthunter" optics deliver a high rate of peak light transmission (96%; a record, they say) that means these military-spec binocs transmit as much available light as possible into your own orbs, making the most of ambient star- and moonlight. Built-in autofocus with memory means you can recall settings from previous viewings instantly, and an integrated compass shows you what direction you're looking. Although there's nothing saying you have to use them to skipper a boat, a water-resistance tested up to five meters means they're more than suitable for the purpose.

Of course, I'd hope most $900 pairs of binoculars would be.

Wireless Watch 2004: UbiButton Watch
Super Clapper
07/22/2004 08:11 AM

wjdcm19l.jpg imageWIRELESS WATCH 2004 is going on in Japan until Friday, and there are plenty of new product demonstrations as well as those currently in development on display. This year's hot sheet includes NTT DoCoMo's "UbiButton," a device similar in form factor to a wristwatch. By detecting the shock waves in the arm created by a simple snapping of the fingers, a switch is flipped that can, for example, turn a light on and off. In other words, DoCoMo has glorified The Clapper to now be called The Snapper. Actually, I know a couple people that can't snap their fingers...what the hell are they supposed to do? [Uhm, clap? - ed] Other highlights from the convention included a working model of a Bluetooth pen, and DDI Pocket's "Jacketphone," a SD card sized PHS module. TechJapan has full Day 1 coverage, with pretty pictures.

Someone to watch over me

Someone to watch over me 09/24/2004 09:55 AM
Once the stuff of academic and corporate experimentation, ubiquitous computation (or "ubicomp") is gearing up for its commercial debut in the very near future. Along the lines of ostensibly "nanotechnologic al" pants, the reality of ubicomp as made manifest in consumer products may fall somewhat short of the prognostications: buying a person al communicator designed to work seamlessly within a ubicomp context is not the same thing as living in and with a truly pervasive network.

But already there are signs that the ubiquitous visions beloved by the corporate players and enshrined in their hype are coming into being. So which do you think it'll be? Guardian angel or inescapable, panoptical prison? Neither? Maybe both? I have a sinking feeling we're going to find out, one way or another.

Librarian in Black

"This site was born out of my displeasure at having to wade through dozens of websites, blogs, & RSS feeds related to librarianship, technology, webmastery, and current issues to find those few posts that applied to me as a Tech Librarian. I hope this site can serve as a one-stop-shop for all us Techie Librarians...web design, technology news, library world news, reference stuff, funky gadgets, and other useful (or simply amusing) sites and posts. It also has an RSS feed (a must for lazy people like me)."

And as befitting such a site, there is, of course, an RSS feed. Subscribed!
